Emphasis By Contrast: Value
When all the elements in the composition are dark a light form breaks the pattern and becomes the Focal Point.

Emphasis By Contrast: Shape
When the majority of the shapes are rectangular and angular, round shapes stand out to become the Focal Point.

Emphasis By Contrast: Scale
When all the elements are about the same size a larger or
smaller element is emphasized to become the Focal Point.

Emphasis By Placement
The placement of elements in a composition may function as a way to create Emphasis.
If many elements point to one area or element the viewers attention is directed there, and a Focal Point results.

Emphasis By Isolation
When an element is physically apart or isolated from the other elements in the composition the viewer’s attention is drawn to the isolated element.
Emphasis by Isolation may visually convey:
• Vulnerability
• Individuality
• Loneliness
• Physical or Emotional Isolation

Absence of Emphasis
Absence of Emphasis occurs when the composition has no specific elements that contrast or change and no area of interest.

Typefaces can be divided into two main categories:
Serif and Sans Serif.
Serifs comprise the small features at the end of strokes within letters.
The printing industry refers to a typeface without serifs as Sans Serif.

Leading
Leading is referring to the strips of lead once used to create space between lines of text in the days of mechanical typesetting.
In other words, leading is line spacing. It's purpose is to allow the designer to alter the density of blocks of text.

Kerning
Kerning allows you to manually adjust the space between any two characters.

This is Typographic Alignment. The types of Justification are:

Adobe InDesign is a page layout software program used to create printed works such as posters, flyers, brochures, magazines, newspapers and books.
Students in the ANM Program can utilize InDesign to create Self-Promotional pieces.

Visual Hierarchy
We use Visual Hierarchy to control what the viewer looks at first, then second, then third, etc.
We use all the Principles and Elements of Design when creating a page composition.

Where the InDesign Tools are found.
Selection ToolAllows you to select and move objects.
Direct Selection ToolAllows you to select, individual Anchor
Points and edit an object.
