ABSTRACT
Umakaapa, Juney Faisal.2016. An Analysis on Jargon used by Pusdik Arhanud Soldiers in
the War Training. English Language Education Department, University of Muhammadiyah
Malang.
Keywords: Sociolinguistics, Jargon, Soldiers, Pusdik Arhanud
Sociolinguistics is the study related to the language and society. In Sociolinguistics, we
know the concept of language variation such as register, accent, dialect, prestige, slang, jargon etc.
In this study, the writer focuses on jargon used by Pusdik Arhanud soldiers in the war training in
terms of the jargons used by the Pusdik Arhanud soldiers in the war training, the contexts of jargon
used by the Pusdik Arhanud soldiers in the war training, the reasons behind the use of jargon by
the Pusdik Arhanud soldiers in the war training.
This study used qualitative descriptive approach because the writer described the jargon
used by Pusdik Arhanud soldiers in the war training, the meanings and also the possible reasons
of using those jargons. As the data, the writer used the utterances which contain jargon when the
soldiers talked among each other in the war training. Furthermore, the writer utilized observation
and interview as methods to gain the data.
After doing observation and interview, the writer found nine jargons used by Pusdik
Arhanud soldiers in the war training such as arah jam 3 mu (the angel of the troops which is
displayed by clockwise direction), sasaran hilang (target lost), kekuatan (question about the
troop’s readiness), siap 55 (the troops are ready), pasukan pada pos (stand in their own weapons),
petunjuk ndan (asking the commander’s instruction), garuda (the troop’s name), muatan (checking
the enemy existence), bongkar (destroy). They used jargon for certain reasons. Firstly, they did
not want they talk to be known by other people who do not belong to the community. Secondly,
they used jargon to build their own identity. The last, they want their community to have different
characteristics from the others. They also used the context of these nine jargons in the real war
situation. As the result unveiled, the writer hopes this study can provide many insights for future
researcher to have a better research. Subsequently, they are expected to be able to explore and
investigate some other phenomena of jargons in any speech community. Consequently, the next
researchers can occupy this study for an additional source to support their research about jargon.
