We all know Rutland and all of Vermont have been in the limelight recently concerning the drug addiction problem hitting our communities. The crime rate has gone up. The overdoses have increased. More and more fami- lies are being affected and are feeling the pain of their loved ones being caught in the trap of addictions. Dismas and The Bowse Health Trust have partnered in our effort to fight the battle with those who struggle. We now have the funds to use twofold in fighting this battle. First, there are funds to provide housing and a stipend for a Resident Outreach Coordinator. This is someone who has not been in the prison system and hence is not afraid of “ratting out” someone who has broken a rule of Dismas and helps us keep the house clean and sober for those who truly want to change their lives around. But living in a clean and sober house is not enough. Addictions call to you around every corner, after every job rejection, following every family argu- ment, and just during the late night hours of boredom when one is used to “partying” with friends. So, we needed more than someone to call them on their behavior. We needed to offer them incentives and alternatives to leading healthy lifestyles – a main objective of the Bowse Health Trust. This is where our community partners come in – and we can’t thank them enough. The Gymnasium and the Green Mountain Rock Climbing Center give us discounted memberships. Bruce Faulkner from The Bike Shop has worked on all of our bikes, fixing tires, using gallons of WD-40 oil cleaning them up, fixing gears and brakes and even finding good bargain bikes for us to purchase along with high quality bike locks. We thank Don Tadio for also collecting bikes for us. Fishing becomes another outlet and Bob Williams from Williams Hardware Store in Poultney helped us purchase 10 fishing poles with basic gear. Each resident who wants a fishing license can get one; this especially comes in handy for the camping trips. Rutland Bowlerama gives us a great discount so an outing on a Friday night or Sunday afternoon becomes something to look forward to. Hopefully this winter we will take advantage of the generosity of Bill Mercier at Mountain Meadows Lodge for an afternoon of snowshoeing. Last but not least, after a few “bad hair days” behind bars, Pam Rondeau from Pam’s Classic Cuts has offered us discounted coupons for a real haircut when they first arrive to the house. We are always looking for more great, healthy opportunities to take advantage of. If you know of any place or any activity please let us know!! Our Community Partners Thank you, Bowse Health Trust!! Staying Healthy. Having Fun. Building Community. Strengthening Friendships. Sharing Laughter.

These phrases sum up what can be said about the gift Dismas has received from the Bowse Health Trust in the three year grant they have given to the Rut-land Dismas House. We all know Rutland and all of Vermont have been in the limelight recently concerning the drug addiction problem hitting our communities. The crime rate has gone up. The overdoses have increased. More and more fami-lies are being affected and are feeling the pain of their loved ones being caught in the trap of addictions.

“A lot of these opportunities are great! Timing and getting more peo-ple interested is in the works. If you have any other activities in mind that would be great!” C.B.

Like us on our Face Book page – Rutland Dismas House - and see the photos of the fun we are having at getting and staying healthy!

“It is an excellent way to save money and get fit. It is a bless-ing we have these opportunities. I plan on taking full advantage.” T.M.

“The activities afforded me at Dismas allow me to enjoy my life, myself, and people I would not normally be asso-ciated with in my recent past. The use of a bicycle gives me the freedom to enjoy nature and gives me the means to transport myself to work, doctor’s appointments, meetings (N.A. and A.A.), and most important to myself is to be able to go and visit my loved ones.” J.T.

When I came to Rutland, Vermont I had not the slightest idea what to expect from the project be-cause I’d never had the experience of working with former inmates be-fore. And, of course, I never thought I would have such a great time here.

From the very beginning I was given fascinating tasks to fulfill and events to take part in. Three days after I arrive we had a camping trip where I had my chance to get to know the residents and the staff and make friendships. The following week I took part in the Dinner Auc-tion, my first experience ever in fund raising. There were busy days but I enjoyed being part of it.

Of course, not everything went smoothly with the residents. I lived with 10 guys in the house and we represent different cultures. That’s why sometimes I didn’t un-derstand the guys, sometimes they didn’t understand me and make fun at it. But still they were patient and understanding enough to explain to me and help me with anything I got questionut s about. And most of the time we had fun participating in a wide range of social and sport ac-tivities: concerts, movies, jogging, hiking, biking, basketball, swim-ming, cycling.

Working on this project I hoped to share with the residents a part of my world where it’s safe, where you can trust people around you, where you can be happy and have fun without using sub-stances. And I hope I partly man-aged to do this. In return looking at the residents and their everyday struggle with addictions I learned one important thing. Never give up and keep struggling however hard this challenge seems! It inspires me. And the most significant thing I learned is Dismas House really helps ex-prisoners to reconcile with society.

I was amazed how friendly, attentive and hospitable people treated me. One of the board mem-bers, Kathy Ross, took me to a trip to the Shelburne Museum and Burlington; another board mem-ber, Carol Barbagallo, invited me to a breakfast and small trip to Ver-mont cities and beauties, the co-director, Terese, took me to the musical “Les Miserables”, it was so amazing.

I really appreciate what all the volunteers do for the residents. Every day I watched them donate things and money for Dismas House and cook a dinner every night. Oh, I remember I had home-made des-serts I’d never tried before: delicious cheesecakes, brownies, crisp pies.

One of my favorite moments was when the project was almost over and everyone, the residents and the staff, thanked me for my job and we made an ice-cream fare-well party. They told me they would be missing me. And I will, for sure. That moment I felt my work was really valuable. This I appreciate the most.

P.S. I strongly believe that we never meet people just to say them “Goodbye”. We meet them on pur-pose: to make our life happier and more colorful or, on the contrary, to make us learn something. So I won’t say “Goodbye”, just believe we’ll meet again.
