French Immersion Wk The Ministry of Education supports French immersion programming in BC schools. Immersion refers to using French as the language of instruction & commu- nication in the school setting. French im- mersion students follow the same curriculum as all students in the province. 53,487 students are currently enrolled in a French immersion program, nearly 10% of BC’s public school population. The graduation completion rate in 2016-17 for French immersion students was 96%. Super blood blue moon eclipse During the early hours of Jan. 31, there will be a full moon, a total lunar eclipse, a blue moon and a supermoon. What is rare is that they’re happening all together on one day. The last such event happened in 1886. For North America, Alaska & Hawaii, the eclipse will be visible Wednesday, January 31 before sunrise. Overdose alert Interior Health is urging residents using or considering using drugs to re- consider or take steps to prevent over- dose in the wake of a recent increase in drug overdose deaths in the IH region. According to the BC Coroners Service, there were 7 suspected overdose deaths in IH from January 23-26. The exact causes of death will be confirmed by the BC Coroners Service once their investiga- tions are complete. Tips to help reduce the risk: • Don’t mix different drugs (including pharmaceutical medications, street drugs, and alcohol). • Don’t take drugs when you are alone. Leave door unlocked. Tell some- one to check on you. • Use less and pace yourself. Do testers to check strength – a small sample of a drug before taking your usual dosage. • Keep an eye out for your friends – stay together and look out for each other. • Carry a Naloxone kit and know how to use it. A list of locations to get a kit can be found on the Interior Health website or on the Toward the Heart website. • Recognize the signs of an OD: slow or no breathing, gurgling or gasping, lips/fingertips turning blue, difficult to rouse (awaken), non-responsive. • If someone thinks they may be hav- ing an overdose or is witnessing an over- dose, follow the SAVE ME steps and call 9-1-1 immediately, do not delay.
