AMA joins forces with COMP to establish the University Research Facility in Big Data Analytics (UBDA)

On 8 May 2018, Department of Applied Mathematics (AMA) and Department of Computing (COMP) cohosted an Opening Ceremony for the University Research Facility in Big Data Analytics (UBDA), the first university-wide research facility in big data analytics among universities in Hong Kong. President Professor Timothy W. Tong, the Under Secretary for Innovation and Technology, Dr. David Chung, the Chairman of the University Grants Committee (UGC), Mr Carlson Tong and Deputy President and Provost Professor Philip Chan and more than 300 guests attended the ceremony and witnessed this important milestone in the development of big data analytics. Big Data Analytics is an analytic process of a huge volume of scattered and dynamic data sets from multiple data sources to uncover hidden patterns, explore unknown correlations, and predict future events. The use of Big Data Analytics will result in better optimization of decision making, resource utilization and planning. This technology has become essential in our economy and society, and its applications have continued to grow in different areas and industries. Managed by big data experts from AMA, COMP and other disciplines, UBDA will provide consultancy service and technical support to PolyU research community and industry partners, assisting them to develop innovative solutions to research problems and application challenges by capitalizing on the use of models, algorithms and platforms for big data analytics and processing. With the support of the most advanced computing infrastructure and tools, UBDA will foster cross-disciplinary research collaborations in PolyU, establish a strong partnership with industries on big data analytics applications, and promote big data education in Hong Kong. As of today, UBDA has already kicked off collaborative big data analytics projects with colleagues in PolyU and external partners including Alibaba, GogoVan, Huawei, the Hong Kong Police Force, and Microsoft.

理大設大數據實驗室 下月啟用

理大成立大數據分析中心實驗室，將與阿里巴巴、微軟、GoGoVan等機構合作，蒐集數據供分析。該實驗室斥資5,000萬元建成，預

夥公私營機構 分析數據

曹指出，現已有8至10間公、私營機構合作夥伴，提供數據予實驗室，供理大師生、與校有合作研究的人員使用，包括阿里巴巴、

華為、微軟、香港警務處等。其中本地的GoGoVan有儲存定單的時間、日期和各區分布等數據，經理大研究人員分析後，得出市民

對送貨服務的需求、規律，方便調動司機。

此外，實驗室團隊亦正與機場管理局合作，研發一套資源管理系統，以大數據技術分析航班抵港時間、抵港行李數目、停機坪交通

情況、卸下行李速度、行李在輸送帶的逗留時間等，提升分配行李輸送帶效率。曹表示，機場每天須處理500架抵港班機，透過大

數據技術，盼做到按實際需要調動行李帶。

理大資訊科技處主管潘永鋮指，稍後會做問卷調查，了解研究人員數據用量需求，按研究規模釐定免費使用量。

理大指出，兩年前開始籌備建設實驗室，共斥資5,000萬元，主要用作添置伺服器、電腦設備及軟件工具，預計於6月正式啟用。

理大設大數據實驗室 支持智能城市研究 六月投入運作 校內優先使用

　　現今各行各業對大數據分析的需求日益增加。理工大學成立大數據分析中心實驗室，是本港首個服務及支援大學各學系部門而

設的大數據分析研究設施，伺服器配備數千個核心中央處理器（CPU）和圖像處理器（GPU），總數據處理量可達一千二百兆位元組

籌備兩年的理大大數據分析中心實驗室，昨正式成立，校長唐偉章在開幕儀式上表示，實驗室由校內的電子計算、應用數學和資訊

科技專家跨部門攜手成立，冀藉此促成各學科、不同界別夥伴合作，進行科研項目。大數據分析中心實驗室主任曹建農指，實驗室

獲理大撥款五千萬元成立，資金足以營運實驗室五年，現仍在招聘約六至七名大數據分析人員，六月起可投入運作。

　　曹建農表示，以往大學部門的研究，若要採用大數據分析，必須從校外租借設施，所費不菲；成立實驗室後，會提供一定的用

量配額，供校內研究人員免費使用，「但由於不同研究項目的需求有異，我們稍後會在校內作調查，再確定實際配額有多少；若項

目所需的運算用量超出配額，才需要支付額外的費用。」他舉例指，處理二千人的醫療健康數據，與處理過去五年的天氣狀況數據

有明顯分別，希望最後訂立的配額能盡量滿足各項研究需求。

與機管局警務處協作

　　實驗室的伺服器主機配備共約數千個CPU和GPU，總數據處理量可達一千二百TB，成立初期，將重點支持智能城市及物聯網、金

融、醫療三大研究範疇，因此有關研究可優先申請使用。曹建農指，實驗室人員會與研究人員商討分析數據的細節，了解項目研究

要求和目的，按情況需要，甚至會協助收集數據。「我們會協助建立大數據分析和處理的模型、算法和平台，若其他院校與理大有

聯合研究項目也可使用。」

　　至於校外的公私營機構，曹建農指實驗室會以收費形式與他們合作，目前已經與約十個機構，包括正為機管局研發智能應用軟

理大新設大數據中心 助警分析網絡罪案模式

大數據除應用於商業金融分析，亦可分析網絡犯罪，理工大學新成立的大數據分析中心實驗室(UBDA)，合作項目之一便是為警方分

析，網絡罪案中出現的假帳戶及假網站模式，加強打擊網絡罪案。UBDA現有8至10個合作項目，包括微軟、華為及GoGoVan等業界機

構。UBDA總監曹建農表示，初期會集中研究智慧城市、金融及醫療3個範疇。智慧城市方面，與機場合作研發資源管理系統，盼提

升機場物流處理效率。他補充，師生昔日作大數據研究，需租借亞馬遜的平台，而新平台可方便校內的研究團隊作相關分析。

UBDA的前期籌備及5年營運開支約5千萬元，為善用處理系統，校內研究團隊亦需申請才能使用，並按重要性決定使用優次，業界亦

理大大數據實驗室下月「開機」 與警合作減網罪 夥機管局研改善機場管理

香港文匯報訊（記者 唐嘉瑤）面對海量且散亂的數據，大數據分析技術可迅速整理及分析數據，並發現當中的隱藏模式及關聯性

，其應用亦在不同領域和學術研究範疇持續增加。有見及此，理工大學斥資5,000萬元成立首間針對性服務及支援各學系及部門的

大數據分析中心實驗室，將於6月正式運作，初期將會重點支持三大研究範疇，包括智慧城市與物聯網、智慧金融，及智慧醫療與

健康，亦會與約10間知名企業合作，包括阿里巴巴、GoGoVan、華為及微軟等，結合業界推動跨學科研究。

現時實驗室亦已分別與機管局及香港警務處合作，利用大數據改善機場資源管理，及追蹤虛假網絡用家資訊，期望減少網絡罪案

理大昨日舉行大數據分析中心實驗室開幕儀式，校長唐偉章致辭時表示，希望藉着成立實驗室，促成各個學科之間，以及與不同

界別夥伴的合作，攜手進行高端的科研項目。

上述實驗室主要供理大教授、研究生及與理大有合作項目的大學研究人員使用，他們可因應不同研究項目，獲分配免費的有限數

據用量及時間，如若超出指定的數據使用量，他們則需要繳交費用，而相關費用會用作維持實驗室的基本支出。

支持智城物聯網等三大研究

理大大數據分析中心實驗室總監、電子計算學系講座教授曹建農介紹指，實驗室初期將會重點支持三大研究範疇，包括智能城市

及物聯網、智慧金融及醫療健康。

其中已開展的合作項目包括，聯同機管局及香港物流及供應鏈管理應用技術研發中心，研發一套以大數據主導的機場資源管理系

統，提升機場資源管理、包括分配行李輸送帶的效率和智能、航班的實際抵港時間、停機坪交通情況等。現時該研究將會先集中開

發一套智能應用軟件，以改善行李帶的分配和支援按需要作實時變動為目標。

曹建農又表示，實驗室團隊去年開始也與警務處合作，主要研究如何追蹤及辨別虛假的網絡用家身份及資訊，從而減少網絡罪案

。

盼與多間科企發展新項目

當今全球的大數據相關分析研究，企業也佔據了核心角色，曹建農說，希望實驗室亦能讓理大與業界就大數據應用建立堅牢協作

關係，並推動大數據培訓與教育，未來將會與多間科技公司共同發展新項目。

其中實驗室團隊正與GoGoVan合作一個智能物流交通項目，收集了該公司大量有關乘客需求和司機的數據，利用大數據分析技術

，旨在解決按需物流的供需管理的一系列問題，如需求預測、訂單回應時間預測和動態訂單分配等，從而提高GoGoVan的服務質素

和效率。

另外，理大昨亦宣佈成立「大數據與人工智能創新聯盟」，冀望借助這個聯盟提供開放平台促進業界、不同機構與理大在大數據

分析和人工智能方面的合作研究，以解決難題及開發先進的應用程式。

理大大數據分析中心實驗室開幕

【香港商報訊】香港理工大學大數據分析中心實驗室昨日舉行開幕儀式，是本地首間服務及支援大學各學系及部門而設的大數據分

析研究設施。該實驗室配備最先進的電腦設備和軟件工具，並由理大的大數據專家管理，預期可以推動理大的跨學科研究、就大數

據分析的應用建立理大與業界堅牢的協作關係，並推動大數據培訓與教育。

大數據分析是對分散又持續變更的海量數據進行的分析和處理過程，從而發現當中的隱藏模式、未知的關聯，並預測未來的事

件。大數據分析技術可助優化決策、資源運用和對未來的計劃，在現今經濟和社會變得不可或缺，其應用亦在不同領域和行業持續

增加。

支援各學系科研社群等夥伴

理大校長唐偉章教授在儀式上說：「作為一所與時並進與關顧社會需要的大學，理大聯同校內的電子計算、應用數學及資訊科

技專家攜手成立實驗室。希望藉此促成理大各個學科之間，及與不同界別夥伴的合作，攜手進行科研項目」。

據介紹，大數據分析中心實驗室初期將會重點支持3大研究範疇：智能城市及物聯網、金融及醫療健康。實驗室由理大電子計

算學系、應用數學系及其他學系的大數據專家主管，將會向理大的科研社群和業界協作夥伴提供相關顧問服務和技術支援，協助他

們建立大數據分析和處理的模型、算法和平台，就不同研究題目和應用難題提出創新的解決方案。

其中一個例子是大數據分析中心實驗室團隊正與香港機場管理局、香港物流及供應鏈管理應用技術研發中心合作，研發一套以

大數據主導的機場資源管理系統，提升機場資源管理、包括分配行李輸送帶的效率和智能。機場每天要處理500架抵港班機，平均

且有效地分配和使用行李輸送帶是一大挑戰。行李輸送帶的分配效率受一系列因素影響，包括航班的實際抵港時間、抵港行李的數

目、地面行李處理設備的到達時間、停機坪交通情況、卸下行李速度、行李在輸送帶的逗留時間等。項目現階段的研究將集中開發

一套智能應用軟件，在分析以上提及的各個因素後，就行李輸送帶的分配作出建議，以改善行李帶的分配和支援按需要作實時變動

為目標。此項目同時獲得MongoDB與iTran公司贊助。

成立大數據與AI 創新聯盟

理大亦宣布成立大數據與人工智能創新聯盟，冀望借助這個聯盟提供開放平台促進業界、不同機構與理大在大數據分析和人工

智能方面的合作研究，以解決難題及開發先進的應用程式。
