Civil Rights Day Celebration This year marked the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In honor of this momentous historical event, we celebrated the signing of the Act on July 2 — exactly 50 years to the day. The Pregame ceremony included many notable guests including Hubert “Buck” Humphrey and the Humphrey family; Dr. Josie Johnson; T. Mychael Rambo; Peter Ackerberg, a member of the Minnesota Freedom Riders; and leadership of Minnesota’s NAACP — Claudie Washington, W.C. Jordan and Nathaniel Khaliq. William Binga Memorial William Binga was a notable third baseman for several local Negro League teams — a legend of his day, but due to racial barriers he never received the recognition he deserved. For nearly 65 years, Binga did not even have a gravestone at his burial site. Thanks to the Negro League Grave Markers Project, The Donaldson Network and the Dave Winfield Foundation, William Binga finally received his gravestone with a memorial service in his honor. Red Tails Event The Minnesota Twins were one of the proud sponsors of the Red Tail Squadron RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit that stopped in St. Paul this July. The exhibit included a showing of the film Rise Above about the Tuskegee Airmen rising above many obstacles to fly and fight for freedom during World War II. Dr. Harold Brown, a Tuskegee combat pilot, shared his history, experiences and challenges at a reception following the film. Additionally, Dr. Brown was honored as the Veteran Flag Raiser at the 2014 All-Star Home Run Derby.
