The average distance from Chase Field to Prescott is only about 100 or so miles, but on May 16th it seemed closer to a million. That’s because for Brad Ziegler, his lovely wife Kristen and my- self, we could barely contain our collec- tive anticipation as we made our commute north for the organi- zation’s newest and most moving “Diamonds Back” Field Building dedication to date. Brad Ziegler Field, with support from APS, local businesses and a donation from our reliever him- self, was the D-backs’ 34th such field dedica- tion since the program’s inception in 2000. That means 34 tracts of land throughout our state with revamped baseball amenities like lights, scoreboards, fencing, irrigation, grass and dirt – all earmarked to give youth ballplayers a beauti- ful new field to play on. But unlike the previ- ous 33 dedications, this was no ordinary field. The D-backs and Brad chose this location due to the tragedy that struck Yarnell, Prescott Val- ley and the Granite Mountain Hotshots last year. The organization and all of our great fans were quick to collectively provide relief in the form of over $700,000, while assist- ing military, fire, police and all first respond- ers is a passion of Brad’s and his Pastime for Patriots foundation. So when it came time to select our newest field location earlier this year, it truly was the appropriate choice. The dedication ceremonies are always emo- tional, but this one took the cake. Prescott Mayor Marlin Kuykendall, Arizona Senator Steve Pierce, Arizona Diamondbacks Foun- dation Board President Mike Kennedy, APS President and CEO Don Brandt and I were all choked up and teary during our remarks. Then came Brad, who could not get through his sec- ond word without breaking down into tears and sobbing. He spoke from the heart and showed the humility and generosity that makes him so unique. I was as proud of him that afternoon as I am every time he enters a close game and baffles the opposition with his submarine de- livery. And as we stated at the conclusion of the event, Brad not only provided a special place for children to play our wonderful game, he built a much-needed memorial as well for families and a community that continue to heal. Brad’s example of the character and kindness that our players seem to consistently display not only exemplified the inner strength and sense of obligation that the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation and our organization thrive upon, it also goes hand in hand with what we feel is our moral duty when it comes to making an impact in the Arizona community and beyond. Brad Ziegler Field is just one example of that giving back, and I guarantee it won’t be the last. Derrick M. The Arizona Diamondbacks and the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation are proud to have an outstanding community partner in Dignity Health. The Dignity Health family reflects some of Arizona’s top medical facilities including Barrow Neurological Institute, Chandler Regional Medical Center, Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, and the new St. Joseph’s Westgate Medical Center.

As a founding partner of the Arizona Diamondbacks, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center has stood alongside the D-backs on a number of important health initiatives. Since the beginning, the two organizations have shared a passionate commitment to improving lives in our community by partnering to promote healthy choices, awareness, community outreach programs and much more. The outstanding executives, physicians, and nurses at Dignity Health have provided expert advice, support, education and leadership to ensure D-backs fans have access to top quality information and resources.

In February 2013, the two organizations joined forces to launch the inaugural D-backs Race Against Cancer. The second annual D-backs Race Against Cancer presented by the U of A Cancer Center at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center served as a dynamic community platform for Dignity and the D-backs to engage fans in a health-centered event that promoted awareness, resources and support for those dealing with cancer.

Over 4,000 runners, walkers, survivors and fans participated in the 5K and 1 Mile Banana Boat Family Fun Walk on Saturday, May 3. Attendees had access to an interactive Wellness Zone, complete with D-backs partners and nonprofit organizations that distributed the latest information on nutrition, exercise and screening.

Race proceeds benefited the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation in support of nonprofit organizations that provide screening, treatment and support for those dealing with cancer. Visit dbacks.com/race for photos of the 2014 event. Community Partner PROFILE“DIAMONDS BACK” FIELD BUILDING PROGRAM

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT

Since 2000, the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation has built or refurbished 34 baseball fields representing a community investment of more than $10 million. APS, the presenting partner of the “Diamonds Back” Field Building program, is the ideal partner for the award-winning community initiative. In addition to financial support, APS representatives provide leadership, community insight, technical expertise and advice to the Foundation and field-building team.

The “Diamonds Back” Field Building program is just one of many important programs that APS sponsors – all designed to build thriving communities. APS plays an important role in each of the communities it serves. The APS commitment to creating a brighter future for local communities is exemplified by their extensive development initiatives across the state. The Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation is proud to partner with APS - a leader in the community that shares the Foundation’s passion for leaving a lasting legacy.

With support from APS and charitable contributions from D-backs players, the program has allowed children from across the

state to play baseball and softball at quality facilities. The fields generally feature new lights, a branded electronic scoreboard, new fencing and backstops, new irrigation and new grass and dirt with additional support provided by local contractors and businesses.

This year’s Brad Ziegler Field, the 34th since the program’s inception, has the same purpose as the others – to provide a quality facility for Arizona children to play baseball and softball, but it means so much more than that. The D-backs reliever wasted little time after joining the team in becoming a key community leader. He believes in giving back and is an ardent supporter of the military and all first responders. Brad Ziegler Field will memorialize the 19 members of the Prescott Granite Mountain Hotshot firefighting crew who gave their lives in the line of duty last June. During the emotional dedication, Ziegler expressed how proud he was to have his name on a field associated with the firefighters and their legacies. The newly improved field will help get young kids excited about baseball while honoring the memory of those brave firefighters.

The Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation and Paul Goldschmidt have teamed up to launch “Goldy’s Fund 4 Kids.” Paul and Amy Goldschmidt have a passion for giving back. They can often be found volunteering together at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. They engage and interact with the kids and their families, providing a distraction while receiving medical treatment.

The first fundraising initiative for Goldy’s Fund 4 Kids is a “Bleacher Creature” program to raise money to benefit Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Fans can make a $44 donation and receive a limited-edition Goldy Bleacher Creature 10-inch plush doll at dbacks.com/goldyfund or at D-backs home games at Season Ticket Headquarters (Section 111) before the 7th inning.

Proceeds from the Bleacher Creature will benefit Goldy’s Fund 4 Kids. Join Paul and Amy Goldschmidt to support programs that lift the spirits of children and their families at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

COMMUNITY GRANTS AND GRAND SLAM AWARDS

FOUNDATION SPOTLIGHT

The Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation Com-munity Grants and Grand Slam Awards are the centerpiece of giving for the Foundation. Each year 501(c)3 non-profit organizations in Arizo-na are encouraged to apply via the United Way’s online E-Cimpact grant program.

Arizona Diamondbacks employees, executives, President’s Council members, season ticket holders, corporate partners and members of the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation Execu-tive Council thoughtfully review each and ev-ery application. Top scoring applications are then forwarded to the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation Board of Directors for final review and approval. The Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation Board of Directors is a 13-member board consisting of Diamondback and Maricopa County appointees.

The Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation funded 72 different organizations totaling $818,000. Nine Grand Slam Awards were awarded and ranged from $15,000 to $100,000 each. In addition to the Grand Slam Awards, program grants are given statewide to non-profit organi-zations in the amounts of $1,000 to $5,000. The Grand Slam Awards and program grants are made possible by fundraising efforts by the Ari-zona Diamondbacks Foundation.

To learn more about grants and other funding programs, visit dbacks.com/community. 2014 grant applications are being accepted now through the end of July 2014.

D-BACKS GIVE BACK 50/50 RAFFLE SUPPORTED BY WESTERN REFINING The 50/50 Raffle raised more than $1 million in its first season. Last season, the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation 50/50 Raffle supported by Western Refining surpassed year one with $1.6 million. The 2014 raffle is off to a great start compared to the first six games of the 2013 season.

Tickets can be purchased through the 6th inning for $2 each, 3 for $5, 10 for $10 or 25 for $20 in the stands from an enthusiastic raffle ticket seller and at the D-backs Community Clubhouse located on the main concourse behind section 131. DONATE For more than 17 years, the Arizona Diamondbacks ownership group, employees, players, corporate partners and fans have been working to-gether to “give back” to those in need of a helping hand in our com-munity. The award-winning community efforts of our Foundation are fo-cused on impact areas that include homelessness, indigent healthcare, veterans, education and children’s programs of all types. In addition, the Foundation has created strategic programs that address the needs of teachers, police and firefighters.

Since forming the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation in 1997, a year before the expansion team took the field in 1998, the D-backs and the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation have made charitable contributions totaling $37.5 million to nonprofit organizations throughout Arizona.

Visit dbacks.com/giveback for more information or to “give back” with a contribution to one of the many programs.

MYSTERY BALLSupport the D-backs Foundation by purchasing a baseball signed by one of your D-backs favorites. Fans can purchase a Mystery Ball box containing an autographed baseball signed by D-backs play-ers, coaches and alumni. Funds raised benefit the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation and are used to support youth sports and education initiatives.

Mystery Ball sales begin when gates open at section 130. Quantities are limited. 2014 dates include: Saturday, June 7 and Saturday, August 30.

PLAY BALL FUNDEach month during the 2014 season, the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation together with Chase and Western Refining will award ten $1,000 grants to Arizona based youth sports teams. Any Arizona youth team, league or organization can apply for funds to support player equipment, training for youth players or coaches, assistance with fees and expenses or facility improvements. Apply at dbacks.com/playball.

PLAYER, COACH, VOLUNTEERThe Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation and the D-backs Baseball Academy would like to recognize outstanding youth players, coaches, and dedicated team volunteers on a monthly basis during the 2014 D-backs season. One youth player (ages 6-18), one coach, and one sports team volunteer will be selected from submitted nominations. Submission must include a brief description of why the player, coach, or volunteer is deserving of the recognition. The D-backs’ philosophy is that it is “More important to be a Major League Person, than a Major League Player.”

Each winner’s organization/team/school will receive a $500 grant. The winner will be invited to a D-backs game to be recognized on-field dur-ing a pregame ceremony and will receive a D-backs jersey, four D-backs lower level tickets to the game on their day of recognition and have the opportunity to watch batting practice from the field. Nominate an outstanding player, coach or volunteer at dbacks.com/academy.
