Houston memorabilia already poised for theauction block

A black velvet dress that belonged toWhitney Houston and a pair of earringsshe wore in the 1992 film The Body-guard will be sold to the highest bidder next month.

Celebrity auctioneer Darren Julien saidSunday the pieces and other Houstonitems became available after thesinger's unexpected death on Feb. 11and will be included among a long-planned sale of Hollywood memora-bilia such as a cane of CharlieChaplin's, Clark Gable's jacket fromGone With the Wind and Charlton He-ston's staff from The Ten Command-ments.

Julien said celebrity collectibles oftenbecome available after their name-sakes die.

It proves a point that these items, they're an investment, Julien said. You buy items just like a stock. Buy atthe right time and sell at the right time, and they just increase in value.

But could it be too soon to profit fromHouston's death? She was only buriedon Saturday.

It's a celebration of her life, Julien

said. If you hide these things in fear that you're going to offend someone her life is to be celebrated. These itemsare historic now that she passed. Theybecome a part of history. They shouldbe in museums. She's lived a life andhad a career that nobody else has ever had. Houston is someone who'sgoing to maintain a collectability, hesaid. For people who are fans of Whit-ney Houston and never would havehad a chance to meet her and never got to talk to her, these are items thatliterally touched a part of her life. Theyare a way to relate to her or be a partof her life without having known her.

The singer's floor-length black dress isvalued at $1,000 (U.S.) but likely to col-lect much more. The same is true for the vest she wore in The Bodyguard, listed at $400, and the faux-pearl ear-rings that start at $600.

Houston fans and other collectors canbid online, by phone or in person dur-ing the Hollywood Legends auctionon March 31 and April 1. Lots will beshown during a free public exhibitionbeginning March 19 at Julien's Auc-tions in Beverly Hills, Calif., just blocksfrom the Beverly Hilton Hotel, whereHouston died at age 48.

HYDE PARK, NY (WABC) -- It was anightmare scenario for one DutchessCounty homeowner. His house sold outfrom under him all for an unpaid tax billworth just a few hundred bucks. Wasthe county justified or is this simply anexample of government run amuck?

Last year, Marc says Dutchess Countysold his weekend home of 25 yearswithout his knowledge. All because heforgot to pay a three-year-old tax billcharged by his local fire departmentworth just $416.

"I was just totally stunned," Dr. Sperosaid, "We owed $416 in fire taxes andthey took the house and sold it for $93,500." Marc says his first warningwas an eviction notice posted on hishouse's front door, giving him just 10days to vacate. "We were scared todeath and we had no idea what wasgoing on," Dr. Spero said. Marc says hecould be kicked out any day from hisprized Bauhaus-inspired house that'sbeen his weekend refuge for almost aquarter century. This house is really amember of my family," Spero said.Marc's staved off eviction by filing alawsuit against the new owner andDutchess County.

The new owner had no comment, andthe county contends it notified Marcproperly of his home's pending auctionby posting a sign in front. But Marcquestions whether the sign was evenon his land, or instead on an empty lotnext door. "It never even occurred tome. I thought someone had bought thelot next door," Spero said.

The county also said it mailed a dozencertified letters to his house, but sinceSpero's only there on weekends theywere declared undeliverable. Other let-ters went to his mortgage company, butthe county mis-addressed the mailingto Chase Mortgage, sending three let-ters to Edison, New York, not New Jer-sey.

The process of evicting Dr. Spero andhis wife from their home has beenstopped because he is challenging theconstitutionality of the sale in court. Asfor the county, it also said it never knewthis was Marc's weekend home.

The county says his home is listed inits records as his primary residence.

County seizes, auctionshome over $400 tax bill
