A Road to Health in HaitiOn April 2, 2010, at the end of his first day inHaiti, Summit Medical Group Chief Medical Offi-cer Robert W. Brenner, MD, MMM, sent a textmessage to his wife:

“Today was indescribable. They had no water fordays. We delivered a baby onto cardboard. Thepeople are starving, infected, and sick, yet happy. It's utter chaos. It was an unfathomable day.”

Between April 2 and 11, 2010, Dr. Brenner madehis first trip to Haiti with the Church Outreach toYouth (COTY) Project, a nonprofit organizationbased in North Adams, Massachusetts. COTY runsthe Haiti Plunge, which is focused on building aroad and clinic for the people living in the im-poverished Caberet region of Haiti. Together withhis son Danny and Danny’s friend JeremyAdelsheimer, Dr. Brenner traveled to a 9-village co-operative in a remote mountain area approxi-mately 60 miles northwest of Port-Au-Prince. Thetrip was a medical mission to aid victims of thedevastating earthquake on January 12, 2010.

Fellow physcians and staff of Summit MedicalGroup raised 30K+ for the relief efforts followingthe earthquake. Summit Medical Group and Wal-greens pharmacy donated medical supplies for Dr.Brenner's trip.

One year later, Dr. Brenner is taking a lead rolewith the COTY project to build a clinic/hospital tobe named Fanmi La Sante Galgal, or FamilyHealth Clinic at Galgal, Haiti. The facilitywill serve as many as 40,000 people who now haveno health care. There is severely limited access tohealth care in the area, including virtually noacute care, prenatal care, or preventive care. Thenearest hospital is so far away that many die enroute.
