MIAMI (Rueters) The so-called LibertyHead nickel, one of only five known of that
specific date and design, was sold " in spirited
bidding" to a private East Coast coin collector
in Orlando late on Thursday, said Greg Rohan,
president of Dallas, Texas-based Heritage
Auctions. The buyer wished to remain anony-
mous.
The $3,737,500 price for the five-cent coin in-cluded a 15 percent buyer's premium.
"It is probably the most famous United States
rare coin," Rohan said in a statement.
Once part of the coin collection owned by
Egypt's King Farouk, who was deposed in
1952, the Liberty nickel changed hands sev-
eral times and featured as part of the plot in a
1973 episode of the well-known CBS TV se-
ries "Hawaii Five-O."
The value of the rare coin, which was made at
the Philadelphia Mint with the Miss Libertydesign, crossed the million dollar mark in
2003.

When you hear theterm Ringman, does it conjure upthoughts of a per-son, ringside at a
boxing event.
Maybe someone
who manages the
water bucket, ring-

who rings the bell
signaling the startand end of each round.
If you are not that familiar with auctions then you
may be one with this picture in mind.

opportunity to represent the Tennessee Auc-
tioneers Association at the 2010 National Auc-
tioneers Association, International Auctioneers
Championship to be held in Greensboro, North
Carolina in July of this year. There, Ochs will
compete with champion auctioneers from
around the United States and some from other
countries.
Performing on the International stage, in front
of your peers is enough to make most of us a
little weak in the knees but Ochs is already ac-
customed to the national stage.
If you are a fan of Barrett Jackson and The
Worlds Greatest Collector Car Event in
Scottsdale, Arizona then you may have heard
his voice during one of the broadcasts shown
on cable TV. He also has worked the All amer-
ican Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus,
OH, the AQHA World Championships in
Oklahoma City, OK and the St.Joseph Benefit
Auction in Newton, NJ.
Ochs currently resides in Gallatin, TN with his
wife, Kelly and is an Auctioneer and the Mar-
keting Director for StanRich Auctions.
The job of a Ringman at an auction is one of
great importance. Not only to the auctioneer
but also to the persons interested in making a
purchase at the auction. This was recognized
by the National Auctioneer Association and in
turn by the state auctioneers associations mak-
ing way for Ringmen across the nation to com-
pete and display their considerable skills at a
higher level.
The first ever Ringman or Bid Assistant com-
petition was held in Nashville at the TAA Win-
ter Meetings this past December and the
winner was Jay Cash.
Jay, who is an auctioneer with Bob Parks in
Murfreesboro, comes from an auction family.
His dad James is a well know auctioneer in
Kentucky.
A bid assistant is an essential member of the
auction team. The bid assistant interacts di-
rectly with prospective buyers, answers ques-
tions concerning items for bid and auction
terms, encourages bidding and informs the
auctioneer of bids. Contestants were judged on
their interaction with the audience and their
ability to communicate bids to the auctioneer.

Everywhere you turn these days, celebrity
auctions are being held to raise funds for
worthy causes. It may be clothing worn in
Dreamgirls to benefit the VH1 Save the
Music Foundation or a pair of larger-than-
life autographed legs signed by Mariah
Carey for The Fresh Air Fund. Whatever
the cause, celebrities are putting their
name on items because the fanfare it gar-
ners brings a higher selling price.
Some of the more popular
celebrity auctions in recent
years have helped those af-
fected by natural disasters,
including Hurricane Katrina
in 2005 and the Indonesia
tsunami in 2004.
Hurricane Katrina Relief
One of the costliest and
deadliest hurricanes in his-tory, Katrina devastated
much of New Orleans,
Louisiana and several areas
of Mississippi and Florida
on August 29, 2005. Nearly
80 percent of New Orleans
was under water and close to
2,000 people died. Tens of thousands were
left homeless. Celebrity auctions to bene-
fit this disaster included:
*Jamie Foxx held a party and auction that
raised more than $600,000 for relief ef-forts.
* Matthew McConaughey sponsored an
eBay auction of his 1971 Chevy Corvette
-- a Mediterranean Blue Stingray. It sold
for $61,600.
* Pamela Anderson and Stella McCartney
donated personal items for an auction to
raise money for pets caught in the hurri-
cane.
* Paris Hilton and actor Colin Farrell were
on the auction block for an event spon-
sored by Foxx. Farrell went for $20,000
and Hilton received a bid of $200,000.
Tsunami Relief
On December 26, 2004, an earthquake in
the Indian Ocean off the coast of Indone
sia created a wave of tsunamis that killed
ore than 175,000 people and left thousands
without homes. Cities in Indonesia, Sri
Lanka, India and Thailand were destroyed
in seconds. Fund-raisers to help this cause
included:
* The Tonight Show host Jay Leno auc-
tioned a Harley-Davidson motorcycle
signed by various celebrity guests. Thisraised $760,095.
* Ellen DeGeneres spon-
sored an eBay auction for a
car donated by Toyota, rais-
ing more than $31,000 in
tsunami relief. She also
raised more than $1 million
for the relief effort by spon-
soring different companies
on her talk show.
* Sirius radio held an eBay
auction rallying top athletic
memorabilia. Athletes in-
cluded:
o Lance Armstrong
o Kerri Walsh
o Tony Hawk
o Kelly Slater
Many celebrities use their "star power" to
help raise funds for charities. They include
children's hospitals, families at-risk and
public school programs, to name a few.
Numerous worldwide children's charities benefit from Clothes Off Our Back:
Celebrity Clothing Auctions. This non-
profit organization hosts celebrity auctions
that showcase celebrity attire. It was
founded by actress Jane Kaczmarek and
actor/philanthropist Bradley Whitford. In
March 2007, Clothes Off Our Back will
feature dresses worn in the Max Factor
Salutes Hollywood Fashion Show, which
was held March 15, 2007. They include
celebrity attire worn by:
* Carmen Electra
* Kristin Cavallari* Kristen Bell
* Denise Richards
* Olivia Wilde
* Allison Sweeney

Sports memorabilia collectors, set your calen-

That's the day bidding online will begin on
Alex Rodriguez's 500th home run ball, The As-
sociated Press reported Tuesday night.
The company in charge will be SCP Auctions,
which also sold the balls Barry Bonds hit for
his 755th and 756th home runs -- to tie and sur-
pass Hank Aaron's all-time record. According
to the company's Web site, those two balls sold
for $186,750 and $752,467, respectively.
Rodriguez's 500th home run, hit Aug. 4, 2007,
was recovered at the old Yankee Stadium by a
college student named Walter Kowalczyk. The
Yankees' third baseman hit the milestone
homer at 32 years old, making him the
youngest in baseball history to reach the feat.
Through 16 years in the big leagues, Ro-
driguez's 583 home runs makes him tied for
eighth on the all-time home run list with Mark
McGwire, who, like A-Rod did last spring, re-
cently admitted to using performance-enhanc-
ing substances as a player.
