Jesus’ words today are hardly warm and fuzzy. In fact, his startling prediction of his suffering and death leads Peter to fervently object. Jesus was trying to prepare his disciples for his passion, but I imagine he was also talking to himself. Jesus was fully human and must have felt afraid to lose his life. Perhaps he was trying to build up his courage to face the inevitable. He didn’t want to die, but he knew God sometimes calls us to do what we don’t want to do.

In today’s first reading, Jeremiah shared Jesus’ experience. With the difficult task of proclaiming God’s judgment to the people of Judah, Jeremiah was regularly mocked and derided. He tried to keep from announcing God’s word but found himself unable to resist. God’s word became “like fire burning in [his] heart.” He was called to do what he did not want to do.

I felt the same way when I decided to study theology. My undergraduate major, speech pathology, prepared me for a well-paying, in-demand career. But theology and ministry tugged at my heart. Support Catholic Education in our community by parking in the All Saints Catholic School’s fair parking lot during the fair. Our main lot is conveniently located on 7th Ave SW between 2nd & 3rd Streets SW which is just a block and a half to the main gate. Additionally, we park cars on our main Parish lot on 3rd Street SW. All proceeds from parking go directly to the school’s operating budget. For your convenience, you can pay your parking fee with any major credit card. Look for our friendly volunteers in red aprons to direct you to our lots. Thank you in advance for supporting our school while you Do the Puyallup!

See the Community Services section for ways to get involved!

What would our communities, parishes, and country look like if we all recommitted to each other and the common good? If, instead of lamenting the dwindling hopes of our young people, we create institutions, relationships, and an economy that nurture human flourishing? If, instead of bickering about ideologies, people acknowledged the human dignity of others and worked together?

At their best, labor unions and institutions like them embody solidarity and subsidiarity while advancing the common good. They help workers "not only have more, but above all be more... [and] realize their humanity more fully in every respect" (Laborem Exercens, No. 20).

What is GoodNewsPeople? GoodNewsPeople is a dynamic parish-wide program that offers a way to explore the call of the New Evangelization. Through an engaging small-group process of prayer, reflection, and action, GoodNewsPeople explores and deepens our call to discipleship.

Does this sound like the program for you? If so, consider becoming a small group facilitator. Lead a group of your fellow parishioners in prayer, group discussion, and reflection. If you would like to host a group in your home but would rather not facilitate a group, there are opportunities for you to flex your hospitality muscle! To inquire, contact Aleah Patulot at (253) 848-2000 or Peggy Alston at (253) 286-0026.

Take the Lead with

School Supply Drive Success This year brought several changes to the School Supply Drive. We moved out of the parish office and into the All Saints School Cafeteria. We saw the return of some experienced volunteers as well as some new ones. The changes didn’t stop there—we also served many new children in this year’s two-week event. On the first day, we served 102 kids in the short span of just 2 hours. Families waited patiently for their turn, for as long as 1 ½ hours. Never have we seen a busier day! Last year, we served 276 kids total. After seeing over a third of that number in one day, we knew this year was going to be different. At the end of our two-week event, 382 children were equipped with the tools they need to succeed in school this year. Without your time, talent and treasure, this would not have been possible. Thank you, All Saints community!

Lord of All Labor A Prayer for Labor Day from Catholic Community Services

Jesus the Carpenter, As you, the laborer,

Built first with wood, and then with spirit, Transform all our work

So that we may see our labor come alive In the building of the Kingdom.

Let us arise to hear the call of the One Who has willed us to be fishers of men,

Workers in the vineyard, Laborers in the field.

For, through the love of your Father, We have become partners in creation,

Transforming the world.

And so may our livelihoods be transformed— Not to be a daily burden, An assault on our dignity,

But a vehicle for your grace, An expression of your gifts,

Your Spirit at work in the world, Transforming all it touches,

Through the loving heart of the Creator, Through the hands of his creatures.

Lord Jesus, be with all laborers everywhere.

Affirm the dignity of our work, The meaning of our toil,

The grace to our vocations, As you were with Peter the Fisherman,

Paul the Tentmaker, Lydia the Business Owner, Francis the Churchbuilder,

Patrick the Shepherd, Isidore the Farmer,

Dorothy the Reformer, Medical workers like Mother Guerin,

Teachers like Frances Cabrini.

Throughout history, tinkers, smiths and servants, Builders, bakers and artisans

Have stood beside kings and nobility As the greatest of your servants.

And so, we lift up all who are unable to find work And those whose work does not sustain them.

Help us to embrace the work you set before us.

May the work of all our hands honor you, So that like these saints and all your blessed servants,

We may remain with you always.

Amen.

Children are invited to the sacristy during the Liturgy of the Word (leaving after the opening prayer, returning after the Creed) to hear the Word proclaimed at their level.

Adult volunteers needed! We need adult volunteers to be readers and presenters as well as assistant for the leaders. Each week, the reader proclaims the reading and gospel, and the presenter delivers an age-appropriate, interactive homily to the children. Time commitment is just once every two months. Materials are provided ahead of time to prepare for the readings and homily. Assistant to the Leader guide the children to the classroom. The Holy Spirit does the rest! If you can help as a reader, presenter or assistant, or for more information about the program, contact Kathryn Ramous at [email protected].

Thank you! Thank you to all who participated in

Weird Animals VBS 2014, from the youth and adult volunteers, to parishioners who donated scholarships, to those who donated food items. Your generosity is a real inspiration!

We had a wonderful Vacation Bible Camp this summer! There were over one hundred campers and about 60 adult and youth adult volunteers. Through the games, activities, and the incredible warmth of everyone involved, we were able to share with our kids that Jesus loves them in a real way. It was also a wonderful example of how this parish supports and loves the children in our community. Once again, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you!

SEEL Retreat Program Invites you to Draw Nearer to God

The Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life (SEEL) is a 9-month retreat format of the Spiritual Exercises of St.

Ignatius, with retreat communities in both Seattle and Tacoma. The SEEL retreat goes from September through May and is a powerful, life-changing program of prayer and spiritual direction that can be done by busy people in the midst of their daily lives. SEEL is accepting applications now for the retreat starting in September of 2014. Learn more at our website at www.seelpugetsound.org or call (206) 721-3518 or call Bobbie Beaudreau at (253) 845-0688.

Grief Support Ministry

We at All Saints faith community, extend our continued prayers and support to those who have experienced a loss, or know someone who has. One way we would like to help is by inviting you to join us on Monday afternoons from October 6th

to November 10th for a six week class filled with encouragement and support to all who are working through the grief process. We know that the coming days and months may be painful for you. Let us walk with you on this journey. You may have been walking this for quite some time or for just a few weeks, whatever, you need not walk alone.

Following are some of the topics that will be discussed:

What is Normal When Grieving?

How to Be Gentle With Yourself While Grieving

Grieving in Your Own Way

Giving Yourself Permission to Grieve

Being Patient With Yourself

The series will begin Monday, October 6 – November 10. We will meet at 2:30 PM in the Parish Office, at 204 6th Ave. S.W. Please let me know if this time does not work for you. You are important to us and we will try to accommodate your needs.

If you have any questions or need more information please call Marj Patten at (253) 535-6750.

Parish Groups

An outing to Fraser Downs in Surrey, BC, is being planned for November and your response is needed to determine if there is enough interest in the trip. The date to consider is Sunday, November 9. We would leave Holy Disciples at 8:30AM, travel by motor-coach, and return at approximately 7PM. It is a 3-hr ride which would put us at Fraser Downs in time for a lunch buffet at "The Homestretch" and, of course, casino and harness race betting. The cost of the trip including the buffet and motor-coach transportation (not including beverages or gambling) is between $50 to $65 per person. We will need at least 25 to make the trip worthwhile and up to 47 to fill the motor-coach and obtain the best cost-per-person rate. To express your interest, please contact Janice Melodia at 360-893-0871. Thank you!

Storytelling as Spiritual Practice

with TAD MONROE Thursday, September 11, 2014 | 7:00—9:00PM

LIBERTY BAR - 517 15th Ave E, Seattle, WA 98112

Discernment happens amidst the dance of many stories: the story of scripture, the story of the church, and our own

personal stories. Join us as we explore the art and practice of storytelling. We will talk about how and why story works and why it is such an important spiritual practice—particularly in the context

of Ignatian spirituality.
