Helpful ServicesWe recently had a visit from a local
health care company; they came to talkto the residents at Sandy Cove aboutthe services they can provide. Shetalked about their nurses, physicaltherapists, occupational therapists andtheir private duty caregivers. There areNUMEROUS homecare agencies tochoose from, but how do you knowwhen it might be appropriate to use oneof these companies? Here is justone example.
Let’s say you have chronic pain fromarthritis in your back and hands. You’velived with this a LONG time, but you’venoticed recently that it’s causing youmore discomfort, or making it moredifficult to complete daily tasks(opening bottles, putting on shoes, buttoning shirts, sitting up from a lyingposition). Homecare agencies wouldtypically start off by sending a nurse toyour home for an assessment. If theyfeel there is something they could helpyou with, they would contact yourdoctor and let them know what theyobserved. If your doctor agreed with theplan, they could proceed. Often timeswhen dealing with chronic pain, medication is not the ONLY answer. The homecare nurse may feel that thereare some tools that will make thesetasks easier for you.
Helpful Services Cont.Maybe it’s a sock aide to help
you get your socks on withouthaving to bend completely over.Maybe you’d benefit from anassist bar in the bathroom, oreven on your bed. They may feelthat some physical therapy mighthelp strengthen the musclesaround the area causingdiscomfort, which will ultimatelylessen the pain. Homecareagencies provide a wonderfulservice and work directly withyour physician to come up withthe best plan for you in yourhome. If you ever feel that youwould like more information, orfeel you could benefit from anassessment from a homecarenurse, do not hesitate to call.

The Rusty PumpA single traveler had hiked for many
miles across the desert; his watersupply was gone, and he knew if hedid not find water soon, he wouldsurely die.
In the distance he saw what lookedlike an abandoned cabin, and when hearrived, he discovered an old rustypump near the back door. Then henoticed a tin can tied to the pump, with a note inside. The note had thefollowing inscription:
“Dear Stranger: The well has nevergone dry, but the pump needs to beprimed in order to bring up the water.Under the white rock, I buried a jar ofwater, away from the sun. There isenough water in the jar to prime thepump. Pour half of it into the pump towet the leather. Wait, then pour in therest of the water and pump like crazy. When you are finished, please fill thejar and put it back as you found it forthe next traveler who comes this way.Have faith, and believe.”
If you were a lonely traveler in thedesert, what would you do? Will youdig the water jar from the sand anddrink it? Or will you believe, and inbelieving pour every drop of waterinto pump?
Will you take the risk, both foryourself, and for the next wearytraveler that may pass that way?

Game Time
Word Play:Flexible FunFlex your
vocabulary and laughwith friends byplaying this simpleword game. Theobject of the game isto take turnsannouncing lettersthat eventually spell aword but avoidsaying the final letterof a word. Forexample, player onebegins with “C.”Player two adds “A.”To avoid ending thegame, the next letterchoice should not be“T,” because thatcompletes a word(“cat”). For everyword that youcomplete, you lose apoint. The personwho lasts thelongest—losing theleast points—is thewinner. Beware ofeliminating anypossible words withyour letter choices. For example, if thesequence so far is“KN-,” you couldchoose the letter “I”but not another “N.”
