VI. Background Information• Setting: late 1930s-early 1940s in Ireland• Worldwide depression; many people had

economic troubles and couldn’t afford a lot of basic necessities

• 1840Ireland experienced a huge famine due to crop failure. Over a million died and another million left the country. Ireland was still suffering hardships from this famine.

• Strong Catholic identity• Typhoid Fever: infection spread through food

and water. Occurs in impoverished areas with poor sanitation systems. Can be fatal if not treated.
