DISMAS MINISTRY
SPRING GREETING CARD DRIVE
The Dismas Ministry of St. Charles Borromeo Parish will be
conducting a Greeting Card Drive the weekends of April 21
and 22 and April 28 and 29. The purpose of this drive will
be to replenish our supplies of
greeting cards used to correspond
with inmates at the Grafton Correc-
tional Institution. Cards are sent for
Birthdays, Holidays, and Veterans
Days to cheer the inmates who in
many cases have no one else,
a Corporal Work of Mercy commanded by Our Lord.
Please drop off your unused greeting cards to the Parish Hall
Saint Vincent DePaul Room before or after Mass on these
weekends. Dismas Ministry team members will be there to
accept your donations. Card donations may also be dropped
off in the Parish Office from April 21st to the 29th. PLEASE
DO NOT LEAVE CARDS IN THE CHURCH. Monetary
Donations will also be accepted in the Sunday Collection
Basket (mark envelope “Dismas Ministry”) or in the Parish
Office. Your Generosity is Greatly Appreciated.
This week we mark the ninety-fifth anniversary of
St Charles Borromeo Parish. Last week, in this column,
we looked back on 1923 to 1967, the forty-four years of
Msgr Nicholas Monaghan’s pastorate. Monsignor died in
September of 1967. Father James Vesely served as parish adminis-
trator until a new pastor was named in January 1968: it was
Cleveland Bishop Clarence Issenmann who appointed
Msgr Thomas C Corrigan as St Charles second pastor.
Msgr Corrigan was a native Clevelander, ordained in 1945, who
had just completed eighteen years as diocesan director of the
Catholic Youth Organization. Monsignor Corrigan’s most pressing
task at St Charles was to introduce the many new ideas and
practices formulated during the 1962-1965 Second Vatican
Council.
The most visible changes came in the areas of liturgy and
worship. The venerable Latin Mass, that had nourished the
spiritual life of the Church for four hundred years, was gradually
replaced with Mass in English and with the priest facing the
congregation. The Sunday “sermon,” often a lecture on church
doctrine, was now called the “homily” and it was to be Scripturally
based. The Sunday Scriptures went to a three year cycle--attend
Mass faithfully for three years and you would hear all four Gospels
in their entirety. (As opposed to the pre-Vatican Two one year
cycle).
The church sanctuary was re-arranged; the altar was moved
from the back wall, the altar rail was removed, the pulpit moved to
the left, and the area was carpeted to cover new additions in wood
that did not match the old terrazzo sanctuary floor.
Some ancient practices of the Church, long forgotten, were
re-instituted; laity were trained as lectors to read the Scriptures and
to assist with worship; Eucharistic Ministers were recruited to help
with distribution of communion and to bring the Eucharist to the
aged and ill at home and in hospitals; those attending Mass were
reminded that “full, conscious, active liturgical participation” was
the goal; congregational singing was encouraged and new forms of
music/ and instruments were introduced; Communion could be
received in the hand; penitents had the option of anonymous or face
-to-face confession; the Permanent Diaconate was revived, just to
name a few.
In addition to veteran parish organizations, such as the Guild
and Men’s Club, there were many new activities with special focus
on adult faith formation and spirituality. One of the most effective
tools, in the 1970’s, was the Christ Renews His Parish weekend
retreat. Hundreds of St Charles parishioners made CRHP and then
were energized to become involved in parish ministries. In the
1980’s the RENEW program also challenged parishioners to a
deeper faith commitment.
As the Parma community aged, so did the parish membership.
From a high of 2,800 students in 1964, the school population drifted
down to 620 students in 1987.
During his nineteenth year as pastor, Msgr Corrigan reached
the then-mandatory retirement age of 70 in May of 1987.
Monsignor retired to St Brendan Parish in North Olmsted. He
returned to St Charles frequently for major parish events and for
the significant dates in his life. He often said “my heart will always
be at St Charles.” After a short illness, Monsignor died in January
1995—just a few months short of his fiftieth anniversary of
ordination. His funeral Mass took place at his “beloved
St Charles.”
BAPTISMS Congratulations and God's Blessings to Jessica & Josiah
