St. Josephs Altar The Feast day of St. Joseph, patron saint of Italy and the poor, is this Thursday, March 19th. For Italian-American families, St. Josephs Day is a long-standing tradition. The origins of the Italian-American version of St. Josephs Day most likely date back to Medieval Sicily when the saint was said to have answered the peoples prayers by ending one of the islands legendary droughts. Ever since, St. Josephs Day has been celebrated with a large Lenten feast often served to the entire village (or multi-family meals), and an elaborate altar dedicated to the saint. Decorations found on the altars include statues, crosses, flowers, oranges and lemons, candles, religious medals, rosaries, prayer cards, fava beans, and loaves of bread. The foods and fruits are given away when the altar is broken down. The fava bean plays a prominent role in the feast and can be seen on the altars and in the traditional pasta dish. At the meal. The hardy bean was not affected by the droughts and famines of Sicily, making it an invaluable food source to the peasants. Harking back to St. Frances Cabrini Parishs Sicilian roots, we will have a St. Joseph altar this year. Usually, people are invited to contribute food items to be donated when the altar is broken down. However, due to health concerns of hands-on contact, we will not participate in that portion of the celebration.

Stewardship—March 15, 2020 “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again.” John 4:13 Jesus reminds us that material things, even something as basic as water, can never satisfy us for long. When we build our lives around material possessions we always want more. True Joy and Peace only comes when we follow Jesus; when we become more “God-centered” and less “self-centered”.

Archbishop Lucas asks local Catholics to invoke St. Joseph

To you, O blessed Joseph, do we come in our tribulation. Through

that charity which bound you to the immaculate Virgin Mother of God and through the paternal love with

which you embraced the Child Jesus, we humbly beg you

graciously to regard the inheritance which Jesus Christ has purchased by his Blood, and with your power and strength to aid us in our necessities.

O most loving father, ward off from

us every contagion of error and corrupting influence; O our most

mighty protector, be propitious to us and from heaven assist us in our

struggle with the power of darkness; and, as once you rescued the Child

Jesus from deadly peril, so now protect God’s children from the snares of the enemy and from all

adversity; shield, too, each one of us by your constant protection.

Amen.
