But why have a procession at all? And why outside? A procession with the Body of Christ in a monstrance is an outward sign that represents a deeper reality – our faith in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharistic Bread, which is the ultimate source and sign of unity. And the feast of Corpus Christi is one time when our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament is exposed not just to faithful Catholics but to all the world. This is a time when Catholics can show their love for Christ in the Real Presence by honoring Him in a very public way. It is also a wonderful way in which we can show our love for our neighbors by bringing Our Lord and Savior closer to them. So many conversions to the true Church are a result of Eucharistic Adoration experienced from inside the Church. How many more there would be if we could reach those who only drive by the church in worldly pursuits. How are we doing with our current Catholic Services Appeal (CSA)? See page 5 for details. Financial Peace University (FPU) this summer! We are offering the 9-week course this summer on Wednesday evenings (6:30-8:00 PM) in the Parish Center starting June 20th. If you are struggling financially to make ends meet, are tired of living paycheck to paycheck, are sick and tired of being sick and tired over money matters – or someone you know is – consider taking the course. If you have questions about Financial Peace University feel free to ask me (Fr. Joe). Also there will be more information in future bulletins. You can register for the course at the parish office or online at www.DaveRamsey.com. The lifetime family membership costs $129. However, we have a special offer for the first 10 households who register and pay through the parish office – the cost is only $100. ***Child care is available for participants, but please let us know when registering if that is something you need. Have a blessed week,

From Fr. Joe This Sunday we celebrate the Most Holy Trinity. We do that every year on the Sunday following Pentecost and it may seem like one of those things “we just do.” But what is the Trinity? We might answer (and correctly) that it is the One God in three Divine Persons. Ok, but how do we understand the Trinity? Ah, there’s where it gets interesting. We don’t. Why not? Because it’s a mystery. (Sure, just say it’s a mystery—that seems like a convenient cop-out.) While we may not like resorting to such a seemingly simplistic response there is something so wonderfully true about it at the same time.

While we don’t like to admit that there is something we will never be able to understand and explain, consider this: would we really want a less awesome God that could be so easily understood and explained?

Yes, thank God, for the mystery of the Trinity!

As we have had for the last few years, the Mass this Monday – Memorial Day – will be at Holy Cross Cemetery at 12 noon. We will celebrate Mass on the cement altar near the large crucifix. (If you are not sure where that is, look for all the cars.) There are no pews, so bring a chair if you want to sit.

In the event of inclement weather (e.g. rain, or imminent rain, or high winds), the Mass will be celebrated at St. Anne Church.

This coming Friday evening, June 1st, Bishop Raica will be with us to celebrate the Sacraments of Confirmation and 1st Communion during a 6:00PM Mass at St. Anne Church of All Saints Parish. While here, Bishop will also bless our new crucifix. Everyone is welcome, but please be aware that most of the center section pews will be reserved and occupied by those who will be receiving Confirmation and their 1st Holy Communion, and by their families. Please note: in preparation for – and due to – the 6:00 PM Mass celebration of Confirmation and 1st Holy Communion, the Friday 12 noon Mass followed by Adoration with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will take place at St. Mary Church of All Saints Parish, and will conclude with Benediction at 4:00 PM. Therefore, this coming Friday, there will not be the usual 6:00 PM Evening Prayer, nor Stations of the Cross at 6:30 PM, nor confessions from 7-8 PM. (Be sure to check the weekly calendar section of the bulletin.) Next Sunday begins the 5:00 PM evening Mass rotation at St. Bernard Church of All Saints Parish for the summer months of June, July, and August. Also, next Sunday, June 3rd, is the Solemnity of Corpus Christi (the Most Holy Body and Blood of Jesus). Last year, we had a short procession around the church following each of the Corpus Christi weekend Masses. This year there will be only one procession which will take place following the Sunday 11:00 AM Mass and which will go from St. Anne Church to St. Bernard Church. Everyone is invited to participate in the procession and publicly show our devotion to the Body and Blood of Christ. I prayerfully encourage all of you, even if you are attending one of the other weekend Masses, to join in the procession as a wonderful witness to the world of our Catholic faith.

Parish Vision All Saints Parish is a spiritual and faith-filled family, em-braced by God’s love. Stewardship in Our Readings The focus of today’s feast is the total self-giving of Jesus.

The bishop’s stewardship pastoral reminds us that “the glory and the boast of Christian stewards lie in

mirroring, however poorly, the stewardship of Jesus Christ, who gave and still gives all He has and is, in order to be

faithful to God’s will and carry through to completion His redemptive stewardship of human beings and their world.”

Anointing of the sick: part 2

The Precepts of the Catholic Church are a description of the absolute minimum actions required of Catholics regarding the Church. The Church uses these precepts to remind us that Christian life requires a commitment to prayer and active participation in the liturgy and sacraments. If we fall below this bare-minimum level, we can’t rightly consider ourselves to be in full communion with the Catholic Church. Each of these precepts of the Catholic Church is a requirement. Together with the Ten Commandments, they represent the minimum level of moral living. Intentional violation of the precepts or the Commandments is a grave matter, meaning a mortal sin. If you knowingly have not, or do not, follow these precepts and the Ten Commandments and have not confessed this, then completed your penance, you are in Mortal sin. It makes no difference how long ago, your age, your job. If you feel that there were, or are, circumstances that should be considered that is not your decision to make. You should go to Confession and discuss it with the Priest.

The Precepts 1. You shall attend Mass on Sundays and on holy days of obligation and rest from unnecessary servile labor.

We must “sanctify the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord” (Sunday), as well as the principal feast days, known as Holy days of obligation. This requires attending Mass, “and by resting from those works and activities which could impede such a sanctification of these days.”

2. You shall confess your sins at least once a year. We must prepare for the Eucharist by means of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession). This sacrament “continues Baptism’s work of conversion and forgiveness.”

3. You shall receive the sacrament of the Eucharist worthily at least during the Easter season. This “guarantees as a minimum the reception of the Lord’s Body and Blood in connection with the Paschal feasts, the origin and center of the Christian liturgy.” Worthily means that you are free from all Mortal sin.

4. You shall observe the days of fasting and abstinence established by the Church. “The fourth precept ensures the times of ascesis and penance which prepare us for the liturgical feasts and help us acquire mastery over our instincts and freedom of heart.”

5. You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church. “The fifth precept means that the faithful are obliged to assist with the material needs of the Church, each according to his own ability.” This may be monetary, physically or spiritually. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Precepts of the Catholic Church (#2041-3).) Note that these precepts of the Catholic Church are required, unless you have a legitimate reason for not meeting them. Which as mentioned above should be discussed with a Priest.

Always remember: the precepts of the Catholic Church are minimum levels of participation in the life of the Church. Out of love for Christ and a desire to advance in the spiritual life, you will normally try to do far more than they require. Many Saints and spiritual writers recommend that Catholics: Attend Mass at least one more time a week. Go to confession at least once a month, and find a regular confessor so he can give you better guidance. It should be

noted that Pope St John Paul went to Confession every two weeks , as did Mother Teresa, as did Padre Pio. Many Saints went to Confession on a weekly basis. Regular Confession should focus not on being a sinner, but because you want to be a SAINT!

Find a good spiritual director to give you sound guidance for growing in the spiritual life. This is often part of Confession.

Receive the sacrament of the Eucharist at every Mass, if you meet the guidelines for reception (are free from mortal sin, etc.). The precept is to attend Mass, if you are unable to receive Communion this does not exclude you from attending. Niether is it a good thing to receive because you are there if you are not free from Mortal sin. This would add further Mortal sin to your Soul.

Make a habit of practicing penitential and charitable acts beyond those required by the precepts of the Catholic Church.

Contribute as much as possible to the material needs of the Church and the needy.

Mortal and venial sins All sin is an offense against God and a rejection of his perfect love and justice. Yet, Jesus makes a distinction between two types of sins. We call the most serious and grave sins, mortal sins. Mortal sins destroy the grace of God in the heart of the sinner. By their very grave nature, a mortal sin cuts our relationship off from God and turns man away from his creator. St. Paul’s letter to the Hebrews tell us that “if we sin willfully after having the knowledge of the truth, there is now left no sacrifice for sins” (Hebrews 10:26).

Anointing of the sick: Part 2

The second type of sin, venial sin, that of less grave matter, does not cut us off from Christ. However, venial sin does weaken grace in the soul and damages our relationship with God. A person who frequently indulges in venial sin is very likely to collapse into mortal sin if they persist in their behavor. In order for a sin to be mortal, it must meet three conditions: Mortal sin is a sin of grave matter (see the above required duties of the Church.) Mortal sin is committed with Full knowledge means that one is aware that God or the Church he founded considers the

act sinful (even if one doesn’t totally understand why it is sinful). Mortal sin is committed with Deliberate consent means a consent sufficiently intentional to be a personal choice (CCC

1857-1859). This means that mortal sins cannot be done “accidentally.” A person who commits a mortal sin is one who knows that their sin is wrong, but still deliberately commits the sin anyway. This means that mortal sins are “premeditated” by the sinner and thus are truly a rejection of God’s law and love.

A mortal sin “results in the loss of charity and the privation of sanctifying grace, that is, of the state of grace. If it is not redeemed by repentance and God's forgiveness, it causes exclusion from Christ's kingdom and the eternal death of hell, for our freedom has the power to make choices for ever, with no turning back” (CCC 1861).

This is why it is so important for mortal sins to be confessed to a priest as soon as possible. The Catechism of the church tells us "sins are rightly evaluated according to their gravity (CCC 1854)" and that there is a distinction between sins, that of mortal and venial sin. "Mortal sin destroys charity in the heart of man by a grave violation of God’s law; it turns man away from God, who is his ultimate end and his beatitude, by preferring an inferior good to him (CCC 1855)." Venial sin is a sin of less serious matter that weakens charity and impedes the exercise of virtue. The bible testifies to the differentiation between mortal and venial sin. St. John’s epistle tell us "there is such thing as deadly sin, about which I do not say that you should pray (1 Jn 5:16)".

The Tradition of the Church affirms that mortal sin destroys sanctifying grace of the soul and cuts the sinner off from the body of Christ. Scripture again affirms Tradition when Jesus compares the Body of Christ, the church, to a vine. The members of the Church are warned by Christ, "Anyone who does not remain in me will be thrown out like a branch and wither; people will gather them and throw them into a fire and they will be burned (John 15:6)." Thus a sin of mortal nature cuts us off from the Body of Christ, until the sinner is moved to repentance in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Just a concluding note. The above is not my opinion. It is the teaching of the Church. It is not new and neither is it old fashioned. If some of it is new to you, then now you know. If some of it you thought we no longer believed, well, now you know. If you have heard something contrary from a Priest, then he was mistaken, or wrong. Don't conlude that because many parishes have two, or three, penitential services a year that this is a good number of times to go. The time to go is when you are aware of having sinned, in particular mortal sin. Equally don't kind yourself on that because of your age, or if you rarely go out that you can't commit mortal sins. Most mortal sins happen in the home! The most important thing is that you regularily use the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This is one of the most sure ways to get to Heaven. Not because you are a sinner, but because you want to be a Saint!

May the merciful God see you all in the Sacrament of Confession, God bless, Fr Scott.

Recently, All Saints Parish established a Hospital Ministry at

Mid Michigan—Alpena serving the Catholics in the Alpena and surrounding areas. These volunteers are helping manage spiritual care for patients, their families and hospital staff including spiritual and practical counseling, visiting patients and family members, and providing prayer and Holy Communion when appropriate. LeJean Carter is the new Catholic Chaplain. Pastoral Care Ministers include Mary Seguin, Maureen McWilliams, Mike Roy, and Joann Kuschel. During hospital visits they focus on the needs of the patient and prepare the individual to receive the Sacraments of Healing if desired. Fr. Joe and Fr. Scott are then called to administer Anointing of the Sick, and if necessary Confession. LeJean is also available on call for the Emergency Room, ICU and Women’s health when emergency or end of life issues arise. We accomplish this corporal work of mercy under our chosen Patron Saint, St. Teresa of Calcutta, who saw the face of Christ in everyone she served and is the perfect model for this ministry. We ask for your prayers as we go out each week to care for our Catholic family when hospitalized here in our community. LeJean can be reached at 590-0523.

Fr. Michael Gaitly’s Program on the Trinity “The One Thing Is Three”

Last year many people from All Saints and neighboring par-ishes were consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus through Father Michael Gaitley's parish based programs, "Thirty-Three Days To Morning Glory" and "Consoling The Heart Of Jesus". They are the first two books in a four part series Called "Hearts Affire". The next two books in the series come under the title "Wisdom And Works Of Mercy". The books are called "The One Thing Is Three" and "You Did It To Me". Anyone interested in doing Father Michael Gaitley's program on the Trinity, "The One Thing Is Three" please contact Julie Kaszubowski @ 766-2781 or 590-7895.

I had the privilege of attending the Jr High Youth retreat on May 18/19 with 21 youth from Alpena and Rogers City. We entered the wardrobe into the land of Narnia. Watching “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” movie along with discussing how CS Lewis incorporated so much of our faith within the movie. We had some good conversations at times finding ourselves in Peter, Susan, Edmond, and Lucy. We talked about our Catholic Connection, our Gifts and Virtues, and how we are all companions on the journey. A great retreat with some wonderful youth. God bless them all!!

2019 Mass Intention Book Opens Friday,

June 1st The 2019 Mass Intention Book will become available for scheduling intentions beginning Friday, June 1st. You are also able to schedule intentions on Holy Days and holidays (e.g. Christmas, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, etc.). Our policies to make opportunities for having

an intention open to as many as possible and as fair as we can make it:

2 intentions per household per calendar year.

Of those two intentions, only one may be on a holy day or holiday.

Memorial/funeral donations for a Mass: regardless of the amount donated, we can schedule just one Mass for a donation.
