If you have been by Allenbury Gardens recently, you will see that major construction is now

underway. Phase 2 construction is progressing well with completion of demolition, and we

have now dug a giant hole. The processes of pouring concrete forms and foundations have

begun on what will be the new parking garage.

Available Opportunities Now Hiring. The TCHC Community Animator Program is returning. TCHC will be hiring 15 Community Animators for the Leslie Nymark and Allenbury Gardens communities. Overview of the Community Animator Role Community Animators will work closely with Toronto Community Housing’s revitalization team to make connections with individuals and groups in Leslie Nymark and Allenbury Gardens. In addition, you will support programs and initiatives that will lead to increased tenant participation during the redevelopment process. Activities:

Participate in training sessions and meetings as required

Assist with organizing meetings, workshops and events to engage the community

Conduct outreach to inform tenants of community meetings, workshops, opportunities and events

Provide administrative and/or operational assistance to support local programs, events and initiatives

Being an animator means this is an on-call position. Generally community animators will work up to 20 hours every month, with an hourly rate of $15.

TCHC Revitalization Team Update

Please welcome Nawal Al Busaidi as Manager, Revitalization and Renewal

Communities and Andre Brown as Community Revitalization Assistant for Allenbury

Gardens. Nawal will be coordinating the engagement and community economic

development aspects of the Allenbury Gardens revitalization for the onsite and relocated

phases of the project. Andre will provide support to residents in all revitalization related

issues; as well as implementing the future projects and opportunities for tenants. Andre is

also the community contact for all revitalization enquires.

Programs and Services in

our Neighborhood

Settlement and Language Services

There are 22 agencies offering settlement support services to newcomers to Toronto. The programs and services offered by these agencies range from assistance with finding housing to finding appropriate education facilities for children and adults, to helping with various forms and applications (e.g., OHIP, child benefits, etc.). The vast majority of settlement service providers offer English language classes – LINC or ESL – with supplementary support services, such as childcare and assistance with transportation.

Health Services

There are 65 health service providers in North Toronto, of which 21 focus on mental health and addiction services, 16 work on health promotion/information, and seven specialize in health services for seniors. There are three Community Health Centres running five sites that do not require health insurance in the region: Unison Health and Community Services (two branches), Flemingdon Health Centre (two branches) and The Anne Johnston Health Station.

Employment Services

More than 30 service providers across the city offer employment support services such as assistance with resume development, interview skills, enhanced language training focusing on professional language, mentorship and internship programs, and assistance with job placements. Scholarship Opportunity

The Allenbury Gardens Revitalization Scholarship Program provides financial assistance in the form of a scholarship or bursary to residents who have made contributions to the development of their community and who want to pursue postsecondary education or training. This program, launched in 2013, is offered by Toronto Community Housing and FRAM affiliate partnerships, the development partner for the Allenbury Gardens revitalization.

The program offers:

One $4,000 scholarship award towards tuition fees for a year of postsecondary education or

training and payable directly to the institution (i.e., high school equivalency preparatory courses,

college, university, career academy or trade school).

Two $500 bursaries, payable directly to the recipients, to cover costs for education materials or

services. This includes books, lab fees, transportation and childcare.

Who is eligible?

A current resident of Allenbury Gardens or a resident who has been temporary relocated due to ongoing revitalization.

Your name must be listed on your household’s lease agreement with Toronto Community

Housing.

Priority will be given to residents who have made contributions as community leaders or who are

involved in community building and development initiatives in Allenbury Gardens or surrounding

neighbourhoods.

Entering into or currently enrolled in a postsecondary program at a recognized Canadian

institution (i.e., high school equivalency preparatory courses, college, university, career academy

or trade school).

How are winners chosen?

The Allenbury Gardens Revitalization Scholarship Program places a high value on community leadership and involvement, academic goals and accomplishments, volunteer work and work experience as part of attaining your long term educational and careers goals. Winners will be chosen by an impartial adjudication committee and will be evaluated based on:

Academic goals and accomplishments

Workplace/volunteer experience (résumé)

Essay/personal statement (one page)

Financial need

Leadership and involvement in the community
