SCHEDULED SERVICINGThe STG range of all Electric actuators used with analogue or digital control units have been extremely reliable in their duty, but do require regular maintenance with scheduled overhauls.
Too often, due to the governors reliability, customers run and run the electronic governor until there is a major problem and sometimes an actuator seizure.
Governor Technical Solutions offers a comprehensive, cost effective answer to the customer by offering to supply a regular overhaul service using readily available service exchange parts, or overhaul a returned part.

GOVERNOR ACTUATORSThe STG all electric actuator is a very reliable part of the governing system and also is a very important part in the control of the engine fuel injection system.
The actuators reliability depends on the following:
• Installed position of the actuator on the engine
• The temperature of the actuator under running conditions
• The power supply of the driver to the actuator
• The Fuel Rack linkage from the actuator to the engine

TESTING
All returned parts are completely stripped down and tested with a fault report and quotation generated and sent to the customer for their acceptance before any work is undertaken.
In general, If a part is returned to the OEM, they often say that the unit is beyond economical repair and try to sell the customer a new part.
This is often unacceptable to the customer and we, at GTS ,do not only offer a repair, but a full overhaul to bring the part back to the original zero hour condition with a full 12 month warranty.
Parts are comprehensively tested prior to despatch, with specialised equipment, such as speed governor closed loop simulators and precision positional feedback closed loop high current drives.
Regular servicing is essential to eliminate breakdowns and engine downtime. It seems to be the norm that governor spares are no longer looked upon as being an essential part of installations. Because of this, GTS offers an essential service of holding exchange spares for immediate supply on a world wide basis.
The normal service interval for the STG range of actuator recommended by GTS is as follows:

When received by GTS, the actuators are tested, inspected and a report is written for the customer.
With an agreed purchase order, the actuators are completely stripped, cleaned and rebuilt with parts replaced to the original manufacturers specification.
The units are completely tested, with recalibrated feedback system, packed and shipped to the customers agreed site address.

The controller is connected to the actuator by a military style connector which allows the actuator stator coil and new feedback system to have a 1m cable to the new controller.
The APU-02 electronics has a new cable connection utilising the existing flat 6 pin connector, thus allowing a total integration of a valve overhaul with the old valve installation.
The set-point to the controller is a 4 - 20mA signal, setting 0 - 70° actuator travel with a full three term PID positioner control. If the actuator/valve is blocked for more than 20 seconds, a reduced current limit will cut in.
Various versions of the positioner electronics are available for a Voltage, PWM and Current set-point.
There is also as standard a position output of 0.5v to 4.5v for the 0 - 70° actuator travel.
The complete overhaul and retro-fit of the new controller can only be possible if the old Turbo-Bypass valve is returned with its external plug connection intact.
F - SERIES VALVEThe F-Series Valve has an integrated digital card at the rear of the actuator and is sealed via a plastic case.
Returned actuators have had several problems but the easiest and best solution is to remove the card, overhaul the complete mechanical valve and install a new feedback system and connect to a standard analogue GTS Positioner APU-02.
This unit will take either a current, voltage or PWM input and position the actuator.

WOODWARD TURBO BYPASS OVERHAULS
The Woodward Flo-Tech Turbo-Bypass valve is made with integrated control electronics and actuator position feedback system.
It is difficult overhauling this type of actuator due to the electronics being completely potted with a hardened compound in the rear of the case.
However, Governor Technical Solutions can overhaul the mechanical valve and actuator and upgrade the positioner electronics by removing all the existing internal electronics and feedback system and adding a more precise feedback arrangement with an external electronic controller.
INTEGRATED ACTUATOR AND VALVE OVERHAULS FOR DEUTZ AND PEERKINS ENGINES
The latest Perkins and Deutz engines use the Heinzmann STG2040+DK and STG2080 +DK integrated valves with differing valve sizes and these actuators are a based on a permanent magnet rotary torque actuator with no gears to output the drive shaft. The older Dorman/Perkins engines use the Woodward/Deltec valves.
A non contact feedback system is used and required an ‘H’ bridge 4 quadrant drive to position the actuator.
Comprehensive overhauls are offered by GTS for this actuator and can be completed within the standard 48 hour service.
PANDAROS PDC-30 POSITIONER
The Pandaros PDC30 positioner is used to position any of the Heinzmann range actuators from STG6-01 up to the high torque units STG40-01.
The positioner will accept a 4-20mA , 0-5V or PWM signal to relate to 0-100% output shaft position.
Fitting of the control unit can be in any position or attitude relative to the engine and has the advantage of being able to be mounted away from engine in a remote or local control panel.
Another major advantage is that the controller is that it drives the actuator motor in both directions at full rated torque and has a closed loop positional drive allowing high torque to overcome linkage friction over he fuel rack range 0-100%.
The high torque comes with the advantage of low actuating running current. On a Jenbacher gas engine, the STG40-01 running current is normally no more than 2.1 amperes at steady state rated speed.

The Actuator Test and Calibration Unit ACTU- 03 is designed to be used with the following Heinzmann actuator ranges:
Geared Actuators Type: STG6, STG10. STG16, STG30 and STG90
Rotary Solenoid Actuators Type: STG2010, STG2040, STG2080 and STG2120.
The ATCU-03 is an actuator feedback calibration unit and test positioner to drive various Heinzmann actuator ranges from the rotary STG2010 to STG20120 direct drive actuators to the conventional geared motor driven STG6 through to the STG40.
