The National Coal Strikes: The Miner Emerges Artist Boardman Robinson drew ‘The Miner Emerges’ in response to the National Coal Strikes in 1912 in the United Kingdom and the United States. This drawing appeared in The Masses, a magazine for the working classes, in June 1912. Suffragee Emmeline Pankhurst arrested Emmeline Pankhurst, leader of the women’s suffrage movement, is arrested outside Buckingham Palace in 1914 when trying to deliver a petition to King George V.
