OMEGA-3 MYTHS: KNOW THE TRUTH

Summer

Yippee! Summer is here! This is my favorite time of the year. I don’t think it can ever be too hot, and we can never

get too much sunshine or too many fresh fruits and vegetables. Yep—by far, I like summertime the best.

I know that not everyone agrees with me about summer. I suspect those in Texas, Arizona, and other hotter parts of the country might tire of 100-degree-plus days, and many desperately hope for rain. My grandfather used to say that what he disliked most about hot days is that you can only remove so many clothes—but in the cold weather, you can always add another sweater or blanket. He may have been right, but I’ll still take the heat any day.

Summer is also a time that I can survive simply on the food I grow in my own backyard (other than dairy products because my suburban community allows residents to own chickens but not cows). Although my garden is only a few hundred square feet, I grow an abundance of strawberries, raspberries, peas, beans, spinach, lettuce, squash, pep-pers, and—of course—several variet-

ies of tomatoes. And what I don’t grow in my garden, I can easily find at the local farmers’ market. With the exception of a few fruits, I hardly ever need to purchase produce at the supermarket in the summer. This means I can eat healthier, be sure my foods are GMO-free, and save money.

What else is great about summer? It’s the perfect season for commu-nities to join together to sponsor local events. Festivals, block parties, reunions, and other celebrations are a great way to enjoy time with family and friends. Whether a local com-munity event or your annual state fair, you can probably find an event almost every weekend within a short drive of your home.

So get out and enjoy the warm summer days! We have already passed the summer solstice, and we continue to approach fall. The clock is ticking!
