Te Forum Magazine has grown a great deal over the years and now offers it readers a wealth of

news, events and articles every month. The magazine is still delivered free even though it now costs us in excess of £1 per copy to create and distribute. We hope that our readers enjoy the magazine and carry on sending us interesting news so that we can make the magazine even more informative.

Remember you can always speak to us and let us have your thoughts, be it on the magazine itself or the content of an article. The Forum is for the community and the community needs a voice, so our letters page will give you the freedom to speak.

of our sin (Ephesians 2v1).

We need to be alive-alive. Yes, alive physically, and alive to God, spiritually (Romans 6v11). This new life can only come through faith in Jesus Christ, who gave His life up to death on the Cross because of our sins, and was raised again, so that we might have life - everlasting life!

This is the message of Easter: the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ

We are physically alive right now, otherwise we could not read this; but are you 'alive to God'?

Now, it's when we have God's life, eternal life, that we know we are really living!God bless you this Easter.

I arrived late in the evening and everywhere was quiet and in complete darkness. With the car parked facing the barn door and the headlights on full beam, it was easy to locate the padlock and let myself in, but could I find the interior light switch? Nowhere to be found!

Using the small amount of light coming through the door, I made my way to an area closed off with polythene sheets. I pulled the sheets aside to reveal the first of four statues; I did a double take, as there in the half light, they had the appearance of being alive, even though they were made of clay with an iron structure.

The Bible says, in Genesis chapter 2v7, that you and I are made of clay, or 'the dust of the ground'. The difference of course, between those sculptures and us, is that we are alive.

'God breathed into man and he became a living soul'. Remarkably, the Bible goes on to tell us, that even though we are alive physically, we can be dead spiritually, because

Call now and find out why our award-winning service is probably the most requested carpet cleaning in the local area. The next thing for you to do is call us on 01962 690 005 - we'll welcome your call, answer your questions and take care of everything for you.

Tel: 01962 690 005FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: Here's a selection of frequently asked questions, especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say 'carpet' what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don't quibble if the area is a little larger - it's all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don't price into the job at these discount prices is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen TVs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitably we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any 'hidden extra costs' The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.

Arts, Crafts & Music

The 2012 Alresford Music Festival will be held at a new venue this year, thanks

to New Alresford Town Council backing. Still conveniently located centrally in the town, the festival will be held at Alrebury Park on 9 June. It'll be the third year the festival has run and our new venue will allow us more flexibility with the format of the event. Alresford based IT solutions company First Option are fully funding the 2012 event, which enables all the proceeds from the tickets sales to be donated to charity. This magnificent gesture is great

‘Daydream’ gets the go ahead for 2012!

news for the event itself and for Alresford, as the core ethos behind the festival can now be realised and local charities will now see the full benefit of all ticket sales.

THREE STAGES OF LIVE MUSICThis year’s festival will increase in size to host three stages, two of which will be under cover to counter any potential weather issues, and festival favourites 'Hattie Jacques’ Playlist' will headline the main stage. This year the “Hatties” will add full

orchestral support to their legendary horn section. The three stages will showcase an eclectic mix of music, the skilful and original blending of which is a festival trademark.

The music festival will also be supported by circus acts, a large big top beer tent and many additional food stalls catering for all tastes and appetites. The reputation of the Alresford Music

Festival as a great family day out will continue in 2012 with much more children's entertainment to enjoy, with lots on offer to encourage kids to have-a-go.

Early bird tickets from £10 - on sale now! On sale through the festival website http://www.alresfordmusicfestival.com

A Fond Farewell to Pauline & Richard

We are having a goodbye `get together` on Saturday 17th March in the evening for friends and acquaintances to join us for one more evening of music and dancing! We will be open lunchtime on Sunday 18th for drinks, but no food will be available.

Once again, thank you to everyone, we will probably see a lot of you around, especially those we regularly bump into at the doctors surgery or the hospital!" Love Pauline & Richard

Below are a few farewell words from Pauline and Richard from the Cricketers

pub in Alresford. Everyone at the Forum wishes them the very best for the future.

"We would like to say a big thank you to all our customers, past and present who have continued to support us over the years, all will be missed, we have enjoyed every minute of our time at the Cricketers, the dogs will wonder where all the people have gone! they are so used to staff or customers being around.

What do you think?

Has that ever been said to you? Or worse still has it not actually been said but implied, the disappointed look, the deep sigh, the unexplained silence.

We seem obsessed with failure, much like the Victorians who celebrated death with reverential purity but hid their sexual culture; we seem to be averse to celebrating our achievements and those of others. Once considered a failure it becomes the preface for all the successes that follow.

The tabloids feed on the ‘build them up and knock them down’ mentality. Oscars, business prowess or sporting ability they may have but we thrive on the addictions, relationship breakdowns and flops of celebrities.

Failure in all its guises fuels the popular press but what does failure mean in the real world?

Uncomfortable though it may make us feel, do we not need to acknowledge that we have all, at some point, failed?

Failure is a human condition that occurs periodically, the psychological triggers for it are complex. Is it the very fear of failure that makes you, well, fail? What is that driven by? Parental disappointment about your school

report, a teacher who said you would never amount to anything, failing your driving test? A desperate desire to get it right? The list is personal and infinite.

Children as young as seven can be labelled ‘failing children’ by their schools, they simply don’t adhere to the statistical norm and whilst dedicated teachers give them extra time in which to achieve there are a few who don’t, for them the label of ‘failed’ is stuck fast.

Sadly there are those who never recover from the blight of failure, for a myriad of reasons, but for those that do it is with the recognition that failure is in fact eminently recyclable.

Turning a potentially harmful waste product into something real and sustainable is one of life’s greatest lessons. Can you really give an example of anyone who hasn’t failed at some point on his or her personal life journey?

Failure should be seen as a beginning not an end; it’s what we choose to do with our failures that will stand the test of time.

What do you think?Gill Grant

YOU FAILED!

SureStart Centre NewsSunbeams Children’s Centre will continue to do their best to maintain services through the forthcoming transition period. We are currently planning our summer programme and will inform you of the details when this is agreed with the new provider in March.

Although an unsettling time (not least for the staff!), we and the Children’s Centres Team of Hampshire County Council are determined to maintain ‘service as normal’ for all our families. Please let me know if you have any concerns as we approach the announcement of the new providers in March.

Yours sincerelyJackie HarrisonChildren’s Centre Leader

You will be aware that Hampshire County Council, in looking

to secure the future for children’s centres, has put the management of cluster groups of children’s centres out to tender. The process for selecting organisations to run these cluster groups is now underway and there has been an excellent response from a range of potential providers, including local and national voluntary organisations and schools. The deadline for tenders has passed and the bids are now being evaluated. Contracts will be awarded in March, with the new providers taking over from the end of April.

The new providers will be expected to continue to deliver services which meet the needs of our local community, particularly our more vulnerable families, and all the staff at

parents who work,” commented Patchwork parent Kate Walton. “The POP Group gives us the chance to get together at other times and to be fully involved in our children’s education.”

The POP Group will also be involved in fundraising for Patchwork with current projects aimed at redesigning the nursery garden for the 6 months - 3 year age groups, to mirror the pre-school garden which was built in 2011, and to help buy a play house for the pre-school garden.

“The pre-school garden is superb” added Mrs Walton. “It’s designed to create a natural environment including sustainable wood play equipment, a picnic table and chairs, and a herb garden and trees for the children to take care

A new parents’ group, The POP Group, has started up at Patchwork Day Nursery

& Pre-School, in Alresford, and is launching their organisation with a fundraising Nearly New Sale at Perins School on 4th March.

The POP Group (Parents of Patchwork) has been set up by the parents and members of staff at Patchwork to improve communication between staff and parents. The group aims to give busy parents more time to meet and get to know the Patchwork staff and other parents outside the morning and evening rush of dropping off and collecting their children.

Once this has been completed we will give consideration to a Neighbourhood Plan but we will at least have something that provides some guidance on what local residents want for their town.

SPEED LIMIT REMINDER Following input from local people we have reviewed the locations for the speed limit signs which have now been operating for nearly three years. As a result we are asking the Highway Authority to confirm the following new locations: • Junction of New Farm Road/Jesty Road• Junction near Sun Lane/ Nursery Road• Two additional sites in Jacklyns Lane

WEST STREETPlans have at last been finalised for the improvement of both sides of West Street and the Jacklyns Lane junction. The proposals are currently being discussed with Hampshire County Council and Winchester City Council and once we have their input they will be put on public display for comment. We do not believe we will be able to implement these proposals all at once but the idea is that once we have agreement on the plans they can be implemented as funding becomes available, or planned maintenance is carried out, but any work will be done in accordance with the agreed plan.

TOWN PLAN & THE LOCALISM BILLThe Localism Bill that came into being last year requires Planning Authorities to give much more consideration to local plans when considering planning applications and making strategic decisions.

As outlined in the bill, an approved Neighbourhood Plan has legal standing within the planning process but is very time consuming and expensive to produce. Notwithstanding this, the planning authority has to take account of local plans and indeed they have written such a provision into the Core Strategy of the Local Development Framework.

As a first step we are intending to produce a revised

Wiltshire. As a result there will be a national campaign to reduce waste including features in the ‘Hampshire Now’ publication that is sent to all households.

We would like to ask patients to read this feature. We are aware that some patients over-order their repeat prescriptions and must ask that stockpiling of medicines is avoided as this can lead to considerable wastage.

SAMPLESWe have become aware of an increasing number of patients delivering urine and other samples in non-standard containers, often without the doctor or nurse asking for them. This has led to a number of problems and difficulties for our patients.

We must ask that samples are only provided in containers supplied by ourselves, that they are properly labelled and if we have not asked for them an explanation in writing of why they are being handed in. We hope you will understand the motives behind this policy.

Community Centre and a monthly social gathering each second Monday afternoon with excellent speakers on a wide range of subjects. This year there are talks on Air Traffic Control, Playing In An Orchestra and Life of a Dentist to name just a few. We are a friendly and welcoming group and enjoy a good laugh.

We do need some help though. If anyone could spare a little time to help with the meetings and some of the organisation they would be made most welcome.

PATIENT FORUMThe Patient Forum met on 17th January. As a result of the patient survey carried out in December and early January there were several action points agreed: • We will regularly publish information about which days the doctors work (this information is also available on our website) • We will investigate further the possibility of introducing online appointment booking and text message appointment reminders. • We will write to the necessary organisations to highlight the fact that our patients are being greatly inconvenienced by the lack of blood test appointments available at the surgery and to request a review of the service provided. We are very grateful to everyone who completed the patient survey, the results of which are valuable to us in reviewing the services we provide.

MEDICINE WASTAGEBased on national research it has been estimated that £20 million of medicines are wasted across Hampshire, Dorset and

The group was set up 18 years ago to provide information, friendship

and support for those with physical disabilities and those who do the caring.

Over the years we have been involved in the towns affairs and were involved with improving access to shops and pubs, the provision of dropped kerbs, disabled toilet facilities, the Millennium Trail, re-location of the bus stop and the bridge improvements in Jacklyn's Lane and much, much more.

Quakers and others use the Meeting House for much of the week, and appreciate the calm of the House and the beautiful garden.

The Quakers in Winchester are hosting Quaker Quest - a series of talks and discussions - on Thursday mornings at the Quaker Meeting House, Winchester, in April and May 2012. We invite you to explore with us a spiritual path that is simple, radical, contemporary and empowering. Each event will consist of short talks from personal experience, with plenty of time for questions and discussion. There will be a crèche, and one activity each week for any pre-school children to participate in with their parent or carer. To close there will be a period of silent worship in the manner of Quakers. All are welcome; there is no charge for admission.

The Quakers were founded as a radical Christian movement in the

seventeenth century. We have no formal creed, but we do have core beliefs: that there is 'that of God' in everyone, and that everyone can know Truth in their hearts, without other human or organisational direction. Quakers are members of the 'Religious Society of Friends'. Many regard themselves as Christians, but nowadays some draw on their religious experiences from other sources, such as Buddhism.

Quakers have always been in the forefront of social change towards a more just and equal society; for example, they were prominent in the struggles for the abolition of slavery, and for women's rights. Quakers helped to form Amnesty International, OXFAM, and Greenpeace. We are strongly opposed to war and, at international level, Quakers often play an important role in bringing reconciliation in conflict situations.

Quakers have no ministers to lead services - instead, a 'Meeting for Worship' is mostly spent sitting in silence, waiting for guidance. Anybody may speak if feeling prompted to do so. This simple practice can be surprisingly powerful and beneficial.

There have been Quakers in East Hampshire since the beginning of the movement but there was no Meeting House in Winchester until we bought the former rectory of St Lawrence in Colebrook Street in 1973.

Southampton Hospital Charity’s Red & White Appeal Day is three weeks away. Among those supporting the day on Friday 9th March will be 36-year old Yvonne Lo, one of the ward sisters on the 22-bed bone marrow transplant and leukaemia unit at Southampton General Hospital.

Working closely with patients who are receiving intensive treatment for life threatening blood cancers, Yvonne knows first hand the importance of the charity’s £1.76million campaign to improve facilities.

Following successful treatment with the team on the inpatient unit, patients have to make regular follow up visits back to the hospital to receive top up doses of treatment and for blood tests to ensure that they are recovering well, but there is currently no dedicated area for this. hampshire mum

Ah the draw of potential bargains! Didn’t really need anything and yet the family Pagan, and chum of Star I, still found ourselves in the largest palace of consumptive delights in the shopping centre of local

Solent Port city.

Star I and chum obviously needed to cut loose immediately rather than run the risk of actually being seen with us in broad daylight!

Nothing for it, for the sake of a peaceful stress free excursion, but for The Husband and I to give in to the demands of Star II and head directly to the penultimate floor where the toy department is.

Happily for The Husband the men’s’ department is adjacent,“I’ll just have a quick look Sandra love, you’re ok aren’t you?”Indeed I was, happy as Larry spending an eternity gazing at Lego, Hex Bugs and cars of every variety before opting out and offering the ultimate bribe of tea and buns on the floor above.

Post caffeine fix, for us not Star II – the thought of giving any kind of stimulant is the stuff of nightmares- we decamp, at the bequest of Star II, to the kitchen department three floors below.

As we descend I get a tantalizing glimpse of the women’s department…still just think of the money I saved. Now Star II is a bit of a chef on the quiet excelling in cakes but is strangely drawn to very large knives.

A happy hour or so was spent caressing various coffee machines, food processors and heavy iron pans, well a girl can dream, while Star II begged me for a spatula and a piping bag with nozzles various.

The Husband had that ‘let’s get out of here’ look on his face and Star II, with purchases in hand, had uttered those immortal words.“Mum can we go now.”It was time then to gather the troops.

Now teenagers, being what they are, I knew I would have to arrange to meet Star I and chum by a very obvious landmark. “Meet me by the large tropical fish tank in the cosmetics department- two minutes, ok?”

The rather beautiful fish tank and its equally exotic inhabitants is the trademark of a luxurious skin care range that apparently contains an amazing ingredient derived from contingents of the ocean. Star II knew nothing of this but rather was simply enraptured by the tropical fish.“Look at these Mum, look at this blue one. LOOK!”

Being a sensitive soul, Star II was only looking, not banging on

the glass or smearing it with sticky hands, nor climbing over the counter top or sitting on the stools, no, just merely looking. There were no customers waiting to be served in fact the whole area was deserted ……until.

Suddenly, as if from nowhere, there she was. A tall lady in a white consultant’s coat; applied immaculately to her face were probably most of the products available, beautiful she may have looked, happy she certainly was not.

“This is a consultation area!” She barked and proceeded to wipe down surfaces and straighten stools.Star II was oblivious, “MUM…look at this one PLEESE”.

I noted that this season’s lip colour still softened even when one’s jaw was clenched and eyes that flashed with rage could still retain a degree of femininity dependent on where one placed the highlighter; this product was obviously marvellous! As she grew more tense I phoned Star I and chum again,“Where are you, hurry up!”

Then, and it was slightly unfortunate I will admit, my tigress gene kicked in. Actually why was she so very angry? Was looking at fish a punishable offense? Star II was not causing a problem to anyone, particularly due to the fact that at that point, there was not a client to be seen.

And so as I phoned Star I again, the words “Move away from the tank please the nasty lady doesn’t like it”, tumbled from my mouth. Not good; I retracted my claws and a confused Star II came obediently to my side.“What have I done Mum?”“Nothing my love, the lady doesn’t like you near the fish”

With a swish of her white coat, the lady vanished. As I texted frenetically to Star I a shadow fell over me. Slowly turning to my left it became apparent I was not alone.

There, in what was left of my personal space, was a security guard of Goliathan proportions. He gave me no eye contact but rather mumbled something into his headset: “Target apprehended” I imagined. I was beyond cross, clearly she had called Security! Fortunately The Husband arrived, smiled weakly at my new found, up close and personal companion, and enquired,“Who’s your friend?”Not helpful. With the arrival of Star I and chum we beat a hasty retreat.

Perfect Pagan day out: Star I had a burger, Star II got a spatula, The Husband got to ogle wide screen TVs and I’m booked on an Anger Management course.

An unusual family recipe that was invented by my mother who loved to cook and inspired me to love cookery. When left with the dilemma of what to do with left over roast turkey and chicken she created this filling comforting meal - The Editor

METHOD Rinse the basmati rice and add to a pan with enough water to boil. Into the water add a good quality chicken stock then bring to the boil. When the rise is cooked through strain it and set aside.

Whilst the rice is cooking get a suitable large flat bottomed baking dish and add the chicken, peanuts, chilli (if desired), raisins or sultanas and garlic. Raisins work better in this meal, but sultanas will suffice. Next, season the ingredients in the dish with ground black pepper and a pinch of ground nutmeg and one or two tablespoons of Worcestershire Sauce; no imitation versions of this sauce should be used as the results are not the same. Once suitably seasoned take the rice and pour over your ingredients, stir all of the ingredients together and then level them in the dish. Next grate a healthy layer of cheddar cheese over the ingredients; cheddar should be used as it helps create a thick crust holding the ingredients together when served. Also add Parmesan to the top to add a nutty taste to the topping. Place in a hot oven, 180C, for twenty minutes or until the cheese has melted and is golden brown. For lovers of Worcestershire Sauce drizzle the top of your served portions for that added spicy hit.

You can also serve the meal with a light side salad. A favourite side salad of mine consists of: Rocket, Pine Nuts, Parmesan flakes, and reduced balsamic vinegar; it has to be a good quality balsamic vinegar. Gently fry the pine nuts for a few minutes until golden. Put the rocket into a salad bowl then drizzle with balsamic vinegar. Next sprinkle the parmesan and pine nuts over the top. A simple and tasty peppery salad.

The Year 7 winners were Charlotte Sandell, Olivia Dale and Rebecca Knight (assisted by Poppy Dale) with an offering of Sweet Leek, Ricotta and Tomato Lasagne followed by Courgette Cake - not only tasty but also most imaginative. Runners up were Mollie Hawthorne and Ella Vincent with their Stuffed Baked Courgettes with Savoury Couscous Castles and Apple and Blackberry Crumble.

The final of the Youth Speaks competition was held as part of the Arts Festival Week at Perins School and the Rotarian judges were very impressed by the quality of the contestants; selecting both group and individual winners proved to be a daunting task. In the end the Year 10 competition was won by the group consisting of Rachel Moss, Charlotte Heddon and Eleanor Westen who spoke knowledgeably and articulately on the topical question “Do Mobile Phones Affect Their Users?” who narrowly overcame their fellow finalists Megan Fursdon, Ed. McPherson and Jack Hancock who defended the continuation of the Union on the issue of “Freedom for Scotland?”

The Year 8/9 topics “How Does Television Affect Our Lives?” and “How Does Social Networking Affect Our Social Skills?” were also well researched and spoken to with Sam Arrowsmith, Ross Hunter and Milly Cornford, speaking on the latter topic and barely outscoring India Gilmore, Alistair Bayliss and Benjamin O’Connor. For the Individual Awards in Year10 : Rachel Moss was the Best Chair, Charlotte Heddon was Best Speaker, and Eleanor Westen Best Proposer. For the Individual Awards in Year 8/9 : India Gilmore was Best Chair, Ross Hunter was Best Speaker and Milly Cornford Best Proposer.

Charles Dickens would undoubtedly be proud of the youngsters in Alresford.

They have shown, once again, that they can not only hold their own in a public debate, but have the resources and skills not to need to “ask for more”. Over a couple of recent weeks, teams of pupils at Perins took part in this years Rotary Youth Speaks competition, showing considerable skill in developing an argument – and Harry Inigo-Jones leads the way by winning the Alresford heat of the Rotary Young Chef Competition.

With the support of the Cook Academy, based in Station Road, Henry showed his culinary skills with the preparation of a two-course meal, with no adult help. Henry who is 11, lives in Ropley, and attends Twyford Prep. School. He prepared a two-course meal comprising turkey cakes & sticky toffee date pudding. Preparation time was 30 minutes, and cooking time 2 hours. Henry will now go on to the next round on 25th February at Ferndown School.

Kate Hughes, who had the tasty job of judging the competition, set up the Cook Academy in 2005. and has developed an extensive curriculum, drawing on her years of experience as a former senior lecturer at Leith's School of Food & Wine in London. Cook Academy offer a range of cookery courses from beginners to experts. They also work with budding young chefs from 7 to 16. Find out more from the website at www.cookacademy.co.uk

Meanwhile, in Perins, a separate heat of the competition showed quality cooking and imagination in the varied offerings of the ten teams in the final. From the original forty teams, the Rotary judges were faced with a very high quality field but in the end decided that the Year 8 winners were Harrison Curtis and Oscar Cunningham with the Fresh Salad and Haloumi Cheese Salad followed by Sea Bass with Crispy Pancetta with Asian Greens - an indisputably outstanding dish and the runners up Alex Cross and Ellie Gifford’s offering of Crossy’s Cottage Pie and Healthy Banana Cookies with Fresh Fruit Salad.

which we would like to see rolled out in NHS Trusts across the country. I am working in Parliament to see what we can do nationally to make this happen and locally I am working well with our new hospital Trust to see we sharpen up in Winchester. Initial results are encouraging and I would urge you to find out more if this is a subject that interests you; www.stevebrine.com/miscarriagecare

Since I last wrote for the Alresford Forum I have also attended a very special service at St Paul's Cathedral in London for the consecration of the new Bishop of Winchester and delivered the annual MPs breakfast briefing to our local business community. I’ve spoke in the House of Commons on removing illegal workers, the new diversity on our High Street when it comes to lending money to small business and the future of (truly) local television in this country. I have also held a really bustling ‘street surgery’ in Alresford (on Saturday 11 February as pictured) with Cllr Ernie Jeffs and, as always, we met a huge number of people who raised issues from local planning applications to the future of the European Union!

If you would like to get in touch on any issue you feel strongly about or need my help, please don't hesitate to get in touch via [email protected]. There is also a huge amount of information about my work locally and in Westminster at www.stevebrine.com.

Steve Brine MP

The job of Member of Parliament requires me to be a generalist, like

a GP in some respects, but in Westminster you tend to specialise and have periods when you really home in on a particular area of policy. I tend to work on health matters (especially the fight against cancer), on environmental matters and I have recently been elected to the powerful Justice Select Committee.

Our job is to look very closely indeed at Ken Clarke (never a dull moment I can assure you!) and examine the expenditure, administration and policy of the Ministry of Justice, Attorney General's Office and Crown Prosecution Service among others. I was really pleased to join the committee, which is currently looking at the way Freedom of Information legislation is working and how Youth Justice is administered in England. I am personally very interested in the whole agenda around prison reform, reducing re-offending rates and crime diversion so hope to use my new position to promote those causes within Parliament. If you have thoughts on any of these issues I would be especially pleased to hear from you. Following a moving visit to my surgery recently I am also working with the campaigning website MumsNet on a new campaign to improve the care given to couples who experience miscarriage. I am sure many readers of this column will have some experience of miscarriage or know people who have because it is much more common than we might think. The campaign has produced a five point plan

Issue 64 MARCH www.alresfordforum.co.uk

When a member of the public rings me, it can be on any number of issues, and one call received last year has brought forward a really interesting project for Winchester. The

caller, Tony Dowland, contacted me because he wants to create a memorial for the soldiers who passed through the Morn Hill Camp from 1914. He contacted me because the event happened mainly in the Itchen Valley Division.

In World War I, there was a large camp for up to 50,000 soldiers set up at Morn Hill. They arrived here in the process of transit to France, and came through again on the return trip home. Unfortunately, too few did return from the front, and tragically, hundreds died of Spanish flu before they could reach their families. In 1918, a railway was built to carry supplies up to the Avington copse area at the west of the site, but it was quickly dismantled after the war ended.

After some preparation, we held a Morn Hill Memorial Launch Event at the Holiday Inn, Winchester, and invited a number of interested parties to work out how to achieve the memorial by 2014, the 100th Anniversary of the setting up of the camp. We have had support from Brigadier David Harrison, one of the Deputy Lieutenants of Hampshire, who has agreed to be Chairman of the group, the broadcaster Dan Snow, and our local MP too.

This is where you come in! Do you or your family have any recollections of the camp? Do you have any knowledge of the part of local military history? Perhaps your family history includes receiving the soldiers or seeing the railway? Please let us know!

JAcKIe's county corner

The County council owns part of the old railway line from Alresford to Kings Worthy, and I am delighted that after extensive consultation, a section has now been designated as a

Public footpath with permissive cycle rights. It is a hidden gem offering excellent sheltered flat walking, especially for those who are less nimble. We want to develop a ‘Friends of the Line’ group, which could work with the owners, and look to extend the route further if possible. I am holding an ‘open morning’ from 10am on the old line at Couch Green on Saturday May 12th as a first step towards this.

M3 junction 9 is a nightmare for residents in the division. The Highways Agency has been sitting on a proposal to improve traffic flows there. We County councillors have been pressing for the Agency to make a decision so that the work can begin on a feeder lane from Easton lane, and improved gaps in the timing for Spitfire link drivers.

The second railway liaison meeting has taken place at Micheldever Station. A listed building, it is another gem, which houses a busy station, popular with commuters from across this area. At the meeting, local councillors and residents met with representatives from Network Rail and South West Trains to see what can be done to smarten up the station and alleviate parking issues there.

Plans for Putting Pedestrians First in Alresford have slowed because of lack of funding, but a working party ensures this continues as a high priority for Alresford.

The County Council has agreed to update their pedestrian statistics, in preparation for a full Town Access Plan, but I asked them not to do this in the period of bad weather: the town was very quiet in sub-zero temperatures!

planning, development and housing issues, but the list is long and varied. Many of these problems are raised at my monthly Surgery on the fourth Friday (Community Centre) while some come via the telephone or by personal contact.

One major issue for local residents was the administrative mess made by the City Council with the implementation of the joint Refuse Collection Service. There were many complaints from all parts of the area, but particularly Old Alresford and Bighton. While the joint contract with East Hampshire saved over £2m, the use of operatives from East Hampshire to service Alresford routes was bound to cause confusion. The second problem of the

as suitable for housing development.

As my case list for my ten years as City Councillor moves towards the 500 mark, I recognise that I am now part of an effective local team, with County Councillor Jackie Porter and Councillor Margot Power. Incidentally, we now have to live with the consequences of two development proposals that local residents and I opposed in the recent past (Railway Cutting and Spring Gardens) and you can understand why I spend much of my time trying to defend the Alresfords from damaging planning applications.

It has been a curious year at Winchester City Council with the District

elections in May producing a draw at 27 for both the Lib Dems and the Conservatives. However, supported by the lone Labour Councillor and two Independents, the Conservative took over control of the Council. It is a change that hardly affects me as a City Councillor, because politics are largely irrelevant to life in the Alresfords. My main work during the year has continued to be on

year involved the cuts in the bus services, which are the responsibility of Hampshire County Council. Thanks largely to the pressure from County Councillor Jackie Porter some changes were made, but the City Council refused to provide financial support to keep one key local service in place.

I tried to have the SHLAA status removed from the land adjacent to Arlebury Park. This designation has allowed the owners to claim development land value, thus putting it beyond the financial resources of the Town Council for recreation and sports use. Despite my presentation of a ‘Notice of Motion’ to Council, the Cabinet refused to make the change. Clearly, the City Council see this area

What is your home worth? There are, I believe, two main reasons why most of us

open the pages of the local property papers: either to spend our imaginary lottery win, or to see how our

house compares to those on the market! Let’s face it, we all want to know what our home is worth and a large part of our work is about providing market appraisal reports.

The first thing we need to know are your intentions!

If you want to move in the next few months, you will want to know about timing, price and marketing strategy. If, on the other hand, you are planning to move in the next two or three years, we will need to identify not only the current value of your home, but also how to extract its potential value.

The starting point for any market appraisal is to understand the site, its size and immediate geographic location as well as the wider community, potential for extension or refurbishment, redevelopment opportunities, the property’s current, potential and hope values, historic prices for your home, those of your neighbours and comparables

further afield, the size and strength of the current market (the ratio of buyers to sellers) and predictions of beneficial or detrimental pressures around the corner.

This research will be made up of evidence as well as experience and gut feel. Armed with this, we will normally have a reasonable idea of a property’s value before having seen the house. The visit will allow us to tweak our anticipated prices and understand any other issues we may face during the course of marketing.

Traditionally, a market appraisal takes between one and two hours. For many people, this can be off-putting, not least because of the fear of sitting through a hard-sell from an over-eager agent for 90 minutes! For this reason we have recently launched our 10 minute market appraisal service to sit alongside our traditional ones.

We undertake the same research as we would normally. However, instead of presenting our entire findings during the visit, we arrive with a comprehensive report for you to read at your leisure. We also provide you with a verbal anticipated sale value. And then we wait to hear when you are ready to take it further.

Issue 64 MARCH www.alresfordforum.co.uk

In Hampshire, in the City of Portsmouth, is a hole in the ground. It is deep, dark, mysterious and in the middle of an enormous building site. Behind a screen, nearly four

storeys in height, some important timbers are being sprayed so as to preserve them for future generations. All around is a busy working Royal Navy dockyard going about its business. In another part of the site, others are lovingly putting together the best way to display some priceless Tudor artefacts.

On a sparkling November day I went to visit John Lippiets the Chief Executive of the Mary Rose Trust at the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. He was his usual cheerful self and after putting on the usual protective clothing we went to take a look at the site of the new Mary Rose Museum. The dry dock holding the ship is next to HMS Victory, it’s an intricate site; the logistics of building in an ancient monument, a working dockyard and around/under the 1509 ship is testing. Some 100 plus people were busy creating a steel shaped oval. When complete, within this structure, on one side will be the original timbers, on the other the mirror image of Henry VIII’s flagship so arranged in its decks and compartments. But the really innovative thing is that inside the ship, we will see, in their rightful place, the real jewels of the Museum’s collection. After 2016 the original timbers of the ship will be dried out and both sections united in complete three dimensional glory!

For many years the Mary Rose Trust's volunteers have been lifting off the floor of the Solent the content of this battleship. Longbows, games, “nit combs”, cooking equipment, a vast array of weaponry, sewing kits, the complex array of components for the rigging, pulleys, rope of every description-some thicker than a person’s leg still smelling of pitch – it is, as if day-to-day Tudor naval life has been dumped on us by a visiting time machine. It is the quality of the artefacts that will grab the attention of

visitors and being able to see them where they may have been on the ship is going to be breath taking.

There is one more essential component to this whole experience-the Crew. The Mary Rose sank in 1545 after engaging the French fleet and in sight of King Henry with all hands. You can only imagine the mayhem, fictionally recreated graphically by bestselling novelist C.J.Sansom in the book “Heartstone”- where the many intricacies of design and rigging only helped to drown even more sailors! One whole area of the Museum will be about the people who went down with this ship – numerous remains have been recovered which, with the assistance of the latest forensic science, will give us an intimate insight into the people who lived, worked and died on this elegant ship.

The New Mary Rose museum is to open next year; the many millions of pounds have come from individual and corporate giving, Hampshire County Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund. This is judicious investment as the new Museum, with HMS Victory, a revamped Royal Navy Museum, HMS Warrior and the many other unique features of the dockyard make this site very special. The fact that the dockyard is still a functioning enterprise where hopefully one of the Royal Navy’s new Aircraft carriers will be based makes it all the more relevant.

This is Heritage and Culture creating real jobs. It is expected that the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard with its new Mary Rose Museum will generate 380,000 paying visitors, up by 75,000. This will be a challenge but with the whole of the dockyard working closely together very achievable. The quality and authenticity of what is on offer constantly reinvented is the key to keeping people interested, as is the warmth of the welcome.

The Garden

Japanese Wineberry….. Ribes phoenicolasius. She has cut its ties and allowed it to flounder on the floor, momentarily giving the impression of dominating it. She removed all the dead and then wound and tied it up the 8 feet of its spire in an alternating arterial helix that viewed from a distance resembles a kind of veinal helter skelter, glowing wine red and prickly in the February sun and taller than anything else in the walled garden.

We discussed the pleasure of finding ‘your shape’ when pruning. When I prune Deutzias, Philadelphus, Buddleja etc…… I like to imagine their shape as a fountain issuing from the soil, with every spout moving from the centre out in a perfect arc that never crosses and after

each plume reaches its apogee it begins to fall again under its own weight. If you are pruning a standard Gooseberry, Rose or similar deciduous specimen, start slowly, removing first the dead, the weak, the displaced, walking around the plant, always looking, looking, looking and spontaneously ‘your shape’ will emerge. Your shape may not be my shape but it will be equally pleasing to you. On a guano stained finial a Dunnock pipes his diffident trill

and the shrunken seed heads of Clematis ‘Bill Mckenzie’ along with many of the later flowering clematis, need cutting back hard. Already the green fuse is lit low down at the base…… Fieldfare and Redwing unite for the flight home…but Bill must prune the tunnel unaided, for only he knows his shape.

Julian Blackwell is Head Gardener at Dean House Kilmeston www.deanhousegardens.co.uk

Beneath the thawing lawns, a waking army of patient Gladioli are

now just visible, slitting the warming turf with the points of their unsheathed blades. Bill has started the first of his annual three week vigil pruning and plaiting the vaulted curve of the Wisteria tunnel (floribunda ‘Alba’). He is cutting and stopping the grey flexible rods and weaving them through and around the green of the alternating Laburnum ‘Vossii’. The whole job requires patience and a good eye that will be rewarded in late May/ early June with a 60 metre walk of white and yellow racemes.

he became a writer and gave the students some food for thought about what would happen if there were no writers in the future. He spoke about his new Tarzan book then everyone joined in a lively quiz about how to survive in the jungle. After signing books, Andy Briggs spent the remainder of the morning visiting the year 7 Transformational Learning classes helping them to think about their ideas for a super hero story.

Linda Sheppard, Library Manager said, “Andy was a real inspiration to the students and his enthusiasm about his job as a writer came across with his great sense of humour and energy. The year 7s seemed to have a really enjoyable morning.”The students left feeling motivated about writing and creating their own adventure story. In Transform lessons the students will use some Interactive Fiction software to develop and write their stories. They will have workshops about spelling, punctuation, grammar and writing clues. We look forward to working with year 7 and seeing their Interactive Fiction creations, inspired by Andy Briggs.

Paige Deakin (11) said, “I thought Andy Brigg’s presentation was really good and when I met him he seemed cheerful and friendly.”

Andy Briggs Website: http://www.andybriggs.co.uk/

Andy Briggs, author and script writer, visited year 7

students at Perins School last week as part of the Transformational Learning programme. Andy has written several books including his latest, ‘Tarzan: the Greystoke Legacy’, which will continue with more sequels. This year is the 100th anniversary of the book ‘Tarzan of the Apes’ by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Andy Briggs visited the Edgar Rice Burroughs estate to ask for permission to write a new Tarzan story for modern times.

The new story has many of the same characters as the old books such as Tarzan, Jane and Kerchak the ape but includes issues such as the problems of deforestation in the rainforests.

Andy started the morning with an interesting and engaging talk about how

are fewer buyers out there the days of gazumping are hopefully long gone.

Finally, sellers have never had such a wealth of choice of agents and advice. Selling your home, for whatever reason, is a big decision and without beating around the bush, an expensive one. So vendors are being very savvy when it comes to who they choose to spend their money with, and, don’t be fooled by thinking that cost is the final decision maker.

Today’s seller wants good service, local knowledge, an agent who will understand their needs and not try to sell them a frilly package of services. With less board level pressure, this is where an independent can have a competitive edge over a corporate outfit which really plays into the hands of today’s seller.

Put all these factors together with a variety of great tools such as the advice Sam and her team provide here, actually the path to selling your home in 2012 is probably more achievable than you first thought!

Philip PradoIndependant Property ConsultantTel: 01962 [email protected]

We’ve just had our busiest weekend since setting up

our agency (Philip Prado Property Consultants) six months ago and it’s only the second weekend of the New Year. A fluke some might say or a sign of better things to come?

Whilst we agree with statistics, there is less housing stock and there are fewer buyers out there, there are actually some positives to be drawn from this if you are considering selling your home in 2012.Firstly, you can guarantee that the people your agent sends round to view your property will be serious buyers. None of these “Sunday drivers”, just having a nose. Today’s buyer knows what they want and isn’t about to waste his or your time. So if they don’t think your property is right for them, they won’t come to see it.

Secondly, today’s buyer is prepared and has their finances in place. As a seller you know then that any offer made on your property, isn’t subject to the purchaser needing to secure a mortgage, they will already have a mortgage offer in place and thus help expedite the sales process.

Another bonus for sellers in today’s market is that, in our experience, buyers aren’t hanging around, they are making their decision quickly as to whether they want to purchase a property or not. And, because there

selling your house in 2012 - has there ever Been a Better time?

Want to save around £10,000?Do you have a growing family? Are you running out of space?Thinking of moving house?

Have you thought of getting a conservatory built? You will find that it is far easier and quicker to build than a traditional extension and is less likely to run into the hassles of planning permission. Our experience and intuition

will combine with your dreams and visions to create a home that you wish you had created years ago.

So what are the benefits of buying a conservatory over moving home and do the benefits outweigh the costs involved?

1. Adding a conservatory to your home will increase the size of one of your downstairs rooms – especially for a new family and increase the value of your home.2. It is cost effective. 3. The cost of moving including the legal costs and stamp duty, can easily be estimated at around £10,000. 4. It provides a smooth transition into the garden and creates a wonderful outdoor living space.5. It makes for a great dining room – in the spring and summer providing great views and a wonderful ambience in the evening. 6. Above all it is far less stressful than moving home.
