From Rev Bryn… It was a great privilege to hear Pierre Kazadi’s story last Sunday afternoon at our Refugee & Migrant service. We were moved to hear his account of escaping war-torn Congo, then 5 years in a camp before finally being granted asylum in Australia. Even then Pierre had to leave his parents behind as they were ill. Now they are amazingly reunited in Melbourne. I pray that Pierre has a fantastic Father’s Day—he deserves it! Keep praying for refugees and asylum seekers!
Family Service?
For some time now I have been talking with our Parish Coun-
cil and Wardens about ways in which we can plan for growth
as we move into the new church. Among other ideas, we’ve
talked about the possibility of beginning a new style of liturgy
at St Mary’s aimed at families with younger children.
What is it?
The ‘Family Service’ would be designed around children’s
participation in the whole liturgy, incorporating art, craft,
drama, music and movement to reinforce the theme of the
day. The liturgy would take the form of a Power Point presen-
tation, thus dispensing with the need for books and paper.
The benefits of this style of service? A later start and a format that is more familiar to chil-
dren.
Increased participation and growth in faith and confi-
dence.
A relaxed service to welcome newcomers eg. Music
Play Group families
Diversifying what we offer in terms of worship styles
and hopefully connecting with a wider range of people.
Allows the earlier service to be ‘one’ thing rather than
trying to be ‘everything’ to everybody, ie. Traditional
Anglican Eucharist AND child friendly…
Past experience has shown that growing a new style of service
at a different time is an effective way of connecting with new
people, however it takes time and commitment. It is hoped
there would be a small group from the 9.30 congregation will-
ing to commit to the Family Service for at least 2 years while
it gets established.
When and How?
I have suggested to our Sunday School families that we might
start in late October or early November and that we aim for
10.30 or 11am on Sunday School days (1st & 3rd Sun).
If 10.30 works out to be best, this will mean that the 9.30 ser-
vice would have to consider meeting at 9am to allow enough
to prepare for the next service. I’m aware that changing ser-
vice times can be a bit of an upheaval but we need every-
body’s support and cooperation as we try to create opportuni-
ties for future growth.
Further Discussion
I’m suggesting we have a preliminary discussion after Church
next Sunday 9th September. I look forward to your input.
Please take the opportunity to speak to Parish councillors and
Wardens also if you won’t be there next week.
