Tarantino
is an American film director, screenwriter, producer, cinematographer and actor. In the early
1990s, he began his career as an independent filmmaker with films employing nonlinearstorylines and the aestheticization of violence.
He specialises in contrapuntal sound to emphasise the horror of what is happening on screen,
for example the use of the popular song Stuck in the Middle with You during the torture scene
ofReservoir Dogs, which is another example of binary oppositions. I plan to take inspiration
from this and have a strong soundtrack which emphasises the mood of the scene.

Annabelle ShepherdTextual analysis Pulp Fiction openingTarrintino is known for using powerful women in his films so its no surprise that the use of role reversal is used in the first scene. The scene
opens with a two shot of the man and the women sitting at a table in a typical American diner. This sets the scene. The man is the one talking
more, whereas the women reply which is straightforward simple answers which is normally a role allocated to males. Even though he is the one
proposing ideas about bank robberies, She is the one that seems to determine which crime they will actually commit. This is a controversial way
of portraying women because you wouldnt normally see women as the dominant character out of the two genders. The male is also sitting
slightly lower down than the women which shows a relaxed look but also means the camera has high shot of him showing the women to be more
dominated. The low angle close up of the waitress makes us think that later on in the film she may re appear as an important character. Thewomen rest her head on the table showing she may be losing interest in the idea of robbing a bank. But then the over shoulder shot of the male to
the women portrays she may have an interest in his ideas. But then at the end of the scene it seems like the males becomes more of a dominate
character as the women is on the same level on the character but is at a low angle on the male, this is most likely due to if there robbing the cafe,
the public will take more notice of a man with a gun then a women as of the stereotype of men are most likely to posses guns and knowing how to
use them. The lighting used is natural day which combined with the diner setting created the image that typical day is being carried out around them.
There ordinary dull clothes imply that they are ordinary people. However their conversation reveals that they are criminals. The blinds resemble
prison bars- this could be a connation for whets going to happen and if they will get caught. We can see this film was made a while ago as the
male is smoking in the restaurant. The background music is calm and typical to an American diner to show its a normal day. The noise of the coffee being poured into the cup
would be edited after as coffee pouring doesnt usually make that noise. When the male is talking about robbing the cafe the background has
been edited to be blurred and its at a point of view shot from the women this hints to the viewers that there not taking any notice of anyone
around them and hes is has started to take dominance in the scene.I dont think its obvious they are in a relationship with each other until they share a passionate kiss before they commence the robbery. This
suggests that minus there world of crime they have a normal loving relationship which is proven when they refer to each other as hunnybun
and pumpkin but it could also show that the only connection they have is through crime. The ending of the first scene is very powerful as it shows the spontaneous robbery they decided to commit after the conversation. As the man is
first to speak as the audience you presume that he will take the violent lead which he does as hes the one that jumps up first but out of
nowhere the women character comes across as the more aggressive and vicious character, than him when threatening people in the diner. This
again shows that the first scene goes against the typical stereotype Hollywood role for women who are normally protected by the hero looking
glamorous and beautiful in contrast being the one that the audience fear.In my opinion the opening sequence for pulp fiction is very powerful because it uses binary opposites to contrast the roles of men and women.
It also creates tension by using normal place where something out of the blue and sinister is about to happen.
Group Evaluation

27/80
Group Evaluation Megan: In my research, I found that popular crime/thriller directors used close up shots of the characters
faces in films such as Quentin Tarantinos Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Jonathon Demmes The Silence of the Lambs.
This shows the intense emotions of the characters, and consequently, the use of close up shots is now a
convention of the genre. Freeze frames and colour filters are also used, for example in Martin Scorseses
Cape Fear, to emphasise moments and to connote emotions such as rage (through the use of a red filter). The questionnaire showed that the target audience of men aged 15 17 liked crime thriller director
Quentin Tarantino the most, and therefore we shall use these techniques in our opening sequence because
they are iconic of his work and of the work by other popular directors. Additionally, Tarantino uses the non-
diagetic sound of heavy breathing over a black screen to create an enigma code in the opening ofKill Bill,
which is an extremely interesting technique which is highly successful in intriguing the audience. He also
uses his typeography of Friz Quadrata Bold, which we will use as well, because it has become iconic of the
crime/thriller genre. Maria: We asked the same number of males and females to take part in our questionnaire in order to get
fair results. The results gave us a greater insight into what an audience would like to see. Males between the
ages of 15-17 said that their favourite genre was crime which works perfectly as this is the genre our film
will be and we can create it with that age group and specific gender in mind as our target audience. We also
found out that people watch between 5-6 films per month. This shows us that our film will be viewed as
films are still very popular especially in the form of DVD's rather than online streaming.
Trailers and the storylines are what most attract people to films so we will need to make a trailer that will
show the storyline but not give too much away so that people need to watch it to find out what actually
happens in the film. Ambient/spooky music is the most popular background music to hear in a crime film
which will gives us some inspiration for our soundtrack.
We must also look at Quentin Tarantino's style within his past films in order to inspire us when making our
own film as he is the preferred director.
Our questionnaires showed that people's favourite film is I Saw The Devil, we will study this film to get ideas
and take inspiration from it when creating our own film.
Group Evaluation Cont

Group Evaluation Cont. Eleni: From my primary research, I have found that many directors of the crime/thriller genre (such as David Fincher in
Se7en and Martin Scorsese in The Departed) use white typography on a black background. This choice of typography is
bold and grabs the viewers attention, while mirroring the conventions of a crime genre and its simple style. Also, there
is a reference to Levi Strauss Binary Opposites, as the white against black could connote innocence vs evil, which are
both conventional of a crime narrative. The opening sequence of Sin City is filmed in black-and-white to emphasise its
sophistication.
I have found that Quentin Tarantinos focus on womens feet (evident from the close ups he had used in more than one
of his films) has now become iconic of a crime genre. He is also the most favoured director (found in our research
through questionnaires) of the genre, therefore we shall use this technique in our opening sequence to raise familiarity
and to intrigue the viewer. Womens body parts are also highlighted in the thriller genre, as some popular directors
(such as Christopher Nolan) use close ups of a womans hand.
The use of a gun as a weapon is evident in both the films that I have analysed as part of my Secondary Research (from
my Genre Grid and Textual Analysis). This prop is a popular convention of the crime genre, and plays a large role in thenarrative, as violence is stemmed from the use of these weapons, further reinforcing this genre.
Annabelle: From my primary research i have discovered that the target audience for our film will be male 15-
17year olds these age group said they preferred genre of film would be crime, which fits perfectly as our
film genre is a crime/thriller. The people we asked to fill out our questionnaire said they would wish to
hear ambient/spooky music in a crime film this gives us a good indication of what soundtrack we needto use. From our research Ive discovered that people watch 5 -6 films per month on DVDs meaning that
we should make the film into a DVD rather than put into onto the internet as to be used as online
streaming. In our questionnaire the people we asked favoured kill bill as one of their favourite crime
films. This film is directed by Quentin Tarantino from the top 10 director research i found Tarantino to
specialise in filming womens feet evident from the close ups in not only kill bill but several others off
his films. Quentin Tarantino was also the favourite director in our questionnaire meaning we will
incorporate Quentin Tarantinos technique in our film.

One wall is covered by largewindows, which allows lots ofnatural light in, increasing theverisimilitude of our openingsequence. This will also help defineit as part of the crime/thriller genre,
seeing as many films of this genreavoid the glossy look used more byrom-coms in favour of more dingyrealistic lighting.
The room has at least 4 available
plug sockets which we can use forthe microphone and the cameracharger if we need to, and thesesockets are all in easy access andclose to the centre of the room.

Contingency Plan
7/31/2019 Annabelle Shepherd Foundation Portfolio
65/80
Co t ge cy aA contingency plan is a just in case plan, if things do not work out how we expect them too. In this scenario, we are required to
be prepared to swap to a different activity or to adapt and edit our plans to make them work.
Locations: We are filming in various locations within school and, obviously, the education of other students and the convenience
of the teachers needs to be a main priority. For example, we plan to film part of our opening sequence in the Medical room,
but we will need to pause or potentially stop all together if someone comes in need of medical attention. This is why we willfilm during lesson time, but in case we do have to leave, we will change our activity to editing what we have already filmed,
or (providing we get permission), film in another location that would work equally as well. For example, we could use the
Connections room and use our set design to make it look like a hospital room or a doctors office. Additionally, we plan to
film in the editing suite (E21), but there will be other students working in there at the time. We will therefore film the scene
in the corner of the room so that we do not accidently film other students, and background noise should not be an issue
because there is very little dialogue in that location. However we will be efficient and quick so as to avoid disturbing other
people. Filming in exterior locations carries the risk of weather, so we will always check the forecast before beginning
filming. In the event of rain (or in some cases excessive sun when we require a more gloomy feel), we will swap what we
plan to film with another filming slot from our production plan. If this is not possible, we will swap it to editing what we havealready filmed or to working on the soundtrack.
Cast and Crew: We require a very small cast, and so we already have people to play each character. If for any reason, the person
assigned to play the character is unavailable at a particular time, we will postpone the filming until a more suitable time. If
this is impossible, due to deadlines or limited availability of the location, we will use a stand-in. If a member of the crew is
unavailable temporarily, due to an emergency, then the rest of the crew will continue as planned. In the unlikely event that
this is not possible, the activity will be postponed and swapped with something that can be done without the absent crew
member.
Camera and Tripod: We will book the equipment we need well in advance, but if something happens and we cannot use what weintended to, we will change activities to editing or soundtrack and use the camera and tripod at a different time. To ensure
that the cameras SD card does not run out of space, we will upload our footage onto the Mac computers, and delete it off
the SD card after each session of filming. This also means that our footage will already be on the computer when we need to
edit.

ANALYSIS OF EXISTING PRECAUTIONS (are the precautions effective; if not, why not?)
During the briefing of the editors, they can be instructed to point out all potential hazards as they enter the room. The effect of this is that they have a better understanding of what is dangerous inside the room and in the
future be able to instantly recognise these hazards whilst working in the editing suite. The fire exit sign above the opaque door could be improved by making it larger so it is more visible to people inside the room. In case of
an emergency people inside the editing suite should be briefed on how to use the fire extinguisher so that they are prepared to use it in case of a fire.
