PREFACE

The enemy of our environment is within each one of us because we want more and more at theexpense of Nature, and consume more than our share of materials. Ecological security is equally, if not moreimportant than economic security. Economic development should be based on ecological principles ofenvironmental harmony, resource conservation, local self reliance etc. This could pave the way for sustainabledevelopment.

Activities of the Trust centres around environmental security. We have taken up a project on organiccultivation practices for underutilized medicinal, aromatic and dye yielding plants (MADPs) among smalland marginal farmers of Dindigul District with funds provided by the Food and Agriculture Orgnization ofUnited Nations. Another project is about medicinal garments by applying natural dyes to Khadi fabric. Some Research and Development work is going on for development pigments extracted from Natural dyesfor water colours. Presently such pigments in the market have lead as one of the ingredients. Children whoare in the habit of licking the material ingest some poison. Our pigments once developed will have somemedicinal value and no poison.

Yet another programme is on Waste Management technologies – recycling waste water for vegetablecultivation, production of bio gas from human wastes etc. We are also doing project ensuring distribution ofdrinking water in villages with minimum waste and construction of toilets in all houses.

We have initiated a Self Renewal Process of Gandhigram Trust (SREPGT) for revitalization ofGandhian ideology for the present situation and started a Directorate of Human Resources Development forimproving the performance of our workers.

Siddha and Ayurveda unit of Khadi Trust got Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) Certificate fromthe State Government.

In the next few pages we are giving a brief account of the activities of various units of Gandhigram. We take this opportunity to thank all the well wishers of Gandhigram, individual donors, governmentdepartments, like minded organizations and funding agencies for their constant support.

We assure you of our dedication to serve the rural community by improving the quality of life for thevillage people.

The inner working of the human machine is wonderful. The human body is the universe in miniature. Thatwhich cannot be found in the body is not to be found in the universe. Hence the philosopher’s formula, thatthe universe within reflects the universe without. It follows therefore that if our knowledge of our own bodycould be perfect we would know the universe. But even the very best of doctors and hakims and vaidshave not been able to acquire it. It will be presumptuous for a layman to aspire to it. No one has yetdiscovered an instrument which can give us any information about the human mind. Scientists have givenattractive descriptions of the activities going on within and without the body, but no one can say what setsthe wheel going. Who can explain the why and wherefore of death or foretell its time? In short, after infinitereading and writing, after infinite experience, man has come to know how little he knows.
