CAMO/From B1up front, perfect for showing off her fa-vorite footwear. “We have girls who come in here and they want to get married in their boots,” said Doyle, picking up a pink sequined boot. “But we try to glam it up a little.”

“We’re just starting to get an interest in the snow camo,” she said. “Our print is called ‘Mossy Oak Winter Breakup’.”

Gowns with corset-style lacings in the back were popular in the last year, said Doyle, and many of her brides had their white gowns accented with camouflage corset ties. “We even do camo veils,” said Doyle.

But for girls who just want a little bit of country added to their dress, Doyle also carries camouflage belts – complete with hunter-orange flower details – to pair with

a basic ivory wedding dress. “It’s a way of putting theirown personal stamp on a dress,” she said.

They even have camouflage tuxes so the groom can match his beautiful country bride. “We’ve got all the parts,” she said. “The groom can do a full camo suit, or a camo jacket with black pants, or black tux with a bright orange vest.”

CIGARS/From B1exhibit, opening Feb. 1.A bit of an oddity today,

cigars were a large part of local life for nearly a century, with the first cigar-makers coming to Oneonta in 1866, a year after the D&H railroad. “They were directly connected,” said Bob Brzozowski, Greater Oneonta Historical Society executive director. “The tobacco could be shipped up from the south, and the wrappers could be shipped down from the Connecticut

River Valley.”Doyle & Smith was the

biggest local cigar manu-facturer, setting up shop in the 1870s. “Charlie Smith worked for the D&H and saw a business opportunity,” said Brzozowski. “At one time, they were making 10 million cigars a year and employed between 150-170 people. They were the sec-ond largest employer in the area after the railroad, and they employed women too.”

Hayes & Bowish was the second largest company.

The industry was a sig-nificant enough employer to spawn a cigar makers union in the 1880s.

Doyle & Smith closed in the 1940s, and with a cigar shortage brought on by World War II, a Mr. Steve-nor, then president of the company, took advantage, employing one man and three women to roll 5,000 cigars a week in a shop on Main Street.

By the end of the 1940s, machines had replaced the need for skilled labor.

Smoking was still so-cially acceptable then, and Palace Cigar was a daily stop for many shoppers. “We always had a little something in there that was a little different,” said Rose & Laurel Bookshop owner Pete Molinari. “People would come in every day to pick up their paper and their cigarettes.”

The Molinaris owned Oneonta Cigar for a half-century – 1930-80 – first in the lobby of the Palace Theater on Main and Ford (now Community Bank’s modern wing), selling cigars and cigarettes, com-ics, pulp magazines, candy and popcorn. “Kids would come over and buy popcorn for the movies,” he said. “There were all sorts of she-nanigans, ticket swapping and such.”

At one time, Pete Moli-nari held a brand-new (and, today, rare) copy of “Super-man #1” in his hand, excit-edly poring over the origin story of the most famous superhero in the world. “I wish I’d held onto it!” he said. “We kids didn’t save them like they do today.”

Palace Cigar was also one

of only “one or two” places to develop film in the 1950s. “This was before digital cameras or one hour pho-tos,” he explained. “We’d send the film down to Binghamton. It was just us and one or two drugstores, maybe.”

The theater was torn down in 1966, when the bank expanded, and the cigar shop moved to where the bookstore is now, at 273 Main St. Molinari focused the business on pipe sales, citing the decline in cigar sales.

“We didn’t get into the

high grade cigar here in Oneonta,” he said. “They didn’t take off again until the ’90s, with Cigar Aficio-nado magazine and cigar bars.”

When Tom Oliver bought the business in 1980, he moved next door to 277 Main. It was sold to Peter and Lyla Bonnici in 2012 and closed this past March. “It was a different scene,” he said. “Nowadays, there’s a gas station on every corner where people can get their cigarettes and newspaper. It was an Oneonta institution. We were sad to see it close.”

A COMPLETE GUIDE TO

WHAT’S FUN AROUND

Jim Kevlin/The Freeman’s JournalJordan Manikas has the ball and Christian Alexander, right, makes sure he keeps it, as the Cooperstown Hawkeyes dominate against the Fort Plain Hilltoppers to claim the title, 64-40, Saturday, Dec. 28, in the Dick White Christmas Tournament at Bursey Gym. The team had topped Cobleskill-Richmondville the evening before. Alexander won all-tournament honors.

Point guard Park Sum-mers paced the CCS boys’ victory.

Alani Tsouvas, right, sparks the Hawkeye cheer-leader routine.

The tournament is named after legendary CCS coach, who over 27 years achieved a 410-155 record for his then-Redskin teams, winning 14 Cen-ter State Conference Championships. He passed away in 2007. His sons, John, from Utica, and David, from South Carolina, brought their families to this year’s tourney.
