THE BATTLEOF TRENTON
The War for Independence against the British was going badly and the Americanswere due for a win. The enemy had driven the Continental Army out of New York andinto Pennsylvania. It was an especially harsh winter and General Washington wasfaced with an ominous deadline: he was about to lose several hundred men whoseperiod of enlistment was about to end.

The victory Washington desperately soughtcame on Christmas Day, December 25, 1776.Washington’s strategy depended upon surprise. He gathered about 2,400 men from Virginia,Delaware, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and NewYork and loaded them onto boats to cross theDelaware River the afternoon before Christmas. The river was flowing with ice chunks. By 11 pm,a heavy snow and sleet storm had set in. It tookWashington’s men all night to cross the river and,at approximately 3 am, they arrived on shore.
Tired, hungry, and cold, the menmarched towardTrenton. They were about to face the British16th Light Dragoons, well-clothed in red coatsand leather crested helmets. The British wereaccompanied by German mercenaries dressedin Prussian-style military outfits. Washington’smen entered Trenton from many directions.
The Americans entered houses and shot downat their enemies. The British and Hessians werecaught completely by surprise; many were drunkfrom celebrating the holiday. The battle lasted45 minutes before the largely Hessian force sur-rendered. Nine hundred were taken prisoner.
The win was a momentum-builder for theAmerican Army. It galvanized the war effortand inspired many more men to enlist. GeorgeWashington wrote to General McDougall: “I hopethat the late success at Trenton on the 26thand the consequence of it, will change the faceof matters not only there but every where else.”Washington followed quickly with another vic-tory 20 miles north at Princeton before takingrefuge for the winter.

BOBBY THOMSONTHE GIANTS WINTHE PENNANT!
These were the words of announcer RussHodges, the Giants’ broadcaster, almost sixtyyears ago. In the rubber game of the three-game playoff between the Brooklyn Dodgersand the New York Giant’s to determine the Na-tional League pennant, Bobby Thomson hit oneof the most famous homeruns in baseball his-tory. Known as “the shot heard ‘round theWorld,” it capped an amazing second-half-of-the-season comeback in which the Giants hadscraped back from a thirteen and a half gamedeficit to tie the Dodgers. Then, in this ultimateplayoff game, they were down again, trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning. Thomson’shomerun put the Giants into the World Series.
Thomson passed away this summer. He hademigrated from Scotland at the age of 3 withhis parents. A talented athlete from youth, hewas signed by a Giants’ minor league teamstraight out of high school for $100 a month.World War II interrupted his baseball career fora few years during which he served in the AirForce. He returned to baseball, and became asolid major leaguer in no time, finishing with acareer batting average of .279. But, of course, hisoverall career was defined by his famous homer.
Thomson once said, “I can remember feelingas if time was just frozen. It was a delirious, delicious moment.” By the way, the pitcher forthe Dodgers that day was Ralph Branca; he andThomson became friends and made many app-earances together over the years to celebrate whatmany consider the greatest moment in profes-sional baseball history. Of his death, Branca said:“We got to become very good friends, we hadsimilar values. He was a good family man —a hard-working man… We had fun playing incharity golf tournaments and went to a lot of base-ball card shows together in the '80s. I rememberHBO doing a whole special on us. He was reallya good guy who we're all going to miss."

STYLE THAT STANDS FOR CHANGE
No, it’s not the fact that she shows herarms (by the way, if we at American Patriothad those arms we’d go sleeveless allwinter) or that she wore a cardigan tomeet the Queen of England. What sets ourcurrent First Lady apart are three words —“off the rack.” While designers clamor todress her and she could have any garment,at any price created specifically for her,Michelle Obama prefers to keep it real. She makes her greatest fashion statementby choosing the same clothes that areavailable to all women. She favors moder-ately priced labels that are in most everywoman’s closet such as J. Crew, H&M,Talbots, and Donna Ricco. Women don’thave to swoon and dream about owning adress like the First Lady’s; they can go
online and order it for themselves. In fact, when Michelle Obama appeared on theView in her off-the-rack, black and whitefloral dress by designer Donna Ricco, itquickly sold out in stores.
“So what?” you might ask. So you can ownthe same dress. Big deal! But expensiveclothing can be a symbol of economicdivide. Maybe it’s just a small change fromprevious tenants of the White House, butin these hard times it’s one more way thatthe Obama’s are making sure that theyare never too far removed from the livesof ordinary people. You might even goas far as to say that Michelle Obama ismaking sure that she walks a mile in everywoman’s heels. And that’s a very big deal.
Americans have always been proud of their First Ladies. They are often teachers, influencers, ambassadors and, when we are lucky, representative ofwhat is best in the country. And dissect-ing their wardrobes has always been afavorite pastime of fashion devotees andaverage Americans alike, whether it begushing over Jackie’s perfectly tailoredOleg Cassini gowns or rolling our eyesat Nancy Reagan’s overpriced Ungaros. In this forum, the statuesque Michelle Obama and herfashion sense has certainly not been overlooked. With boldaccessory choices and youthful ensembles, one thing that everyone can agreeon is that Michelle Obama has a way with clothes. But what makes Mrs. Obama’sstyle truly unique is something that a First Lady has not done in recent memory.

Many of us want to Buy American, feeling it’s the right thing to do. But it is not as easyas it once was because, as we all know, the USA doesn’t produce as many products as weonce did and sometimes it is hard to figure out which are truly American. When lookingto buy American, there are three factors to think about: company ownership, where theproduct is actually manufactured, and where do the parts come from.

maybe a group of teenage boys huddlingtogether before a basketball game.Seemingly insignificant snapshots thatlive in every person’s memory, yet whencalled to the forefront, have the powerto remind us of where we came from. These are the scenes that populateNorman Rockwell’s America.
One of our country’s most beloved artists,Rockwell produced over 4,000 works inhis lifetime. But it was his work for theSaturday Evening Post that cementedhis place in the hearts of the people.Through his illustrations, Rockwell toldthe story of the ordinary American andilluminated the commonplace in away that captured the essence of theAmerican spirit. While he was oftencriticized for being too idealistic or asone critic put it, creating “an Americathat never was and will never be,”Rockwell retorted that he was showing“the America I knew and observed toothers who might not have noticed.”In addition to creating over 300 coversfor the Saturday Evening Post, perhaps
his most important work for the maga-zine — and what would become knownas his most profound contribution to theAmerican people — came in the formof an illustrated response to FranklinRoosevelt’s “Four Freedoms” speechduring World War II. The paintings, titledafter what Roosevelt described as essen-tial human rights — Freedom of Speech,Freedom of Worship, Freedom FromWant and Freedom From Fear —became a symbol of hope and purposefor the country during dark times. Aslegendary graphic designer MiltonGlaser has noted, “Rockwell’s wartimeimagery dealt with nostalgia andyearning ... or with the myths that gavepeople the strength needed to win thewar. He gave us four men around adrugstore counter in “Anytown, USA”listening for the news of D-Day, whileother popular periodicals were publishingphotographs of Omaha Beach.” Rockwellultimately took the paintings on tour andraised 16 million dollars in war bonds. It is the rare artist who uses his work forthe greater good But Norman Rockwell’slove for America’s heritage and people isevident in all the painstakingly detailedportraits. And while academic criticsdebate this place in the world of arthistory, his place within the fabric ofAmerica will never be in question.
