AQAR 2011-12, Fakir Chand College, Diamond Harbour Page 9

In a meeting of the IQAC held on 14.12.2011 procedures for successful implementation of the

future plans which had been charted out in the last year’s AQAR were considered. A priority

list was prepared based on the ease of implementation. A rough estimation of

costs/expenditure involved also was done and the whole outcome was forwarded to the

Governing Body for taking necessary steps. The GB, in its meeting approved the procurement

of necessary items/equipments for implementation of the plans:

1. The new syllabi of the University of Calcutta were introduced in 2010-11 in the

Undergraduate level. In the science subjects, teaching of computer programming

and software at the 3rd

year had been included and stressed upon. Therefore,

keeping in view the syllabi of the 3rd

year batch of Physics, Chemistry &

Mathematics departments which are scheduled to enrol next year, i.e. in 2012-13

session, efforts have been made to procure new computers and refurbish the

existing ones. In order to utilize the new orientation of the science syllabi,

computer-aided classroom teaching has been encouraged, and installation of a

smart classroom in the Physics Department was planned.

In order to encourage research work and completion of Ph.D., two faculty

members, Prof. Debasish Mitra (Dept. of Pol. Sc.) and Prof. Indrani Dasgupta

(Dept. of Commerce), have been granted approval for extension of study leave

under the UGC-Faculty Development Programme. The ongoing UGC research

projects were monitored for timely completion. Several faculty members of

various departments were encouraged for knowledge enhancement by

facilitating Leave on Duty so that they could participate in National/State level

seminars/conferences / Refresher Courses and Orientation Programmes. Some

of them presented original research papers at such programmes. As a result,

several original research publications by college faculty members have appeared

in national and international journals and books. Proceedings of the National

Seminars organised by the departments of Bengali, Education & Chemistry, along

with external research contributions will be published soon. These publications

contain several good research papers authored by the teachers of the college

alongside those contributed by eminent scholars in the concerned disciplines.

2. As part of the ongoing activities of the college NSS units, around 528 students

participated in the NSS camps and programmes organized at both the

University and College levels. Our students earned the Best Activity Award in

one such programme. The members of the NSS team also participated in a

Winter Adventure Camp organized, by the University of Calcutta, at Narkanda

(H.P.) in March, 2012, which continued for 10 days under the guidance of the

Teacher-Coordinators.

Students participated in various extension & community service activities

under the NSS programme in nearby adopted village.

Analysis of student feedback

The college has its own mechanism of obtaining feedback from the students, guardians and alumni. The feedback from the guardians and alumni are obtained through interactions in meetings on different issues in some departments of the college. The suggestions or grievances, if any, are duly considered by the concerned departments as well as the college authority.

The feedback from the students is obtained by different departments of the college both formally (through structured questionnaire) and through informal interactions. Necessary changes as and when required are accordingly made to address their grievances, if any. The students of Undergraduate, Post-graduate and B. Ed sections are provided with a questionnaire with fourteen questions covering four broad criteria related to (i) Curriculum (ii) Teaching-learning and evaluation, (iii) Infrastructure & learning resources and (iii) Administrative issues of the college. They are then expected to rank their observations on each of the fourteen aspects through an ordinal scale by marking the achievements as bad, good, medium or excellent. The quantitative results thus obtained from the students’ feedback for the academic session 2011-12 are presented graphically through pie chart below. The questionnaire is also attached.

• It is clear from the graphs that more than three-fourths of the students have ranked the college either ‘good’ or ‘excellent’ in seven out of fourteen questions. Such ranking holds mainly with issues related to curriculum and teaching-learning-evaluation process. This is substantiated from the percentage distribution of ranks on questions pertaining to relevance of curriculum, teaching methodology, effectiveness of class lecture, cooperation of faculty members and average quality of class lecture.

• However, data show that there is scope of improvement in overall infrastructural facilities and administrative issues of the college as some students have ranked them ‘medium’.

Graphical results of the students’ feedback received:

Details of best practices

Best Practice 1

Financial Assistance for economically backward students

Goal: One of the main goals of the College is to promote higher education among the economically backward students of the region many of whom are first generation learners. Financial support to the needy students is the key factor to attain such goal and the College always tries its level best to achieve it. The Context: The College is situated in the South 24 Parganas district which is one of the most backward districts of West Bengal. Therefore, in our College most of the students come from economically backward families amongst whom a sizeable number belong to Below Poverty Level. The underprivileged people of the region send their wards to college for higher education with a dream of achieving happiness in life. In this context, it is a challenge for us to meet their expectations. We meet the challenge, at least partially if not fully, by providing financial support to them for pursuing academic excellence. The Practice: Implementation of the practice is done through the following three ways:

a) Concession of College Tuition fee for needy students; b) Monetary aid to students from the Student Aid Fund of the College; c) Financial Awards to toppers of different Departments in the College.

The College authority keeps option for waiving off monthly tuition fee of as many needy students as possible on the basis of their family income. In 2011-12, the College has given tuition fee concession to approximately 1500 students amounting to Rs. 405525.00. An Aid Fund account has been built up in the College by taking a fee of Rs. 10.00 from each student during his/her admission. From this account, each year a good number of students gets financial benefits for their study on merit-cum-means basis. In 2011-12, a total amount of Rs. 21200.00 has been distributed through this scheme. Moreover, meritorious students who are college toppers in University examinations are encouraged by awarding a number of prizes and scholarships each year during College Annual function. Many former teachers of this College have significantly contributed to build up this fund. The above mentioned financial support was provided by the college in addition to the students’ aid given by the State Government to 1043 students amounting to Rs. 1147930.00

Evidence of Success: The evidence of success lies in low drop-out rates together with high success rates in University results (average success rate was 85-90% in 2011-12 session), games and sports and a number of other fields.

Problems Encountered and Resources Required: Number of needy students is quite high. Therefore, it is very difficult to select the beneficiary. Moreover, resource mobilization is a constant matter of concern of the College authority to achieve the aforesaid goal and to extend it further so that more and more number of students, who are in dire financial need to continue their study, can get benefit of this programme.

Best Practice 2

Cultivation of Discipline and Values through NCC and NSS activities

Goal: Aim of this practice is to help and guide the students in cultivating values and discipline, in such programme where they participate in large number; as there is less scope of inculcating values and discipline while pursuing the regular syllabi.

Context: The College is situated in a semi-urban/rural area in the outskirts of the tiny city Diamond Harbour and the only metropolitan city Kolkata is about 50 km away. Being one of the biggest colleges in the district, it is catering to the needs of thousands of rural youths. Apart from imparting higher learning, this institute facilitates different types of activities for the students so that the people of the neighbourhood and in the adopted village get help and guidance from the organized group of students for their needs. At the same time the students also get scope to serve the people and the society at large, to gather work experience and to train themselves with values and discipline.

The Practice: This best practice come into being when the students serve the society and train themselves as NSS volunteers and NCC cadets. Volunteers of all four NSS units of the college participated actively in the Special Camping Programme and in different outreach programmes including observation of National and International Days throughout the year. The NCC cadets attended different camps and volunteered in traffic control in Diamond Harbour city and in Kolkata also during the “Ganga Sagar Mela” and the “Durga Puja” as a part of their community service.

Evidence of success: NSS volunteers have won the Best Activity Award at the university level. They participated in the Winter Adventure Camp organized by the University of Calcutta at Narkanda (H.P.) during March, 2012. They got an opportunity to experience the responsibility of undertaking different works jointly with the villagers at Narkanda. The NCC cadets also could cultivate discipline through the community services earmarked for them. This not only helped them in performing with excellence during camps and other programmes, it also made them responsible citizens of the future.

Problems encountered and resources required: NSS volunteers initially encountered the problem of working as a team. However, the Programme Officers fostered the team spirit amongst them and eventually they excelled. The NCC cadets also overcame the problem of controlling the crowd with the help of their Senior Under Officers and Teachers. For undertaking the programmes, both NSS and NCC groups depended mainly on the financial grants provided by the government and, to some extent, by the college.
