DODGE COUNTY 4-H
PLANNING MEETING
AGENDA ITEM
Rate of Gain Contest
Thursday, February 25 at 7 p.m.
Nebraska Extension Office in Fremont
In 2016, State Fair and AKSARBEN are eliminating
their Market Beef Rate of Gain Contest. Therefore it is
important that Dodge County discuss the continuation of
the county rate of gain contest. The 2017 Dodge County
Fair Market Beef Rate of Gain Contest will be discussed
at the Dodge County 4-H Planning Meeting. If you would
like to provide input, please attend the meeting or con-
tact the Extension Office (402-727-2775).
MARKET BEEF WEIGH DAY
Event: Sunday, January 24, 2016
from 1-4 pm
At the Masonic Home for Children,
Leonard A. Johnson Building
Enter west entrance from Hwy 77
8
There are many changes that have been made on a state level and as a result are reflective of the changes to the 2016
Dodge County 4-H/FFA Livestock Identification Rules and Regulations. Therefore, please closely review the
changes and updates.
MARKET BEEF IDENTIFICATION ONLY
ALL 4-H/FFA market beef are required to be identified with a 4-H/FFA EID tag (cost pending – approximately
$3.50/tag). [NOTE: Animals may use existing official EID “840” tags that are currently in the animal’s ear.]
The EID tag is considered as both 4-H and FFA. Therefore;
if the owner is a 4-H member, the animal is considered 4-H,
if the owner is a FFA student, the animal is considered FFA, and
if the owner is both a 4-H member and a FFA student, the animal is considered both.
HOWEVER, an animal may only be exhibited at ONE county fair. Once the animal exhibits at a county fair it will
be ineligible to exhibit at another. (Fremont 4-H Fair is an invitational show and is not considered a county fair.)
Market Beef identification limit is 10 animals per exhibitor.
4-H/FFA animals to be eligible for Nebraska State Fair/AKSARBEN:
Are required to be identified with a 4-H/FFA EID tag.
Are required to complete and submit a DNA sample envelope (cost pending – approximately $6.00/
envelope).
4-H members/FFA students will NOT be required to complete an additional county identification form.
As exhibitors enter their 4-H/FFA animals for the Nebraska State Fair (online system), they will be re-
quired to designate 4-H OR FFA entry. If exhibitors enter animals as FFA, those animals will be illegible to
entry/exhibit at AKSARBEN. Only 4-H designated animals may enter the AKSARBEN 4-H Stock Show.
4-H/FFA animals that are COUNTY ONLY:
Are required to be identified with a 4-H/FFA EID tag.
Are required to complete and submit a county identification form (NEBRASKA 4-H and FFA MARKET
BEEF OWNERSHIP AFFIDAVIT).
ALL MARKET BEEF PAPERWORK – DNA envelopes and county identification forms are due by the APRIL
15 DEADLINE to the Nebraska Extension Office in Dodge County, Fremont.
4-H/FFA LIVESTOCK IDENTIFICATION DEADLINE (Market Beef Only): All tagging, tattooing, ear
notching and DNA sampling MUST be completed by the DEADLINE DATE (April 15). In other words,
4-H/ FFA livestock projects are NOT to be tagged, tattooed, ear notched and/or DNA sampled AFTER the dead-
line date. All identification procedures are to be completed by the set deadline. Any 4-H livestock identified
AFTER the DEADLINE DATE will be INELIGIBLE to exhibit in the 2016 livestock shows (Fremont 4-H Fair,
Dodge County Fair, Nebraska State Fair 4-H Shows, and Ak-Sar-Ben 4-H Youth Livestock Exposition).
Market heifers identified as market beef by the April 15 deadline must remain as market and will NOT be eligible
to identify as breeding heifers at a later date.
Dodge County Market Beef Weigh Day will be held Sunday, January 24 at Masonic Home. Market Beef are
required to attend this weigh day to be eligible for the 2016 Dodge County Fair Market Beef Rate of Gain Contest.
State Fair and AKSARBEN have eliminated the rate of gain contest, therefore 4-H/FFA families may tag, identify
and/or DNA sample on their own if they so choose. However, animals not identified during the Dodge County Mar-
ket Beef Weigh Day on Sunday, January 24 at Masonic Home will NOT be eligible for the Dodge County Fair
Market Beef Rate of Gate Contest.
If 4-H/FFA families are unable to attend the Dodge County Market Beef Weigh Day (January 24/Masonic Home)
OR plan to identify on their own, they will be responsible for obtaining the 4-H/FFA EID tags and paperwork
(DNA envelopes and/or county identification forms) from the Nebraska Extension Office in Fremont. ALL
PAPERWORK FOR MARKET BEEF must be completed and submitted by APRIL 15 DEADLINE to the
Nebraska Extension Office in Dodge County, Fremont.

4-H PROJECTS
4-H PROJECT SELECTION
Selecting the right 4-H projects can be
challenging. Careful planning and de-
cision-making up front will increase member sat-
isfaction, improve completion and reduce frustra-
tions. A resource to help you make a decision is
the Project Resource Central available on the
web at: http://4h.unl.edu/4hcurriculum/
projectresources
The Pick-A-Project guide lists all Nebraska 4-H
projects and resources with a brief description,
including recommended levels.
Tips for Parents & Club Leaders:
1. Encourage members to pick just a few
projects. It is better to complete one project
than to give up on many. Accepting respon-
sibility is an important 4-H life skill. Com-
pleting a project is a good way for a 4-H’er
to demonstrate responsibility.
2. Encourage members to work on pro-
jects in related areas. For example,
members might enroll in foods AND horti-
culture — or home environment AND wood-
working— or horse AND veterinary science.
3. Encourage members to work at one lev-
el per project: beginning, intermediate
OR advanced. For example, avoid being in
Woodworking I and Woodworking III the
same year.
4. Encourage members to select a project
level based on the Pick-A-Project rec-
ommendations AND their individual
abilities. For example, older members may
start at a higher level IF the beginning pro-
jects are too basic for them.
5. Encourage members to progress to the
next project level once the current level
challenges have been either accomplished or
repeated for several years.
Tips for Members:
When selecting a project, ask yourself:
What do I like to do for fun?
What do I want to learn?
What do I already know about my interest
area/s?
How many years have I done this project or
project level?
What do I need to complete my projects: space,
equipment, supplies, financial resources?
How much time do I have to commit to the
project?
Who can help me with the project?
4-H TEACHES
Through the more than 150 4-H projects available,
4-H members learn practical skills such as fitness,
meal preparation, clothing care, animal and human
nutrition, first aid, woodworking, gardening, and
more. Life skills are a part of every 4-H project.
These daily skills include:
solving problems
communicating
preparing for a career
serving others
choosing healthy lifestyles
managing change and challenges
4-H wants our members to receive more from their
projects than ribbons, trophies, trips and monetary
gains. 4-H wants our members to acquire project
knowledge and life skills. 4-H youth development
professionals have evidence that 4-H programs bene-
fit participants by helping them develop valuable life
skills that will enable them to become better citi-
zens.
Research shows that 4-H members use the responsi-
bility skills they developed from 4-H projects to com-
plete homework assignments, be on time at work,
and care for younger siblings. These skills are be
benefiting youth in school, at home, and on the job to
be more dependable, confident and qualified individ-
uals. In particular, knowledge gained from raising
4-H animal projects assisted students in their
understanding of biology, physiology, and genetics.
The Nebraska Extension Office - Dodge County
staff is happy to help with project selection as
needed.
10
National 4-H Conference
Nebraska 4-H youth who are interested in this
trip opportunity are selected through an applica-
tion and interview process.
A 4-H member may only attend the event once.
4-H members who win but decline an award to
attend the event are eligible to compete for the
same incentive again. There is no guarantee they
will be selected again.
National 4-H Conference
April 9-14, 2016 in Chevy Chase, Maryland
http://www.4-h.org/4-h-conference/
DIAMOND CLOVER Deadline: November 1, 2016 by 4:30 pm
Nebraska Extension Office - Dodge County
4-H members of all ages are encour-
aged to get involved in the optional
statewide form of recognition entitled
“The Diamond Clover Program”.
Member’s participation will enhance their efforts
with their Career Portfolio. 4-H members will
gain self-esteem from successfully completing the
requirements of each of the levels. Other oppor-
tunities the program offers includes: satisfac-
tion gained through progress made towards self
set goals, provide opportunity for developing
youth and adult partnerships and projects com-
pleted will be valuable additions to resumes. If
you did not participate in this program last year,
now is the time to choose what level you want to
start with. If you did participate last year then
you need to move up to the next level and set
your goals for this year. After filling out the front
side of the form, give it to your leader for safe
keeping throughout the year. In October, your
leader will return the form and you can fill out
the back page with your accomplishments.
4-H PROJECTS
SPECIAL GARDEN PROJECT Deadline: Wednesday January 27, 2016 by 4:30
Nebraska Extension Office—Dodge County
The Special Garden Project is a way to offer 4-H
members the chance to grow unusual and fun pro-
jects in their gardens. This year it is focused on
the colorful, Jazzy Mix Zinnia. This cultivar comes
in shades of burgundy-red, red, yellow, and orange
with cream, red, or yellow tips. The 1-2” blooms
are fully-double and semi-double. These zinnias
are a great cut flower that can get 20-26” tall. On
average it will take about 75-85 days for the plants
to bloom. In early April, 4-H’ers enrolled in the
Special Garden Project will receive seeds (one
‘packet’ per youth) and a newsletter with infor-
mation about raising and showing the flower. 4-H
members are able to enter their plants at County
and State Fair. To reserve your packet please —
contact Nebraska Extension — Dodge County.
