2014 MEETING PROGRAM
Walter E. Washington Convention Center2-5 December 2014
Federal Health In Transition
Welcome to Washington, DC for the Annual Continuing Education Meeting sponsored by AMSUS,
The Society of the Federal Health Professionals.
For the past 110 years the AMSUS Congressional Charter to advance the knowledge of the federal
health professionals, has put us in a unique position to provide some of the most valuable learning
experiences to the men and women who serve our great country.
Our meeting this year is very different from past events. We instituted an abstract submission
process for presentations and have received a phenomenal response. The selected abstracts were
organized into 7 focused multidisciplinary tracts. We hope you enjoy the presentations and the
new format. Please take time to review all the information inside the covers of this program.
AMSUS meetings are a great place to network with peers and industry partners across the fed-
eral sector. Additionally, the opportunity to meet, form relationships and share knowledge with
medical professionals from nations all over the world is invaluable. We hope you take the fullest
advantage of the networking opportunities throughout the week.
AMSUS is committed to meeting the needs of our members and partners, and constantly seeks
to better meet those needs for the Federal Health Professionals of the XXI Century. Please let me
know how AMSUS can better serve you in the future.
Thank you for your support and participation in this year’s program.
Sincerely,
MICHAEL L. COWAN, MD, FACP
Vice Admiral, MC, USN (Retired)

WOUND CARE SKILLS LABS
This workshop will provide the learners with discussion of the design, sci-
ence, mechanism of action and clinical evidence supporting the use of a two
layer compression system for treatment of venous leg ulcers, chronic edema
and lymphedema. Selection options for periwound skin protection and
dressing considerations will be discussed. Selection criteria for compression
therapy will be reviewed with a demonstration and hands on practice oppor-
tunity of the variety of application techniques that allow customized com-
pression therapy. Bandage troubleshooting, tips and tricks will be discussed.

Iron BowIron Bow Technologies, in conjunction with Aranz Medical, will be showcasing the Silhouette Wound Care Camera. Silhouette is a non-invasive, 3D measurement, imaging and documentation system that provides precise healing trend information along with comprehensive wound surveillance support.
Silhouette’s wound imaging system consistently measures the area, volume and depth of wounds with an easy to use one-click device that uses laser lines for positioning and optimum focus. Silhouette software creates an accurate 3D model, recording standardized notes stored on a secure system and recording data into patient records.
JoernsJoerns RecoverCare is revolutionizing healthcare through an industry-leading suite of advanced patient care products, technologies, services and programs, and has served the Veterans Health Administration system for over 15 years. One of these technologies is the Dolphin Fluid Immersion Simulation® (FIS) advanced therapy system. Dolphin FIS is a therapeutic support surface that creates a level of immersion and buoyancy sufficient to alleviate the forces of gravity to such an extent as to maintain organ tissue perfusion and prevent skin injury related to pressure and shearing forces that compromise blood flow. The technology is used to prevent pressure ulcers and to advance the healing of pressure ulcers (stage III or stage IV), surgical flaps, skin grafts, burns, and other complex wound conditions.
Dolphin FIS offers:• Improved clinical outcomes – faster healing and sustained prevention• Better clinician ergonomics – easier, less traumatic transfers and repositioning• Enhanced patient comfort – improved pain management promotes greater patient compliance
FEDERAL HEALTH IN TRANSITION | AMSUSMEETINGS.ORG 14
WC
The Dolphin FIS software uses complex algorithms, a microprocessor and sophisticated dynamic pressure waveform analysis to precisely adjust the density of the surface for the unique anatom-ical features of the patient. It continuously monitors the patient’s weight, 3D surface area and movements to automatically calculate the exact settings to effectively manage the pressure of the patient’s body in the medium. This results in individualized immersion of the patient based on their specific characteristics and movements creating a near neutrally buoyant state on the support surface.
Designed to save Dolphins, proven effective for patient care• Heals wounds faster than standard surfaces• Covers the full age spectrum and care continuum• Automatically adjusts to each patient’s weight, surface area and repositioning• No staff intervention required• Fits all existing bed frames

MiMedxMiMedx® is an integrated developer, processor, and marketer of patent protected biomaterial prod-ucts and tissues, including EpiFix® and AmnioFix®. Both products provide a biologically active ma-trix and growth factors for cellular ingrowth, and they reduce inflammation and reduce scar tissue formation for enhanced healing. EpiFix® dehydrated Amnion/Chorion Membrane Allograft implant is a tissue regeneration graft for the treatment of acute and chronic wounds, and it is also available in powder form. AmnioFix® dehydrated Amnion/Chorion Membrane Allograft offers barrier and reconstructive options for surgical procedures. Both EpiFix® and AmnioFix® products are processed using the proprietary PURION® Process, a unique approach that provides an easy to use allograft stored at ambient temperatures. The allografts are easy to handle and apply, and they have a 5 year shelf life at ambient temperature storage. PURION® processed allografts are minimally manip-ulated, safe and effective, and more than 200,000 implants have been distributed to date.
Objectives: 1. Describe the source for MiMedx products
2. Be able to state the basic difference between EpiFix and AmnioFix; Name one clinical applica-
tion for each.
3. Name and demonstrate at least one of the key application steps and orientation of EpiFix to
maximize clinical outcomes.
4. Cite one evidence-based application of EpiFix as described in published clinical data.
