Bluebird Care is helping people in Alresford & Winchester stay independent in their own homes for longer

Most of us will, at some point, find that we will have to look after our parents or loved ones when they reach their golden years, just as they looked after us in our early years.

While some people would like to live out their days in a nursing home others would prefer to be looked after in the comfortable surroundings of their own home while it still remains possible to do so.

Norman & Claire Murphy are the owners of Bluebird Care Winchester & Eastleigh. Claire, a local Alresford girl herself together with her husband Norman set up Bluebird Care Winchester & Eastleigh earlier this year to provide quality care to people in their own homes at the level they would expect for their own family and friends. Claire said, “We are a family business and family is at the heart of everything we do.”

Bluebird Care is fully compliant with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and works very closely with local charities including, Age UK Winchester, The Alzheimer’s Society, Marie Curie Cancer Care & The MS Society to name but a few. The office is dedicated to the Alresford, Winchester, Eastleigh and surrounding villages and is based in Winnall, Winchester.

A realistic alternative to going into a care homeNorman said: “We are a provider of a wide range of home care services to people of all ages in their own homes. When any of us are faced with a situation where additional care is required for either ourselves, a loved one or a friend, it is often thought that the stark choice is either

to live self-sufficiently (without help) or go into a home. We at Bluebird Care offer people a realistic alternative by providing highly qualified, experienced, police checked care staff to help out in their own homes. This allows people to live comfortably at home with familiar friends, relatives and possessions around them. No upheaval, no stress”.

“Everybody has different needs and that is something we at Bluebird Care can provide…an individual personalised service. We offer not just hourly care or support but also part hour visits such as 15 minutes to remind you to take your medication or 30 minutes to help prepare your lunch. We also offer live-in 24 hour care every day of the week or we can just do a day or two when family are away. This flexibility allows you to design your care package to suit you or your family’s needs at the time that is best for you.”

Good old fashioned serviceNorman added: “We are very proud of our flexibility and strongly believe in ‘good old fashioned service’ and this is implemented in everything we do. We keep comprehensive records of each care visit and provide the best possible care staff to each and every one of our valued customers. In addition, we continually monitor and train our care staff making sure that they provide the exact care standards that have been agreed with our customers. Lastly we keep in constant contact with our customers and their families to ensure they are completely happy with the services being provided. This is what ‘good old fashioned service’ means to us.”

Bluebird Care work very closely with the discharge team at Winchester’s Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Hampshire County Council’s Adult Services Team & the NHS’s Primary Care Trust Continuing Care Team to ensure successful home discharges. Norman said: “A successful home discharge relates not only to medical issues but a supportive environment of carers who can assist the patient in critical activities of daily living so allowing a steady convalescence to independent living. Unfortunately, in a modern displaced society, not everyone can call upon ready family support during this critical period. Bluebird Care seek to address this critical vacuum of care in order to support an early successful discharge and so improve patient flow from hospital to the community.”

Highly qualified local carersBluebird Care has over 140 offices throughout the UK and Ireland, each locally owned and employing highly qualified local people. “Our carers tend to build strong relationships

with our customers, which is key to the strength of our service. The power ofPosi+ive thought

Positivity and negativity, those polarized opposites, one white and shiny the other scarred and black. But is the human condition naturally predisposed towards negativity, making us at

times irritated by those who are overtly positive?

Popular culture and religion are constantly reminding and equipping us with the tools with which to be positive: Every cloud has a silver lining. Smile and the world smiles with you. Thank your lucky stars. Is your glass half full or half empty?

A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. (Prov. 17-22) All of which leads me to conclude that we have to work hard not only to be but also to remain up-beat, it being all too easy to slide into the mire of negativity.

Who can blame us when seemingly we live in such a negative world. The reality of life for so many is in fact horribly negative, yet it is often those people with the least in any given situation who remain the most positive with an immense generosity of spirit.

But one can’t generalize, A friend was told recently that due to her constant negativity she would fail at everything she attempted; in fact she battles her negative demons

daily with a mix of positivity and self deprecating humour, a battle made harder thanks to that negative comment but positivity triumphed. Things are rarely what they seem.

Likewise there is a parent on the school run who has to be the most naturally positive person ever encountered. With a huge smile and a cheerful ’Hiya’ for everyone near he charges the air with positive ions that you cannot fail to be affected by.

Has he always been that way? Let's hope so; either way his genuine positivity is from the soul, enhancing the lives of others and presumably his own.

Is negativity born out of privilege? In a society based on the acquisition of wealth, consumables and even fame, have we become too picky, demanding perfection and never attaining it, finding fault with everything.Even when something is marvellous some are still heard to say ‘It won’t last’.Negativity makes for a hard life; to be positive in certain circumstances is of course difficult but positivity is the alchemy of the human condition. Once you find a way to turn gloom into gold anything is possible.

What do you think?GG

A wildlife charity is

serving up a ‘bangers

and cash’ initiative

as part of a novel fundraising

drive to boost its vital work

throughout Hampshire.

HART Wildlife Rescue, based at

Medstead, desperately needs

more space to cope with a record

number of admissions and has

planning permission to expand

into an adjacent field. This will

provide accommodation for

larger mammals and improve

rehabilitation facilities for

numerous species. To accelerate

its fundraising work, it has now

joined up with Giveacar, a non-

profit social enterprise which

collects unwanted and unused

cars for charity – turning scrap

into cash. Regardless of their

Turn scrap cars into cash to help wildlife

condition, cars are collected

free-of-charge nationwide by

Giveacar then sold through an

online auction or disposed of at

an authorised treatment facility.

Profits from the sale can then be

donated to HART. Even if the

banger is scrapped, it can still

net between £40 and £160.“We

have already had several useful

donations towards the project

but our running costs have

gone up so much with so many

admissions that we have been

unable to put aside very much

from our normal fundraising

efforts,” said hospital manager

Chairman Greenland-Jones.

“We need a new initiative to

help us reach our target and

hope Giveacar will be it.”

Many car owners want an easy

and completely free way to get

rid of their old car. Giveacar will

help them to do this in a legal

and environmentally friendly

way. The scheme is intended to

discourage those irresponsible

owners who may consider

abandoning their cars. Alex

Harvey, manager of Giveacar,

welcomed the partnership. “The

preservation of Britain’s wildlife

is more important now than ever

given how quickly woodland

is disappearing. Giveacar is

extremely proud to support the

work the HART Wildlife Rescue

does.”

Frequently Asked Questions Here’s a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say ‘carpet’ what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don’t quibble if the areas are a little larger - it’s all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don’t price into the job at these discount prices is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen tvs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitable we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any ‘hidden’ extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.

Upholstery we specialise in cleaning and refreshing 3 piece suites (at our current offer price of £97). Fabric Master, our special upholstery and cleaning system is safe, gentle, and very effective. Fibres are restored to their original beauty and softness - you’ll see!

Alresford Log RunThe Rugby Club together with the Fire Brigade have organised a Log Run on 11th August in memory or Alex Watley. All money raised will go to CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young). Four teams will each be carrying a 110kg log around a 2.7mile course at Arlebury Park. This event will be an ideal opportunity to recognise our acquisition of the land adjoining Arlebury Park, which has been purchased for much needed rugby pitches. We have invited the Mayor of Winchester to come along and present the trophy and turn the first turf. Come along and cheer on the guys.

Alresford Recreation Centre (ARC)We are pleased to report that the Solar Panels installed in February are showing a better than planned return and should produce, at least, an extra £1000 over the financial year. This is despite the bad weather. The roof at the front of the ARC will be re-tiled over the summer and repairs to the changing room ceiling below will be carried out together with improved lighting of the car park.

PCSO Steve Hull says goodbyeSteve Hull our local PCSO is leaving Alresford. Steve has worked closely with the young people of the town and been responsible for many fun filled events. ISSUE 69 AUGUST www.alresfordforum.co.uk

All year long schools across the UK have been preparing for the

Olympics and Alresford has been no exception. Numerous projects and activities have fired the children’s imagination. Local primary schools have been hosting and passing on their own Olympic Torch and classrooms and corridors are decorated with Olympic artwork. Who couldn’t be excited as the big event approaches!

Alresford Decorative and Fine Art Society decided to join in the fun and sponsored a visiting artist to work with groups of children from local primary schools and years 7 and 8 Perins students to create Olympic sculptures. Darcy Turner is a sculptor who works with schools across the UK and his work is already on display at Sun Hill Infant School (the revolving tree in the Magical Musical Garden) and at Four Marks Primary School. He agreed to run a two day workshop, Perins generously offered facilities and the dates were carefully chosen to precede Perins own Olympic week which culminated in a special Olympiad involving local primary schools.

It was a very ambitious and exciting project, made possible with an additional grant from the Nadfas Patricia Fay Memorial Fund, supporting young people in all areas of the arts. It was huge fun and over two days - 19/20 June - groups of children from the five feeder primary schools - Four Marks, Cheriton, Ropley, Preston Candover and Sun Hill Junior School - spent a day at Perins and designed and constructed their sculptures

A team of girls from Perins retained the trophy for the U15 Girls

County Track Championships at the Winchester Stadium and Track recently.

All the girls were placed in the top three in all of their races and had wins by Georgia Howard (200m ‘B’ String) and crucially Jess Houghton and Katie Butler (1500m ‘A’ and ‘B’ String runners respectively) towards the end of

Mountbatten school pupils, Beata Dunne and Emily White, have

triumphed in a regional cookery competition held between secondary schools in Hampshire and West Sussex. In total, eight top young cooks aged between 12-14 years from Hampshire and West Sussex battled it out at the finals to become the 2012 Create and Cook competition champions. With ingredients from the South Downs and Sussex coast, Hampshire’s chalk-fed streams, farms and fruit orchards, all the young cooks had designed menus which showcased their region’s local produce, which is the focus of the Create and Cook Competition. The final was held at Newlyns Farm Cookery School near Hook.

from heavy zigged wire. The results included athletes, a torch, logos, horses heads, rowing boats and oarsmen, a basket ball player complete with basket and ball and many more. At the end of each day coloured plastic was threaded through the wire to highlight the design and each group of children had to present their masterpiece and discuss what they had done. The children worked really hard and were very proud of what they had achieved. The day the sculptures were positioned high on the wall of the Hub in the middle of Perins site was very exciting and created a lot of interest from passing staff and students. A mobile crane was required to complete the task. Do have a look at them if you’re passing.

The National Society of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies (NADFAS) is an arts based charity with members pursuing a mutual interest in the arts through monthly lectures and organised visits. There are over 300 Societies in the UK and on mainland Europe with over 90,000 members. Alresford DFAS started in 1988, meeting in the John Pearson Hall and later moving to Itchen Abbas Village Hall. It has 287 members and a waiting list. Over the years we have sponsored many young arts projects in local schools as well as doing voluntary work in local museums and historic houses and recording the interior of churches as part of a National Scheme.

Phil Ponsonby, Chief Operating Officer for Food Retail at the Southern Co-operative, which sponsors the competition said: "It was very difficult to judge as the standard from all schools was so high but on the day, Emily and Beata were our overall winners as their menu was cooked to perfection.”

Beata and Emily won £1,000 for their school food technology department, a framed copy of their recipes which have been professional styled and photographed and a master class with Executive Chef Andy Mackenzie, one of the founders of the competition, in his kitchen at Lainston House Hotel near Winchester. Our man at the Olympics

For someone working in the sports and cultural sector the London Bid to stage the Olympics was like winning the lottery – mixed feelings of huge pleasure, fear and expectations which bound you

into the wonderful ambition of doing something BIG on a GLOBAL scale in the UK. Yes, as usual we joked about it, finding many things to laugh about including our never ending carping about the cost, legacy, and traffic. The long lead-in time was essential to deliver the ambition but in some ways it made us all feel that it was a "long way off, hence we could forget about it, thinking more about England's football prospects, tennis and the Queen’s Jubilee. But when the "flame" arrived in the South West of England and the "torch relay" with its many human stories started, suddenly it was on our doorstep with thousands of people turning out in the rain. When, nearly two years ago I applied to join up as a volunteer for the Games the prospect seemed fairly unreal - it was done on- line, seemed straightforward and then went completely silent. Eventually I was interviewed by a very pleasant young man, after which I again heard nothing for many months until I was asked to attend a fairly large training event at Wembley Arena - this was more like a festival with Eddie Izzard doing a turn and several thousand people struggling through the snow. This experience did two things for me; one was to show me in very practical terms that the whole of the UK seemed to have volunteered - people of all ages, colours and experiences were brought together for this single purpose. The second was more direct, in that I was just one of several thousand people, having to take instructions and buckle down to "doing what I was told". The people who were doing the training were impressive, in that it was done efficiently often by people who had been involved in previous Games. The "Gamesmakers"-us volunteers- were now being distributed,

uniformed and slotted into jobs involving everything from venue management, cleaning & catering, to looking after the "Olympic family"- a truly complex undertaking! So on a recent rainy Sunday afternoon it was time to have my first real insight into what I had let myself into. I walked through the glass canyons of Westfield gradually getting closer to the Olympic Park. We went through the now all too familiar routines imported from any major international airport, supervised it seemed by very young looking members of the uniformed services. Once through I was struck by the sheer scale of what was before me. The stadium, the lanes of white walkways, Anish Kapoor’s fantastic construction, the Aquatics Centre, with the first ever bespoke Water Polo arena and more. The Hampshire trees looked great - I think Hillers got the contract for this and the landscaping looks really well established after all the rain! It was too much to take in as well as trying to find where I was supposed to go - I with two others walked to various entrances only to be re-directed to other places. It will certainly take me a few more visits to the site to get familiar with just where everything is - my only hope is that I will find my destination when I do my first morning shift! I was struck that the senior venue people that spoke to us had strong Australian accents -yes they had first-hand experience of the Sydney Games. On moving finally into the areas I would be working in, two senior people went over the detail of what I was expected to do, were knowledgeable, appreciative, kind and very human.

I had a real sense of being a young boy again on the first day of secondary school - confused but excited as to what is yet to come. Yinnon Ezra, MBE

Success of the Queen’s Diamond JubileeThe whole town came together to celebrate Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee with a full week of events for all to enjoy.

Events ranged from the Sun Hill School 60yr Time Capsule, Old Alresford Beacon Lighting, literary tours of the town, and the culmination of the week’s events being Alresford Music Festival.

Instigating and organising the events week was the Alresford Chamber of Commerce. Having brought together many local groups, the Chamber’s committee members worked hard to build websites, issue leaflets and organise a Jubilee Photographic Competition. Special thanks to Jan Field of the Alresford Town Trust, and Eddie Rich of Richly Creative Web Design.

Membership Renewal Alresford Chamber of Commerce

Last month the Town Council in Alresford told me that their recent

survey of visitors to the town revealed 100% of those asked would not only come again but would recommend it to friends and family. I must say some surveys are easy to take with a pinch of salt but these findings were very easy to accept and it’s huge credit to the businesses in Alresford and local residents that this is how we are viewed by others. Long may it last for all our sakes.

Late July and throughout August (assuming it ever stops raining) will see my Summer Tour. The idea is simple; to take my surgery and my team into all four corners of my vast constituency and make myself even more accessible to the people I represent. Many of you of course, see me about in the Itchen Valley where I live – with Popcorn or at church – and I am always popping into Alresford with the kids for supplies large and small but it was great, as part of Summer Tour 2012, to hold my latest ‘street surgery’ on the morning of Saturday 21st July in the centre of Alresford itself. If you want to see full details of what Summer Tour is all about, please goto www.stevebrine.com/summertour. Recent weeks have seen the culmination of a major campaign for me and it was one which nobody wanted to call right up until the last moment. Shortly after my election I got involved in efforts to secure the future of paediatric cardiac surgery in Southampton as a result of a major review into the service across England. The Safe and Sustainable process was absolutely right in its aim – to ensure access to world-class care across our country – but it was deeply flawed that the centre in Southampton with such quality and reputation was not guaranteed to remain open. It took a lot of work, a debate in Parliament, meetings with the project team, with Ministers and intense lobbying on behalf of the

team at Southampton General but in the end we got the right result. I have a special website on the subject which contains the whole story at www.stevebrine.com/heartsurgery.

It has also been quite a time, nationally and locally, for our defence interests; something I stay very close to as the Winchester MP of course. The announcement in July known as ‘Army 2020’ was anxiously awaited as the Defence Secretary revealed where he would go next to tackle the £38bn black hole he inherited. 2020 is a detailed plan for a future Army with two distinct elements: Reaction Forces and Adaptable Forces but involved the withdrawal or merger of a number of units. I was pleased the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment was protected in the final shake up and hope they can look forward with confidence now. The other aspect I have been keeping close tabs on is the future of Worthy Down where ambitious future plans have just been announced that will secure the long-term future of the base. More detail on both via the usual channels.

Finally, it was lovely to see the relatively new Alresford Community Choir (it was only formed back in January) recently at St John’s Church. Under the Directorship of Keith Clark the choir now numbers 100 participants and it was a real treat to hear their concert in conjunction with the Hampshire County Youth Choir and a children's choir one Saturday evening last month. If you would like to get in touch on any issue or need my help, please don't hesitate to get in touch via [email protected] or call 01962 791110. As always, full details of my work on your behalf in Parliament and locally across Winchester via www.stevebrine.com. Steve Brine MP

Alresford Agricultural ShowA great day out

The 104th Alresford Agricultural Show will take place in 1st September 2012 in the magnificent surroundings of Tichborne Park, Hampshire.

Many shows claim to be ‘country’ shows, but very few can match the Alresford Show when it comes to being an authentic reflection of life in the Hampshire farming world. If you’ve always yearned to get close to a modern hi-tech £100,000 tractor, you’ll find plenty here – and plenty of people who own and drive one for a living. Eavesdrop on one of the many machinery stands and you might hear a show-day deal being done – depending, of course, on how this year’s harvest goes.

Perhaps vintage machinery is your thing – the sight of a Super Major or a B250 rekindles memories from your youth. Chances are that you’ll find one, polished and pampered to perfection, proudly parading in the main ring during the Vintage Machinery display.

The link between farming and horses goes back thousands of years, and equine affairs have always featured strongly at the Alresford Show; this year will be no exception. You’ll find heavy horses, Iberian horses, show hunters, classes for children and the Diamond Jubilee Fancy Dress. The range of other livestock you’ll find is just as large and varied, ranging from the traditional cattle, pigs and sheep, to bees, goats and alpacas. Come and meet their owners and ask a few questions – although you might need a long afternoon when the proud breeder starts to wax lyrical about his/her charges.

If you’re not careful you could also lose many hours in the peace and quiet of the horticultural tent among the fabulous displays of roses, dahlias and chrysanthemums. After all, you wouldn’t want to miss all the other activities that happen on the day. You can run with the beagles, climb the spider mountain, enjoy watching Alresford Rugby Club’s displays and tackle their bungee run. If you impress them enough, you might be offered a game!

If you enjoy a bit of retail therapy, you’ll be in heaven. Everything from greeting cards to combine

harvesters will be available. The organisers go to great lengths to ensure that trade stands and exhibitors match perfectly with the Show’s local countryside theme. The Craft Tent will be bursting with ceramics, lace making, jewellery and sculpture. And a visit to the Produce tent to sample Hampshire’s finest cheeses, cider, wines and cakes will leave you equally full.

So it’s a good thing tickets are such a bargain: £13 for adults, £9 for senior citizens – accompanied under 15s are free. All tickets are £1.50 cheaper if bought before 25th August. Buy online at www.alresfordshow.co.uk or by calling 01749 813899; from Morgan’s Hardware or County News in Alresford; SCATS in Winchester; the Petersfield Post in Petersfield and Bishops Waltham Post Office.

Summer Vegetableswith Haloumi Cheese

METHOD Set the oven 180C. On an oiled/buttered baking tray, lay out the mushrooms and

sprinkle with some of the herbs. Roast briefly until just soft; season with salt and

pepper. Repeat this process with each vegetable until all have been cooked. You can also use either round slices of aubergine or artichoke hearts. All slices should be about 3mm thick . Use a very sharp knife or a mandoline.

Use either a terrine or ramequins, or tea cups (no mug!), one per person. Butter or oil them. Layer the vegetables and then put in a layer of cheese slices, top off with further layers of vegetables. Make sure that you slice the haloumi cheese thinly. You can use feta cheese, but it’s not as good; you do need a very hard cheese, which does not melt easily. Pack carefully and cover with foil. Next put in a tray with water (Bain-marie) and cook for 30 minutes. When cooked and almost cold, press down gently to remove any excess liquid from inside your vegetable terrine.

Put in the fridge to cool.

DRESSING • 250ml yoghurt• Fresh finely chopped mint• Juice of 1 lemon• A touch of cumin or coriander• Salt and pepperPlace everything in a bowl, mix with a stick blender, taste, strain through a sieve. The dressing is now ready to serve with the terrine.

• 1 dessert spoon finely chopped garlic• 1 dessert spoon finely chopped rosemary (no stem) leaves only• 1 dessert spoon ground cumin or coriander seeds• 1 dessert spoon chopped fresh thyme • A cup of clarified butter or olive oil• Salt/pepper• 4 large black mushrooms sliced in three round discs each• 2 medium courgettes, sliced lengthwise, about 5/6 slices each. Do not use the first and last slices with the skin as they are the wrong shape• 1 tin of peeled red peppers (quick option) 4 peeled peppers needed• 3mm slices aubergine or artichoke hearts • Haloumi cheese thinly sliced

Most Alresford residents and businesses would have seen PCSO Steve

Hull over the past few years. Steve's contribution to the community has been second to none. Steve didn't just sort out problems, he also actively worked within the community and the youth of Alresford to improve community spirit. He created events and raised money for charity and will be missed by everyone. Steve has written some words for the Forum Magazine before he departs Alresford in August for his new position on the Isle of Wight.

last working day is Friday 24th August 2012. I have made this decision so that I can spend much needed time with my family on the Isle of Wight, and to cut down on my three hours plus journey each day which involves a drive down to two ferries, a train ride and then a walk home. This commute has taken its toll over the years. I have been working within Alresford for over two years keeping residents and business safe, and have made so many friends and acquaintances and have enjoyed working with a great team in Alresford. This will be a sad day for me and the residents and businesses around Alresford. Alresford will still be covered by P.C Paul McShea, and Pcso Siobhan Murray and other members of the team.

For anyone that would like to say goodbye on Friday 24th August I will be at Arlebury Park, Alresford from 19.00 for a drink and a disco/Karaoke. I would like to wish everyone in Alresford a fond farewell."

Festival goers dug deep at the ninth annual Watercress Festival

and raised over £2,000 for local children’s cancer charity, the Joe Glover Trust. The festival, held in Alresford, Hampshire, marked the start of the British watercress season with revellers invited to make a donation in exchange for a free bag of the peppery superfood.

The Watercress Alliance was proud to present Victoria Stevens, Executive Officer of the Joe Glover Trust with a cheque for £2,289. The Watercress Alliance, made up of watercress growers from Hampshire and Dorset, is a long term supporter of the charity and was thrilled to see the Trust receiving over double the amount raised at last year’s festival.

The Joe Glover Trust is a Hampshire based children’s cancer charity working with families and specialist children’s cancer units across Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire, East and West

the current provision of services and any future changes to those services. 2. To facilitate greater understanding and communication between practice staff and patients. 3. To empower patient views and ideas within the practice setting. 4. To act as a representative patient voice when local provision of health and social care are considered.

With the changes in the way that local services are commissioned it is vital that we seek the views and opinions of our patients. If you would like to come along to the meeting or if you have any comments or suggestions to make please either email [email protected] or telephone the surgery. Further information is available on our website.

Chairman of the Joe Glover Trust.

Charles Barter, of the Watercress Alliance, the main sponsor of the festival, said: “We believe that the Joe Glover Trust is a fantastic local charity and are always more than happy to help in any way we can. We can only hope that next year’s festival will raise as much.”Grown in flowing spring water and packed with 15 health giving vitamins and nutrients watercress not only supports the immune system but this top local crop also, gram for gram contains more vitamin C than oranges, more calcium than milk and more iron than spinach.

last year but the Department of Health are keen to further increase the number given to qualifying patients. We have noticed that take up in the Under 65s who have underlying health problems could be higher and we are encouraging these patients to attend. With this in mind we hope to run at least one evening session this year. Clinic dates and further information will be published in next month's editorial and on our website in due course.

Alresford Surgery Patient ForumThe next meeting of the Patient Forum is due to take place on Tuesday 11th September at 2pm. The group was launched in March 2010 with the following aims:

1. To enable effective consultation with patients on

Sussex, the Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands. It was formed in 2007 following the death of eight-year-old Joe Glover to Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and is currently run by parents who have firsthand experience of the effects of cancer within the family.

Victoria was touched by the festival goers generosity and said: “I’m thrilled to accept this cheque from the Watercress Alliance and extremely grateful to everyone who donated at the festival. The money will help families who have found themselves in financial difficulty while treating their child’s cancer and will also provide funds for a variety of projects that the charity runs throughout the year. For example, recently children and their families were taken to London to see the Lion King which was a fantastic experience and meant they could briefly escape the pressures of such a debilitating illness.” Victoria was joined in her thanks by Brian Park,

Patient ParticipationAs you may be aware the Alresford Surgery Forum meets approximately every 3-4 months. All registered patients are eligible to attend the meetings. However, we understand that it is not always easy to attend meetings during the day. We are therefore creating a 'virtual' patient group who will be contacted up to four times a year to complete short surveys about aspects of the services we provide. All surveys will be kept as brief as possible. If you would like to register as a member of our virtual patient group please go to our website and follow the link entitled 'Sign Up For Our Patient Group' on the right hand side of the home page.

Charitable Trust’s major award boost blood cancer appeal

Southampton Hospital Charity’s Red & White Appeal has been

boosted to the tune of £100,000 thanks to a generous grant from The Sir Jules Thorn Charitable Trust, founded in 1964 by industrialist Sir Jules Thorn with the aim of supporting numerous humanitarian causes and in particular medical research and treatment.

The grant brings Southampton Hospital Charity one step closer to completing the project to build a specialist blood cancer day unit, with just over £350,000 left to raise to make the project a reality. It is hoped that the remaining money can be raised this year, so that building work can begin this December.

The Red & White Appeal aims to raise £1.76million to create

Sporty mother and son, Lou and Jack Walker have taken the first

prizes in the Alresford Rotary 10K Run for the runners from the SO24 area. The top prize of a year’s gym membership at Evolution Health & Fitness, Alresford, was offered to the first male and female local runners to cross the line at the annual event held on Sunday 17 June.

Jack Walker, an A level student at Peter Symonds College and ex-Perins School pupil came in 18th place overall and his ironman triathlete mother finished 103rd. Jack was introduced to running 5 years ago at the first Fun Run and has gone on to become quite an athlete. Lou, who works as a sports massage therapist, has a string of marathons and ironman-distance triathlons to her name but still enjoys participating in the local events. Both are keen runners with Winchester & District Athletics Club.

Ironically for Evolution Health & Fitness, Lou is already a member at the gym, based at Perins School, but the generous prize has been very warmly received. “Jack and I are both chuffed to bits with this fantastic prize” commented Lou. “I’ve been a member at Evolution for a while and it’s the friendliest gym I’ve ever been to.”And as Jack is able to use the gym at Peter Symonds College during the college term he has agreed to share his prize with

Walkers Run Away with 10K Local Prizes

the second placed male SO24 runner, Mr Chris Nutt.

Worth £395 each, the prizes created a big draw for the race and significantly increased the number of local runners participating. Alresford Rotary President and 10K Run race organiser Jonathan Read added “The addition of the prizes for local runners from Evolution Health & Fitness was a great incentive for our competitors and I know the winners have been very excited to win such a great prize. We hope we can work with Evolution again next year and will look to extend the catchment area for the prize to draw more competitors from around the area.”

The full Alresford 10k Run race results can be found on the Alresford Rotary website www.alresfordrotary.co.uk and further details on Evolution Health & Fitness can be found at www.perinscommunity.co.uk/evolution.

ISSUE 69 AUGUST www.alresfordforum.co.uk

Alresford RotaryRead takes the lead

Even harder to track down than Higgs-boson is the logic behind why the Rotary Year ends on June 30th, but it does at least give the club an excuse to have an end-of-year party and

welcome Jonathan Read as President for 2012/13.

Jonathan was born in Eastleigh, grew up in Cheriton and attended Winchester College. A 20-year career in the Royal Navy as a submarine weapon engineer took Jonathan all over the world, although he didn't necessarily see very much whilst he was there. Surfacing in civvy street in 2004 he has since specialised in defence analysis

and experimentation, using modelling and simulation techniques to understand requirements for future defence systems. Jonathan is well-known locally as a member of New Alresford Town Council and chair of the Recreation committee. With his wife Clare he is a keen participant in 10k (and longer) road races and inaugurated the Alresford 10k five years ago, now a well-supported event in the town’s calendar.

Bob Germon, after many years service as Secretary is hanging up his quill and Jon Pittam has taken on this key role in the Club. Jon retired from his post as County Treasurer for Hampshire County Council in 2010 He was President of the Society of County Treasurers and the Association of Local Authority Treasurers' Society. An Alresford resident for 29 years, Jon and his wife, Mary have three children now living in Shropshire, Sydney and London. Jon’s claim to fame must surely be that he is the first club member to have an entry in Who’s Who!

Alresford Rotary club members have been a familiar sight at the Alresford Toy Train Fair for well over 10 years. The club provides a burger barbeque lunch which goes down very well with train fair exhibitors and visitors alike. Barbeque ‘master chef’ for 2012 was Rotarian John Barton who organised the event and led his team of 10 Rotarians on

the day. The Club regards its involvement as a community project supporting the successful train fair and providing an opportunity to meet people from near and far - it is also a modest fund raiser. John Barton said “this is a summer event which club members always enjoy, there’s a good atmosphere and also nothing better than char grilling local butcher John Sole’s excellent burgers. We get so many positive comments from our customers. It’s always nerve racking as we set up wondering what the weather will be like and whether we will be successful. Thankfully once again it all came good and we turned in a profit which has gone to help Cheriton School’s Outdoor Classroom Project.”

The school is an old Victorian building on a confined site in the centre of the village with no playing field. The only play space was until recently, a small tarmac area shared with the entrance to the school. That was the situation until developers, who are building houses on the former Freeman's Builders Yard that abuts the back of the school, gave a piece of land which has now been developed as a playground. The school is now converting the area at the front into what they term an 'outdoor classroom', focussed on a wooden gazebo and hurdle fencing which screens the entrance to a garden area with flowers and fruit bushes and incorporating a wildlife area for science. Outside the classroom, is an artificial grass area and a small wooden cycle store which is also fronted by hurdle fencing. Since the area is too small for formal gardening, the plan is to provide wooden planters for each class, where the children can sow their own seeds and grow and eat their own produce.

Lizzie Ayling, who is leading the fund-raising for the project estimates the total cost to be up to £20,000. To date, 'Friends of the School' have raised over £11,000 and are determined to complete the project – and Rotary is very pleased to be able to help.

Spinach in my teethThe Pagans went all out to celebrate the Jubilee, well

actually that’s not quite true. Having gleaned tickets, along with the immaculate in-laws and niece, to see Cold-Play and booked an overnight stay in leafy

Hampstead we discovered that the date happily coincided with the Thames River Pageant.

“We could go and have a quick look Sandra as it’s on our way back. It’ll be great for the kids”, was the extent of The Husband's Jubilee fever.

Mind you I didn’t think I was particularly Royalist, but none the less, found myself in our market town's ironmongery emporium purchasing meters of bunting and two flags, having come over all patriotic; must be something to do with my impending menopause.

I am more Republican than Royalist but come the revolution there are plenty more people I’d put before the wall rather than the Monarchy, but that’s another story.

So The Husband arrived home to find the back garden and trampoline bedecked with bunting.

“Crikey Sandra, are you alright love? The two flags out the front have crossed over in the wind – makes us look like the head quarters of the BNP, what’s going on?”

“Mum’s gone mad!” Was the response from Star II.

And so it was, with the Jubilee weekend upon us, we eventually found our way out of the over crowded Underground and up into the manic excitement of the Embankment. We were obviously a tad late, if we had wanted to see the river we should have ditched Cold-Play and camped out by Old Father Thames overnight.

So in the time honoured British tradition we queued thirty minutes for our Latte and hot chocolate while watching the Coronation on the big screens, without so much as a glimpse of the river. There was the occasional fanfare rehearsal, which prompted cheers from beneath a sea of umbrellas; I guess you had to be there…

Another thirty minutes to get across Waterloo Bridge and the delights of an equally crowded South Bank lay before us - burgers, baguettes and beer. According to the program Her Majesty was not due to pass by (unseen by us), for another hour. There were rumblings in the ranks; sensing imminent mutiny, the brother in law generously produced two pints of Pimms to soothe troubled waters.

In short the weather came blowing in cold and wet, even The Husband became petulant, “Not much point in hanging around here Sandra love, can we just go.”

So we watched the Pageant live on the niece's i-Phone homeward bound on the train; it was the closest we were to get to any Royals and celebrities, or so I thought…

The end of the celebratory week culminated in the Alresford Music Festival, the sun shone (!) and the music and new venue were better than ever. Mid afternoon a friend pointed out a rather handsome man in the crowd, turns out he was the saxophonist in a famous eighties band.

“Well I never”.Then I made a fatal mistake, I told The Husband who was having none of it.“No, Sandra, that’s not him, no way”.After ten minutes of arguing the point I was bored, “Go and ask him then!”

So, fuelled by copious pints, he did. I watched in horror as he manoeuvred his way closer and closer to said star and finally started chatting away. The next time I looked The Husband was dragging the unfortunate celeb over to me.“This is Sandra, she’s a huge fan”

Oh God. The poor man had obviously been through this ordeal many times before, but he was a gent. A kiss on each cheek was enough to send me crimson and I started waffling on about how lovely life in the country was, asking how long had he lived here. Whilst thinking ‘shut up!!’

I mentioned how young the band playing were, he said they were ‘tight’, I nodded sagely as if I knew what he meant, it was all going rather well until The Husband said,“Actually I preferred Japan to you guys really”.Handsome celeb took it well but I panicked, desperate to pay him a compliment I blurted out,“I must be much older than you. Have you had any work done you look amazing?”

Turns out he was a little older than me and no his good looks were all his own, and then with a kiss on the hand he was off and who could blame him.“Well he was a nice bloke wasn’t he? Oh Sandra love did you know you’ve got some spinach in your teeth?”

Marvellous.Sandra Pagan.

Issue 67 - Page 42Access All Areas – A Reply

Thank you, GG for your stimulating article. There is, perhaps, a hint of stereotypical thinking in your language where you refer to people “confined to a wheelchair”. Those of us who are “wheelchair users” and aim to enjoy a full and meaningful life are frequently annoyed by negative thinking and obtuse attitudes to disability.

Can I give you a few examples:

• We don’t have disabled access to this shop as we sell high quality, expensive items.

• We would like to put a ramp here but we can’t cover up the step which is listed. (Ever thought about a temporary ramp?)

• We offer an ‘at door service’ for people who can’t get into our shop. (Would you be happy to accept a limited choice from somebody else and waiting at the door, especially if it’s raining?).

• We welcome disabled diners but do not have any suitable bathroom facilities. (Giving with one hand and taking away with the other?).

On the other hand I have been impressed by the attitude and creativity of others in addressing the needs of disabled people.

You raise, for example, the issue of listed buildings. Sorry if disabled people make the place look untidy but we like to enjoy the facilities of an interesting town just like anyone else. In this context can I mention the work of the National Trust who have made considerable efforts in managing access to their historic properties. They embody an eminently sensible attitude where they say they are “committed to developing and promoting inclusive access solutions at our properties that are creative and sensitive to

Your Feedbackthe surroundings.” Their work negates the suggestion you make that “nothing ... should be done to alter them [listed buildings].”

As another example of a committed approach to understanding the needs of disabled people can I quote the example of the efforts of a local authority and a local business to address an access issue.

I was asked to attend a business meeting and had to travel from the disabled parking area to the venue. This turned out to be an impossible task as there were no ‘drop kerbs’ on my route. With the help of passers by I was lifted out of and then back into my chair to get off and on pavements. After this experience both the management of the venue and I contacted the local authority.

I was extremely impressed by their response. The local authority officer involved immediately commissioned a survey of the area to determine a safe route. The surveyor produced a ‘drop kerb’ plan and emailed it through for my comments. The work was commissioned and in the space of two weeks I had an accessible route for my next meeting. I ought to add that the situation was exacerbated by local businesses who were in the habit of putting free- standing advertising displays on the pavement which effectively made them impassable. The local authority ‘had a word’ and these were removed.

This I think makes the point that with genuine commitment and expertise that the ‘lowered areas’ you mention in your article can be positioned safely and effectively. I ought to point out that the local authority was in the Midlands.

This brings me on to the central issue of your piece which concerns access issues in the local area. You are quite right that new builds conform to

‘no-step access’ requirements (look at the design of the Olympic park and you will see the level of detail that has been applied to produce an inclusive venue.) Public buildings have also taken on the challenge of adequate access. Compare this to Alresford. Do two basic things: count the steps and the make a note of the shops and businesses who have made an effort to get over the problem and, of course, those who haven’t. Some have installed discreet ramps. For the others who can only think of permanent structures there is the option of temporary ramps (you can get them in fibre glass and aluminium so they aren’t heavy or awkward). Others have a bell to summon assistance. In Alresford there are businesses that have designated a disabled route to another part of the building where level access is available, including NatWest and the Alresford Pharmacy.

All this goes to show that with sensitivity, creativity and an awareness of the needs of disabled people problems can be overcome. Some creative solutions have included: rearranging shop displays to accommodate wheelchairs and providing a wheelchair for those who have the mobility to transfer from a scooter so that they can navigate narrow aisles; adapting bathrooms so they can be used by disabled and able bodied people alike and offering an internet ordering and delivery service as an alternative to face to face shopping.

Your article ends with, “What do you think?” One of the conclusions I have reached and exemplified in my illustration, above, is that unless people raise the issue it remains invisible. So what do people who are disabled think? Are there examples of good access practice that could be shared? Perhaps the pages of this publication could continue the debate?

The first of two collaborative evenings of singing and music at

St John's Church in Alresford proved a huge success on Saturday 23rd June in front of a sell-out audience, with the combined talents of three Hampshire Choirs coming together to form a kaleidoscopic musical programme.

Hampshire County Children's Choir, under the expert guidance of Lissa Gray, performed three beautifully-sung pieces, including Goodall’s 'The Lord Is My Shepherd.'

With an eclectic mixture of traditional, Hungarian folk and Caribbean songs, Hampshire County Youth Choir followed onto the stage, demonstrating their considerable vocal talents.

Beatles songs and other well-known pieces were the choice of

Hampshire choirs perform at sell-out concerts

the newly-established Alresford Community Choir, formed less than six months ago. Under the leadership and musical passion of Musical Director Keith Clark, the choir now have over 100 members who come together to rehearse every Monday evening. The audience were also treated to Alexander L'Estrange's 'Zimbe!', which formed a rousing finale after the interval. Here, the three choirs performed alongside with a five piece professional jazz band, 'Call Me Al', raising the roof with a stunning arrangement of African songs and rhythms.

“It's been a fantastic evening”, Jane Marsden commented. “The concert has been hugely popular and we feel privileged to have got tickets as we wouldn't have missed this musical treat for anything!”

The choir are extremely grateful for the tremendous backing of their main sponsor, First Option Limited as well as their other supporters, Alresford Dental Care, Co-op, County News, Exclusive Windows, Footprint Communications, Home Instead, Keats Estate Agents, Maddie Attenborough Photography, Naked Grape, Prospect Signs, and The Blooming Workshop.

Mucking out is one of the messiest and smelliest jobs at a wildlife

hospital and the arrival of dozens of baby hedgehogs over the past few weeks means carers are being swept off their feet.

“It’s just been too wet for the adults – there’s a lot of sickly ones around – they’re just not strong enough to care for their young and we have been inundated with orphans,” said Kristy Willis, wildlife clinical assistant, one of only three staff

“Some of these little guys might not make it – they were probably only born last night and are very cold. We’re warming them up on a heat mat and have already started trying to feed and treat them. My friends don’t understand how I can take animals home and feed them through the night – but it’s normal for us here," said Kristy.

The young hedgehogs are fed a puppy formula for the first few weeks and are then moved on to rusks and later cat food.

“The hoglets don’t open their eyes for 14 days and are only able to curl up in a ball once they are 10 days old. This is the worst age for them to arrive with us as they need feeding very regularly but curl up each time we try. Once they’ve been brought back to health and are clear of infections we often put them together with other non-siblings in groups. But it has been a struggle to find room for them all and without the help of

Wildlife carers swept off their feet

at HART Wildlife Rescue.

“Hedgehogs like it to be damp so they can forage for slugs but it’s just too sodden for them to find food – some of their nests are getting flooded too. They like to nest in messy gardens and their babies are often discovered when people tidy up. It’s quite fitting that they like playing with a brush so much,” she added. Eight hoglets were brought to the centre at Medstead, near Alton, in one day last week.

our volunteers we wouldn’t be able to manage to clean out all the cages, feed and medicate them.

“If people find baby hogs they shouldn’t touch them unless they are completely sure the parents are not returning and please don’t feed them bread and milk – it’s an old wives’ tale. Bread is too bloating and they’re lactose intolerant so cow’s milk is bad for them.”

Perhaps mistaking the brush for their mum these three, orphaned hoglets take comfort in a clean dustpan while their cages are cleaned out.

Little Pink Pills

The Dean Ark bobs on an ocean of blue flax and the Doves return to the

cote with no message of dry land. I have always been an advocate of a swift sharp hoe when executed mercilessly in experienced hands, but the clotted porridge that currently passes for a growing medium renders it all but useless. We are reduced to crawling through wet borders hand weeding and hauling convolvulus hawsers from the very tops of the borders making this year a weedfest . Visitors are very complimentary, but our numbers are down on last year, in some cases halved, and I rather assume that at the end of the year, after all the checks and balances are applied, we will not be alone in this. Botrytis browns rose blooms before they have opened and the fried eggs flowers of Romneya coulteri fold like omelettes. Finding a dry day to apply lawn weedkiller so that three clear days can pass before cutting, usually means waiting for a dry Monday, these have been few and far between. The hormonal weedkiller mimics a natural

auxin plant growth hormone causing the broadleaved weeds in the lawn to overgrown and die. At the right dilution, the grass will be unaffected and best results are achieved by allowing at least three days for chemical absorption and action. Trees, Shrubs, newly introduced fruit trees and in particular a Mulberry (Morus nigra) planted in the last few drier years, are flourishing in the cool wet conditions, and growth on all hedges is rampant which gives me the opportunity to try out a recently acquired electric hedge trimmer that operates from a battery (lasting five hours per charge) strapped to my back. The cutter weighs next to nothing and there are no leads, fumes or noise to interfere with health or welfare; of course, I am hoping to better alleviate what used to be called ' Lumbago’…. the Professional Gardeners' companion, because in the early 21st century, amongst the vital tools of all modern gardeners we now list : Secateurs check, Knife check, Saw check, Computer check, Voltarol check.Julian Blackwell - Head Gardener at Dean House Kilmeston www.deanhousegardens.co.uk

ISSUE 69 AUGUST www.alresfordforum.co.uk

A new feature of the inheritance tax rules introduced from April

this year allows individuals who make bequests to registered charities to significantly reduce the inheritance tax (IHT) then due on the remainder of their estate. By donating 10% or more of the taxable estate value to charity, the Government reduces the tax rate levied on the remainder of the estate from the normal 40%, to a lower rate of 36%.

In this way the Government is encouraging charitable donations, presumably part of the “Big Society”. This boost for charities has been welcomed by the New Alresford Town Trust, one of the major charities in Alresford providing care and support to the Community.

Robin Atkins, Chairman of the NATT, has gone one step further, by immediately changing his own will to leave a bequest of 10% of his chargeable estate to the NATT, to be used in their

New Emergency Funding For Deserving CasesNATT has supported 3 such cases in the first half of 2012 and donated £650.in total towards them. Both the Rotary and Pigs have matched this amount, so nearly £2000 of support was provided by these 3 Alresford Charities in total. NATT invite public donations to this Fund which will be set aside for future help, so more support can be targeted in this area. Please contact Robin Atkins or Pam Stevens.

The AvenueResponsibility of Trustee Roy Gentry. Detailed professional report has been produced for the North side of the Avenue, and NATT is in the middle of a planning process with WCC Tree Officer for work needed on these Trees. A similar report on the South side of the Avenue is

bill that needs to be paid “up front” in cash, before Probate is granted, is reduced by £7,600!Repeating history

Pam Stevens, Secretary to the NATT, reminds us that gifts and bequests have historically played a major part in the development of the Trust’s activities. “In 1881, Mrs Susanna Eliza Covey, a local benefactor, presented the land for the Old Fire Station to the Bailiff and Burgesses of New Alresford, for a building to house the Fire Engine. In 1890, with the formation of the NATT, the building was one of their first assets recorded” said Pam. “More recently, Arthur Stowell left a fund equivalent to the profits and royalties from his book ‘The Story of Alresford’, to be used to support and promote educational activities in the Community, which is being administered by the NATT.” Around half a dozen grants have been made by NATT to several of the local schools, from this fund. Similarly a Charity started by Roy Robins in 2006, to create a Museum in Alresford, had assets of £10,000 after his death in 2007: this project has now become another aspect of the current NATT activities.

from Residential Care Homes in the area for taking the residents out on trips. The bus has now had a new clutch fitted and is undergoing repairs to the bumper and bodywork after its first insurance claim for over 7 years.

MarketsResponsibility of Trustee Pam Stevens. The weather has seriously affected the level of NATT income from Market tolls.

Eel HouseResponsibility of David Woods, Chair and Trustee Margot Power for the 8 Open Days planned for 2012. NATT is discussing the implementation of audio/visual aids for visitors and the decision should enable a better presentation in 2013, when it is also hoped that the new sluices will be approved by the Environmental Agency and then installed. There are 3 Open Days left in the 2012 season, namely, 27th August and 8th/9th September.

Inheritance tax loophole gives charities a bonus

support of Alresford residents. Robin Atkins commented: “Both my children are fully supportive of this action, and understand all the financial implications for them – which are not significant, but they are willing to accept the resulting small reduction because the charity benefits by a significantly greater sum”.

How it worksOn an estate of say £425,000, which is £100,000 above the single person’s ‘Nil rate’ tax threshold, the Government normally takes £40,000 in tax. By making a bequest of 10% to a charity like NATT, who would receive £10,000 free of tax, the reduced tax rate of the 36% now applicable to the remaining £90,000 in the estate means a tax payment of £32.400. The total estate value passed to the beneficiaries after tax is then £57,600 – but an additional £10,000 will also be a significant benefit to the chosen charity. An additional benefit to the beneficiaries is that the IHT

being produced for end of July.Ten residents have volunteered to form a Working Party and help to carry out work on The Avenue. Some of the work needed on the South side will be suggested as their initial tasks.

MinibusResponsibility of Trustee Pam Stevens. The Special Appeal fund has attracted £5,700, and the revised target for 2012 is £7,000. (was £6K). NATT has two new business partners - Andrew Smith & Son Auctions and Richard Steel Funeral Directors, who have agreed to contribute £1,000 each over 4 years 2012-15 in exchange for having their logo put on the bus. The number of passengers using the bus is increasing, especially since the changes in the local bus routes by Stagecoach. We have also received enquiries

Peter Middleton, Treasurer for the NATT, reminds us that the NATT Community activities are funded by an income of around £30,000 a year, raised by continued requests and submissions to local councils and charities, plus the fares collected on the Minibus and from market stalls. Regular donations are made by some local benefactors and businesses, such as Richard Steel (Winchester) and Andrew Smith (Auctioneers), and these are welcomed, particularly when gift-aided. But donations and bequests are currently exceptional events, rather than the norm: up until 1996 the NATT made grants of emergency funds from these benefactor’s funds, to the needy in Alresford. Peter advises: “Recently these charitable grants have been restarted, at up to £250 each, but the demands for such funds are more than was expected - and at the moment cannot be sustained. We at NATT would like to resurrect this original spirit of charitable donations to the Community, and welcome the Government’s approach to encouraging this new funding method.”

Alresford MuseumResponsibility of Trustee Roy Gentry. This committee are trying to find a suitable place to house and present the Town’s artefacts and documents. The concept of a “virtual” Museum (i.e. web-based or audio-visual) is a matter under discussion.

FinanceResponsibility of Trustee Peter Middleton. These are up to date and monies not required for immediate use are invested in Fixed Rate Bonds. NATT currently earns nearly 4%(£4,500 per annum) on these investments.
