ON 9/11 FIRST LADIES HONOR

UNITED FLIGHT 93

This week, much of the country will be focused

on the site of the World Trade Center to memo-

rialize 9/11, and understandably so. But the

First Ladies — Michelle Obama and Laura

Bush — are traveling together to a remote

spot in Western Pennsylvania to participate

in a ceremony honoring those who died on

United Flight 93.

The 40 victims who died on the flight are

remembered for their heroic decision to

battle the terrorists who had hijacked the

plane and had planned to crash it into either

the Capitol or White House. Originally sched-

uled to go from Newark NJ to San Francisco,

passengers of the hijacked plane learned the

news of the coordinated attacks on the World

Trade Center and the Pentagon, and acted to

regain control of the flight from the hijackers.

In the process, the plane crashed in a field

at Shanksville PA killing all on board. One of

the passengers, Todd Beaner, was overheard

to urge his fellow passengers “Let’s Roll,” and

the phrase has come to be synonymous with

self-sacrifice and initiative in a tough situation.

The location of the First Ladies’ ceremony of

remembrance is the Western Overlook, where

a planned Flight 93 National Memorial is

scheduled to open next year on the 10-year

anniversary of the attacks. According to the

National Park Foundation, “In 2001, the

Western Overlook was the location of the in-

vestigative command post for Flight 93 and

was the point from which the families of the

passengers and crew first observed the crash

site. It was also where the media reported on

the crash and provided the public with the

first images from the crash scene.”

In remarks at a ceremony on the first anniver-

sary of 9/11, Homeland Security Adviser Tom

Ridge said, “We do not know how long it will

take to defeat the scourge of terrorism or how

many Americans will give their lives for the

cause. But we do know one thing with absolute

certainty: The passengers and crew of Flight

93 won the first battle.”

AMERICA’S FUN FOODS

“KISS MAH GRITS”

Grits are one of the oldest American foods dating

back to a similar substance eaten by Native Amer-

ican tribes. The early colonists were introduced to

rockahominie grits, a form of grits prepared by

soaking and beating the grains, by Southeastern

Native American tribes. The name arose when

Northern Europeans adopted an especially coarse

version of the Native American rockahominie —

they called it “grit gruel.”

Colonists quickly adopted the food into their own

culture. The first recorded history of colonists

dining on grits was at a dinner with Sir Walter

Raleigh and his men and local Native Americans.

One of Raleigh’s men commemorated the event

in writing, calling the food “white, faire, and well

tasted.” Grits became especially popular among

those colonists living outside populated areas

because they could grind their own corn and

keep it preserved for a long time. Since corn

was a year-around food, it was integral to the

colonists survival.

The evolution of grits has helped to shape

Southern culture. Throughout its history, the

South has relished its grits, making them a

symbol of its diet, its customs, its humor, and its

hospitality. Grits were preferred over oatmeal and

Cream of Wheat because they held up better than

other breakfast options in heat and humidity.

Grits are a traditional home-style food; very little

has changed since the first preparation. Many

Southerners enjoy cheesy grits or grits served

on the side of eggs. Shrimp and grits became a

staple breakfast of Southern coastal fisherman

early on. With a rekindled interest in Southern

comfort food, grits are receiving a serious make-

over by creative chefs across the country. A

recently written cookbook, Glorious Grits, shows

gourmet grits dishes such as Asparagus-Grits

Strata, Huevos Rancheros on Cilantro-Grits

Cakes, and even a Grits Bruschetta.

Still, the age old question remains: which type

of grits is better, yellow or white? Most South-

erners would argue that yellow grits have a more

intense corn flavor, and are the grits of choice.

This truly American food can be cooked up in

as little as fifteen minutes, and makes a perfect

side dish for any meal.

AMERICAN PATRIOT 7

Grits have long been a cuisine of choice by Southerners. But wheredid this thick, coarsely ground, porridge-like substance originate?

Historic New England crystallizes at the Boston Freedom Trail, a red brick track through

downtown Boston that stops at sixteen points of significance in the history of freedom.

The Trail is made up of 16 distinct, original historic sites related to the establishment

of the country. Established in 1958, the Freedom Trail is a national icon and draws more

than three million tourists, residents of Massachusetts, and school children each year.

From the protests of Samuel Adams and James Otis, to the Boston Massacre and the

Boston Tea Party, to the liberation of Boston in 1776 by General Washington and his

army, to the site of the first public school in America, this historic walks takes in sites and

tells stories crucial to America’s independence. The most sensible place to start is the

Visitor Information Center in Boston Common, where free maps are available as well as

audio and GPS tours. A kids favorite is the 90-minute “Walk into History” tour by guides.

Joining Kessler in dedicating the stampwas Cooper's daughter Maria CooperJanis. “My father would have been veryflattered by this honor, but he was al-ways very self deprecating,” saidCooper's daughter. “If he were heretoday, he’d probably say, ‘See, lookwhat you get for falling off a horse.’Janis added that her father had astrong commitment to nature and Na-tive Americans. 12 AMERICAN PATRIOT

With the National Football League seasonin full swing around the country, andfootball challenging baseball as the“National Pastime,” it is hard to imaginethat professional football struggled tostay afloat in its early years. That it has survived — and thrives beyondimagination — is due in no small part to a name little known among today’sgeneration of sports fans:

GEORGE HALAS

FORGOTTENHERO

AMERICAN PATRIOT 13

George Halas was a founding fatherof professional football back in thebeginning of the 1900s. He wasplayer/coach when the ChicagoBears were still playing as the Decatur (IL) Staleys. He was there to move them to Chicago, and henamed them the Bears. He was at the first meeting, located ata car dealership lot in Canton, Ohio, where a group of owners formedthe American Professional FootballConference, which became theNational Football League.

Understanding the need to find away to steal attention away from more estab-lished sports — Major League Baseball, college football and boxing held sway inthose days — Halas discovered and mar-keted the first true professional footballstar in Harold "Red" Grange. He then tookthe Bears and Grange on a coast-to-coasttour to promote professional football as a game of speed and strength. He hadhis Bears play the New York Giants atthe Polo Grounds in front of more than65,000 spectators, the largest crowd tosee a professional football game at thetime. Although the tour took less than threeweeks, it included eight games in 12 daysand went from New York to California.

Among other Halas contributions to foot-ball: he was the first to hold daily practicesessions, to utilize films of opponentsgames, to have his games broadcast onradio. During the 1930s he lobbied suc-cessfully for league rules that enhancedscoring capabilities which enhanced thepopularity of the game. He was instrumen-tal in creating the T-Formation, which ledto the Bears dominating the 1940s. Hedrafted the first African-American playerand had the first African-American quar-terback in the league. And when WorldWar II threatened to close the league down,he was instrumental in keeping it going. At the same time, he served in the SouthPacific with the Navy from 1943-45.

Halas remained in the game he loved, onand off, through 1981. As a coach, owner, manager and player, his belovedBears teams won six NFL titles, threeother divisional titles and finished second15 times. Only six of Halas’ 40 teamsfinished below the .500 mark. The ProFootball Hall of Fame, located poignantlyin Canton, Ohio, is located on a streetrenamed George Halas drive. Halaspassed away in 1983, but unlike so manyvisionaries, he lived to see his vision ofprofessional football become the centerof American sporting life.

THIS WEEK IN AMERICAN HISTORY

AMERICAN PATRIOT 15

2004.TV talk-show host Oprah Winfrey made history of a kind, giving a brand-new Pontiac

G-6 sedan worth nearly $30,000 to everyone in her studio audience: a total of 276

cars in all. Oprah had told her producers to fill the crowd with people who “desperately

needed” the cars, and when she announced the prize mayhem ensued. It has been

described as “one of the great promotional stunts in the history of television.”
