Dear Friends,

as many as 60,000 New Yorkers are homeless every night, including 23,000 children. We have a crisis in NYc. However, because of you, many homeless New Yorkers have hope.

care for the Homeless’ supporters and partners know that the demand for our medical, mental health, shelter and social services is often greater than we can meet. more than 70% of the 8,000 clients we served in 2013 were first-time clients of care for the Homeless, and many were newly homeless.

the impact you made in 2013 – and the investment you made in our services for the future – is critical in the fight to end homelessness. We are proud to be able to grow during these difficult economic times, and to have external reviewers attest that our organization is fiscally sound and well-managed.

We are humbled to share this year’s impact report even as we continue to expand programs to address the growing crisis:

• By co-locating medical and mental health clinics in homeless shelters and soup kitchens, we’re on the front lines reaching the most vulnerable.

• Susan’s place, our 200-bed shelter for medically frail and mentally ill women in the Bronx, offers a one-stop-shop under one roof, treating complex needs.

• our public policy and advocacy work, powered by our consumers, staff and Board members, is more important and effective now than ever. through the media, coalitions, on government-appointed workgroups, and through our consumers’ Speakers Bureau, we advocate for policies that can end homelessness.

our commitment to quality improvement was recognized this past year by the National committee for Quality assurance. care for the Homeless received Level 3 patient-centered medical Home recognition, the highest level of quality recognition awarded nationally. our generous supporters and advocates for our mission have much to be proud of.

homelessness in nYc has reached the highest levels since the Great Depression. care for the homeless programs provide over 30,000 health care visits to homeless men, women and children annually. Our clients live in severe poverty. the average length of stay in a homeless shelter in nYc is now longer than one year. housing instability, itself, impacts physical and mental health.

We’re on the front lines of a crisis, and because of you, there is hope. Our street medicine team is part of a group that reduced the number of people living on the streets of the Bronx by 72% over the last eight years. since we opened our shelter in 2008, over 900 women have moved from susan’s place into permanent housing. Less than 8% become homeless again.

Our mantra is simple: we meet homeless people where they are.

no homeless mother should have to choose between finding food for her family and getting asthma medication for her children. no homeless veteran should have to decide between registering for a shelter bed and attending a support group. by locating our services where homeless people seek food and shelter, we reduce barriers to care and save lives.

Our focus on the most vulnerable in nYc is the driving force behind our commitment to influencing public policy. As advocates, we fight to prevent and end homelessness. care for the homeless will continue to be a voice for the thousands of homeless individuals and families who still face obstacles to overcoming poverty and homelessness.
