EXALTED RULER’S MESSAGE

Dear Brother and Sister Elk:

As this year’s Holiday season quickly approaches, I wish all

of you, and your families, a most Joyous Christmas, and a

Safe and Productive New Year. I hope you will be with friends

and family celebrating the holidays? But, at this time of the

year, I also hope we can all remember those who are less

fortunate in our community, - those among us who may need

our help and support. We should do what we can as Elks,

and always practice Charity and Brotherly Love.

I sincerely thank everyone for their continued support of our

lodge, as without your support we would cease to exist.

Without a strong membership, we could not support all of our

Youth, Scholarship, and Veterans’ Programs.

Be proud to be an Elk! I urge all of you to spread the word

that we are a Charitable Organization, and not just a lounge or social club.

Be safe, - Be happy, and - Be Joyous this holiday season.

Fraternally, Thomas R. O’Brien

YOU SPOKE and WE LISTENED

We Have a “New & Improved”

MONDAY NITE SPECIAL DINING MENU

We have revised our “Monday Nite Special Dining Menu,” and

it now includes some “Healthier Menu Choices” such as Salads. Additionally, we have added some “Heartier” Comfort Food Items for the Chilly Winter Months.

Our members spoke, and we listened! We even changed our serving hours so those members who need to get home a little earlier during the Winter months, when it gets dark earlier, can

now do so.

Be sure to stop by Your Lodge and check out the new menu which will be served every Monday Nite starting December 1,

2014, now from 4:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Our Menu is served

in a Clean, Friendly atmosphere. Enjoy!

Dear Ladies,

November and December are months

that remind me of the commitment for

which our organization stands, and the

dedication of its members. We have lost

a few members this past year, and our

active members have always been

there to fill the void. I am asking our inactive members

for any assistance they may be able to provide us

throughout our busy holiday season. Please contact

me at (910) 755-5666 if you can assist your sister

members of the Auxiliary. Your help will be greatly

appreciated.

November was another busy month with the huge

collection of socks and coats we provided for “Comfort

Socks” and to our local churches. Thank you ladies!

Our community will be a bit warmer thanks to your

generosity. On November 11th, we assisted another

Veteran with a generous donation to assist him in his

hardship. This generosity was partnered with a

donation from our Veteran’s Affairs Committee (VAC),

which will provide heat and electricity throughout the

winter months. Thank you to the VAC for your

generous donation.

December is always a busy month with our Annual

Christmas Holiday Fair scheduled for December 6,

2014 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Elks Lodge.

Local crafters and vendors will provide wonderful

Christmas gifts, while the Ladies Auxiliary will provide

homemade soups, cookies, and pastries. Our “White

Elephant” table provides a little something for

everyone at a great price, always negotiable. (See our

Event Flyer)

On December 11th, the ladies will host a Christmas

party for Shallotte Assisted Living. We will be providing

gifts to be given out by Santa, - of course! We will also

have refreshments and be Christmas Caroling.

The holidays are brighter because of the generosity of

our members who give their time, dedication, and

commitment.

Our members work hard and need your support. We

will be holding nominations for the Executive Board in

January 2015. Please consider volunteering for a

position on the board. Your leadership is vital in

continuing our mission. You make a difference in the

lives of so many.

Fondly,

Peggy Haughey

President of the Ladies Auxiliary

Ladies Auxiliary of the Calabash Elks

On Tuesday afternoon,

December 16, 2014, our Lodge’s

Youth Activities Committee will

be partnering with the South

Brunswick Rotary Club to host a

Christmas party at the

Waccamaw School in Ash, NC.

In combination, we will be

hosting 40 children and their

families for dinner, games, presents, and a surprise

visit from the Jolly Old Elf himself! (AKA Lodge

Trustee, Joe Adams)

Volunteers are needed to help decorate the school

cafeteria on that date. If you are interested please

contact Juanita Adams, Youth Activities Chairperson,

at 910-579-5248 for the time and directions.

The North Carolina State Elks Association’s (NCSEA) Fall Convention was held at the High Point

Plaza Hotel-Conference Center on October 24-26, 2014 in High Point, NC. For those officers

and/or members from our Calabash lodge who may have attended a state convention in the past,

you understand the complexity, protocol, tradition, and conduct of business affairs which occurs

at a convention, but – for those of you who may not have ever attended a convention, I am taking

the time here to recap the event. Attendees obtain many benefits, as they learn how the State

Association can help local lodges comply with Grand Lodge requirements, and learn how the

Association can help them with their local efforts.

We were very honored to have our Grand Exalted Ruler (GER) John D. Amen and wife Marcia attend. Also

attending was our State Sponsor, Arthur “Jack” Frost and his wife Sharon, along with the Special Deputy Grand

Exalted Ruler John Boyd and his wife Ann, and our Grand Lodge Committeeman Ashley Buckwell and Linda

Whisnant.

Our team of State Representatives met the GER and his wife Marcia at the Airport in Greensboro, NC on Thursday

October 23rd. We were fortunate to have one of our members donate his services, and were able to have them

driven by limousine to the hotel in High Point. Later that evening, Vickie and I were able to entertain

approximately 40 invited Elks in our suite at the State Presidents social where the GER and wife were the

honored guest. This was followed by a VIP dinner that evening at the hotel.

We opened the convention on Friday, October 24th with a VIP breakfast and meetings of the State Charitable

Trust, followed by the Past State Presidents Advisory Board meeting, and the NCSEA Trustee meeting. Much

state business was handled at these morning meetings, followed by yet more meetings in the afternoon. While

these business meetings were being conducted, our State First Lady, Vickie Acton, escorted the VIP Ladies to

the Childress Winery for a tour and lunch. Our day ended with an Advisory Board Social followed by the Advisory

Board Dinner.

We opened on Saturday with an early breakfast, followed by the NCSEA Fall Business session, the agenda of

which featured two guest speakers. First, Mr. Britt Moore, a High Point City Councilman and current Elk member,

welcomed our organization to the city. Secondly, a young lady named Jordan Sims, a camper from Camp

Carefree, one of our state’s major projects. Jordan suffers from Spina Bifida, and is only able to walk with

crutches. Both speakers were very motivational. Our state officers and 27 state committee chairmen provided

reports. Our GER, John Amen provided some very motivational remarks. The morning session was adjourned

with an inspirational memorial service conducted by Salisbury Lodge #699. A luncheon, yet more business

meetings, dinner and dancing completed the second day of our convention.

We opened on Sunday with a Past Exalted Ruler (PER) guest breakfast. The PERs held their meeting while I

reconvened the NCSEA meeting. At the conclusion, gifts were presented to the GER and his wife Marcia, who

gave farewell remarks before the convention was adjourned.

As you can see, your state President and First Lady were kept busy preparing, hosting events, and taking care

of business, but - we had an outstanding time, and are proud you have given us this opportunity. Please make

plans to join us at the Spring Convention to be held next May 1-3, 2015 in Wilmington, NC.

Fraternally,

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

By Michael Trescak

“ELKS LODGE PARTNERS WITH TOWN & MERCHANTS FOR SAFE HALLOWEEN”

“Trunk-or-Treat” Event in Town Park Benefits Local Children On Friday evening October 31, 2014, in lieu of hosting their own traditional Halloween Party for local children, the Youth Activities Committee of the Calabash Elks Lodge partnered with the Town of Calabash and the local Merchants Association for a coordinated night of safe Halloween activities for the community’s children. The supervised event was held in the Calabash Town Park. Planned activities included a Movie and a Costume Contest. The Children, in costume, paraded around the park before parked cars, - their “Trunks” laden with Sweet Treats; Hence, the moniker “Trunk-or-Treat!” Juanita Adams, Chair of the lodge’s Youth Activities Committee, was instrumental in having the Elks participate in the event which also contributed to the event’s success. Bulk bags of candy were donated by lodge members during the entire month of October, and then – Ms. Adams sorted all the donations, preparing 200 amply-filled individual bags of diversified “Treats” handed out to the children on the night of the event. She also crafted the decorations. “Big Kid” Elks were present to personally hand out the Goodies and help judge the costumes. A Fun, and especially a Safe evening, was had by all, - Small Kids and Big Kids alike! The Calabash Elks Lodge, 2679, located at 937 Carter Drive, in Calabash, North Carolina, has been a local landmark of the area since 1984. With nearly 800 members, the lodge has become a cornerstone of the local community for the past 30 years. The Lodge has generously provided for many youth programs and events such as: Helping with funding for Summer Camp for Special Needs Children; Halloween and Christmas Parties for local disadvantaged children; Participation in the Elks National “Hoop Shoot” Basketball event; and - Providing College Scholarship Funds to help local teens start their lives with a College Education.
