MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
Following the opening of the W.F. Chisholm Branch at the Optimist Community Centre, the start of construction on the John Muir Branch on Mill Street in Sandwich Town and the forthcoming renovation of Budimir Branch on Grand Marais Road West in South Windsor, Windsor Public Library has started to write the next chapter of its illustrious history. In the Spring of 1894, a committee presented a petition with 542 signatures to Windsor City Council requesting that a public library be constructed and later that year, Windsor’s first public library opened at the corner of Chatham and Ferry streets. Since that time, Windsor Public Library has been a meeting place for people, ideas, learning and culture. For the past 125 years, Windsor Public Library has continually reinvented itself – to remain relevant to the community. Several years ago, the Windsor Public Library Board announced a comprehensive plan to refresh, renew and revitalize our library system. With the adoption of a facilities plan in 2015, it addressed library relevance in an ever changing society. The advent of new technology forced WPL to change but it continues to provide the traditional library experience - books, ideas, learning and culture – which it has harnessed with the many new and diverse technologies available. This is a period of unprecedented change for WPL as we focus on facilities renewal and construction across the entire system to better serve our community. The Windsor Public Library Board and City Council are to be congratulated for their foresight and leadership in crafting a forward-thinking renewal plan which will take our library system well into the 21st century. My vision calls for Windsor Public Library to be an amazing public place. With renewal underway across the system, we are well on the way to achieving this.

About Windsor Public Library
Library Aware is a free subscription service, available though the WPL web site, which generates personalized reading lists, newsletters and other forms of communication – all geared to customer choice. Newsletters link to our catalogue, making it easy to place a hold or get more information.
In 2017, we produced a series of Videos intended to improve access to our services. Viewers leaned about genealogy, the WPL mobile library, the Automotive Archives, the Tech Hub, Children’s Programming and more. Tutorials also helped with obtaining a library card, renewing items and placing holds online.
This is a unique database. As library staff answer customer questions about famous Windsor residents we post our research on-line to share with the community. It includes a list of all the great people who have called Windsor, Ontario home, including acclaimed award winning author Christopher Paul Curtis (Pictured, Left).

2017 HIGHLIGHTS
In 2017 Forest Glade Branch ‘morphed’ into a hub packed with cutting edge technology including an Oculus Rift Virtual Reality System which creates a VR environment for games, learning and exploration. Also available for public use are circuitry kits, app controlled robots and small, lightweight drones.
As Canada celebrated its 150th birthday, WPL commemorated the event with a Speaker Series featuring individuals with ties to Windsor. Participants included author and cartoonist Jeff Lemire, novelist Nino Ricci, urban columnist Shawn Micallef and CBC personality Jonathan Pinto. All were well attended and a tremendous success.

About Windsor Public Library
The WPL Local History Room received an Award of Merit from the Ontario Genealogical Society (OGS). It showcases the heritage and culture of Windsor as it exists today and in the past and is popular with local authors, historians and others interested in the Windsor and Essex County area.
Forest Glade Branch was home to more than 20 How To booths which were set up with the promise of teaching those in attendance something new in 10 minutes. Topics included looming, icing cupcakes, yoga/meditation, bicycle safety, financial fitness and simple magic tricks.
Following the opening of the W.F. Chisholm Branch at the Optimist Community Centre, the start of construction on the John Muir Branch on Mill Street in Sandwich Town and the pending renovation of Budimir Branch in South Windsor, WPL facilities plans are in full effect.
The Library Hubs Meeting Community Needs project concluded two years of work with an Action Plan and a review of achievements. The $200,000 grant enabled the development of a community hub of social service providers for those experiencing homelessness and poverty.

About Windsor Public Library
Construction on the W.F. CHISHOLM BRANCH (1075 Ypres Avenue), was completed well ahead of schedule and the newest library officially opened on Saturday, October 21 with a large crowd of customers and well wishers on hand. The new $2.46 million, 6,500 sq. ft. library is a 21st. century facility with a distinctly automotive theme. The total collection of 22,000 volumes includes print, audio, video and multilingual resources for children, teens, adults and seniors. It also houses public computers, WIFI, study space, cutting edge technical resources and the space to house the 4,600 volume WPL Automotive Archive. In partnership with Rose City Ford Sales Limited and the Chisholm family, it was announced early last year that the new library would be named the W.F. CHISHOLM BRANCH. City Council and the Windsor Public Library Board unanimously approved bestowing the honour on Mr. Chisholm, founder of Rose City Ford Sales Limited. City of Windsor Mayor and WPL Board Chair Drew Dilkens said the new branch is a truly fitting tribute to local automotive history. “Windsor is Canada’s Motor City and this new library taps into our heritage through innovative design and layout. The new South Walkerville facility will also ensure the community remains strong and vibrant and our automotive heritage isn’t forgotten. The Automotive Archive is a fascinating window into an important part of Windsor-Essex history and a must-see visit for everyone.”
