ABOUT TONIGHT~ SHOW

Irving Berlin's most successful musical, Annie Get Your Gun, opened at the Imperial Theatre on Broadway on May 16, 1946, and ran for an amazing 1,14 7 performances with that greatest of Broadway stars, Ethel Merman, in one of her

by Glen J. Gilbert

most famous roles. The show was produced by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, and was originally supposed to have music by Jerome Kern, but when he passed away, they turned to Mr. Berlin, who then wrote one of his most famous scores. The national tour followed and brought another Broadway great to the role of Annie Oakley, Mary Martin. She had one of her greatest successes that gave her a national following prior to her South Pacific role th<l;t brought her stardom. The show was then made into a successful movie starring Betty Hutton, after Judy Garland had to be let go by the MGM brass for health problems. Hollywood, never a town to miss making-a buck, then built an entirely new movie musical around the title of one of Annie's most famous songs, "There's No Business Like Show Business," starring, of course, Ethel Merman, along with Dan Dailey, Donald O'Conner and an up and coming blonde by the name of Marilyn Monroe. Annie Get Your Gun has had many reincarnations since, including the 1966 201

h anniversary Lincoln Center version (the one we present tonight) that starred Merman herself, all the way up to the recent Broadway revival that won Bernadette Peters another Tony Award for Best Actress, and many rave reviews for her replacement, the incredible Reba McEntire. Following the success of Annie Get Your Gun, Mr. Berlin and Ms. Merman teamed up again in 1950 to create Call Me, Madam, another Broadway smash for the pair.

MURDER AT THE HOWARD JOHNSON'S

Coming May 3 rd is the hilariou Murder at the Howard Johnson's which is the fust time I'll be repeating a role for the fourth time here at Muny's. It certainly i one of my favorites to act in and if audience reaction of the past is any barometer, we all should have a fun time! This time out I U be joined by two of Murry's most talented and popular stars Natalie Canerday and Don Bolinger ( ee picture below). In the first act, the boyfriend and wife try to kill the husband, the second act the husband and wife try to kill the boyfriend and in the third act, the husband and boyfriend try to kill the wife. Needle s to say, it's a killer of a comedy!

THE IRISH ARE COMING!

It's just past St. Patrick's Day, but on May 31st Murry's is happy to bring a shiny shamrock of a new comedy to town, The Lucky O'Learys. The show has been a major success all over the country and you'll see why this warm and funny family comedy will please as you ease your way into summer.
