Interview with Student Alumni Association

The first Student/Alumni Networking social, coordinated by the Student Alumni Association and UMAA, took place in the Presidents Room of Brantly Hall on April 17. A UMAA staffer interviewed SAA members Cassie Flynn and Meghan Keeley after the event.

UMAA: Was the first Student/Alumni Networking Social a success?

CF: It went really well. We had eight alumni participants [John Buck, M.ed. ’99, Mora Payne ’54, Anne Hosler ’09, Dale Stoverud ’70, Tyson Parman ’10, Erik Johnston ’11, Susan English ’72 and Mary Tromly ’67]. Not all the students who attended registered, but I would say we had about 30 people in the audience.

MK: The event started with a panel discussion. The panel had a pretty wide range of experience and insight. After, we had a chance to mingle, talk with alums and ask personally directed questions.

CF: The students were mostly going into their senior year or just getting into their major courses, so it was good for us to get some specific guidance about what to expect.

MK: And it was nice to hear practical life advice, not just career advice.

UMAA: Who were some of the speakers you especially connected with?

CF: Mora Payne, class of ’54, told us to call her again whenever we have an event. She really captured the room, telling us about how she reads the Wall Street Journal every day on her iPhone. It was really reassuring to hear her say that she’s still figuring out what she wants to do with her life, so we have nothing to worry about.

MK: Anne Hosler was a 2009 graduate. It was interesting to hear her talk about how she’s in a career that isn’t directly related to her major. She said it doesn’t really matter what your major is, college will prepare you to be able to think and adapt to whatever role you find yourself in. She said to say “yes” to everything people ask you to do, try every opportunity. I’m planning to follow her advice.

UMAA: Do you plan to host the social again next year?

CF: Yes! Definitely.

MK: And next year, we’re hoping to make it even bigger, get the word out to more students across campus, invite even more alums.
