million on ComicConnect's website. That issue features the debut of Su-perman and originally sold for 10 UScents.

In February 2010, Heritage Auctions inDallas sold a rare copy of DetectiveComics No.27, which featured thedebut of Batman, for $1,075,500. Fish-ler said the same issue had initially soldfor just $2500 in 1985 and for $140,000in 2000.

"Over the last decade it has become arather legendary copy because it wasin the hands of a collector and no onethought he would sell," Fishler said."The owner came up with a figure thathe didn't think anyone would pay, and itwas paid."

"Amazing Fantasy" No.15 has longbeen prized by collectors because ofSpider-Man's debut. It has beenreprinted and made available as ahard-cover, too.

The cover, drawn by Jack Kirby and

Steve Ditko, shows Spider-Man clutch-ing a villain in one arm and swingingfrom his web with the other. It originallysold for 12 cents.

Writer Stan Lee and Ditko co-createdthe web-slinger and his alter ego, theawkward but educationally gifted PeterParker, who was bitten by a radioactivespider.

"Spider-Man is one of Marvel's flagshipcharacters so, yeah, I'd say 'AmazingFantasy' is very important," said Mar-vel Comics editor-in-chief Axel Alonso."Funny thing is, the series - which wasformerly titled 'Amazing Adult Fantasy'- was scheduled for cancellation beforeissue 'Amazing Fantasy' No.15 hitstands. It ended up being one of Mar-vel's highest sellers at the time, andpaving the road for the 'Amazing Spi-der-Man' series that's run monthly eversince."

It also helped pave the way for Spider-Man adventures on the radio, televisionand the movie screen.

Eric Clapton’s benefit guitar auction raisesover $2 MillionCollectors, fans and musicians from allcorners of the globe gathered at Bon-hams New York to bid for 138 lots, made up of 75 guitars and 55 ampsfrom Clapton's personal collection.

Memorabilia including Clapton'sthree-piece "stage suit" made bythe late fashion designer GianniVersace was also included in thesale.

$2.15 Million was raised for TheCrossroads Centre in Antigua - adrug rehabilitation center set up bythe reformed addict Clapton in 1998 .

Despite being considered an auctionfor fans, with the most expensive gui-tars estimated to fetch no more than$26,221, strong bids, notablyfrom a Russian collector, pushed sale prices wellbeyond expectation.

A 1948 hollow-body Gib-son guitar generated thehighest bid: valued at be-tween $17,000 to$25,000, it sold for$72,287. According to the orig-inal catalogue de-scription, Claptonsaid that it "had plentyof use and would havebeen used on the bluesalbum".

The biggest surprise of the sale wasthe 1979 Danny Ferrington three-quar-ter-sized guitar valued at between$265 to $440, which sold for $36,850.

The guitar was accompanied by

a hand-written and signed note fromguitar maker Danny Ferrington statinghe built the "tipple size" guitar for Eric

Clapton in 1979. It said: "Ericloved this guitar. He said he likedthe look of carrying it around andgetting off an airplane with it. I al-ways said they were professionalquality toys."

Jon Baddeley, worldwide head ofcollectables at Bonhams said: "Ithas been a privilege and an honourworking on this excep tional saleand being associated with one ofthe most iconic living musicians,Eric Clapton. "Arguably the great-est guitarist of all time, Eric Clap-ton inspires an ever-expanding fanbase, many of whom made thejourney to Bonhams in New York

over the past few daysand joined us for this re-markable auction.

"We were delighted toplay our part in raising

funds for The Cross-roads Centre, acharity with a noblemission and a causethat remains veryclose to Eric's heart."

Guitar highlights in-cluded a 1948 Gib-

son L-5P, estimated at$20,000-30,000, that

sold for a staggering$82,960; and a 2005 Zemaitis S22BP3S, estimated at $12,000-18,000,which sold for $75,640. The top amp ofthe sale was a pair of 1997 FenderTwin Amps, estimated at $9,000-12,000, sold for $42,700.

80 Times EstimateFor ChinesePlaqueAuction News Network- A Taiwanesecollector paid an astounding $94,800for a Chinese celadon jade oval plaque, over 80 times the $1,500 high estimateit had carried at Clars Auction Gallery’sMarch sale in Oakland.

It was only the latest example of the es-calating prices Asian buyers are payingfor items reflecting their heritage. Clars’President, Redge Martin, called thesale “astonishing.”

It is charred and its contents are un-drinkable, but its rarity is extreme: a sin-gle bottle of Lowenbrau rescued fromthe wreck of the Hindenburg has sold atauction for $16,000.

Bruce Springsteen’s ‘57Chevy to sell at auction. The orange-flame painted 1957 Chevyconvertible that Bruce Springsteenbought after he signed with ColumbiaRecords in 1972 is expected to sell fornearly $400,000 in an online sale cur-rently underway at the Rock and RollPop Culture Auction.

Springsteen sold the car– the inspira-tion for “Born to Run” and “ThunderRoad”—for $2,000 in 1976 because itwas too conspicuous. The auctionends on March 26.

Both Time and Newsweek featured theChevy in their 1975 Springsteen coverstories. Reportedly, Springsteen alsowrote “Racing in the Streets from1978’s “Darkness on the edge of Town”while at the wheel.
