Dear ESCA Members, Supporters and Friends, During 2011 we have once again reached the goals we always set for ourselves, namely to maintain a high level of support services in English for cancer patients and their loved ones in the Léman area and to focus on activities that raise cancer awareness in the community as a whole. This is due to the dedication of our hardworking volunteers and to the great generosity of those who support our work. Our 52 trained volunteers enable us to carry out our purpose of support: the 31 specially trained peer supporters do so directly from an emotional and practical standpoint and the others indirectly through all the tasks necessary to run our association. A total of 7334 hours were volunteered over the course of 2011, which is 10% higher than in 2010 and on average almost 40% of that time was devoted directly to client support! At the same time, as you will see from the pages that follow, a large portion of our volunteers’ time is devoted to activities in the region that raise cancer awareness. We would like to express special thanks to all those who have helped us along the way, notably Cargill and the Oak Foundation, for their very generous donations in 2011, as well as Webster University for the continued and regular use of their classrooms and campus for meetings and events. We also wish to thank the YWCA for the monthly use of their facilities for our Wednesday Information and Discussion Evenings and Procter & Gamble for printing our posters and flyers. We are also very grateful to all individuals who have made donations, big or small, and to those who have organized fundraisers or run marathons to raise funds for ESCA. Last but certainly not least, a huge thank-you to the companies and individuals who participated in our now famous annual PADDLEforCANCER Dragonboat Festival, which is a continued success and whose proceeds will be also be instrumental in enabling us to continue to offer our services. In closing, we would like to extend particular thanks to Kate Marx for her unwavering support as our Vice-President Volunteers for the past two years, as she is stepping down today. Happy reading and take care until next year! Catherine Blanc, President Annual Report 2011 Annual General Meeting Tuesday, 27 March 2012

VOLUNTEERS In 2011 Kate Marx continued to coordinate the expanding ESCA volunteer pool. Among our 52 volunteers, 31 acted as peer supporters for ESCA clients while others supported specific events such as:

The Cancer Awareness Trail, which took place in May in and around Webster University;

The Paddle for Cancer annual regatta, which was held on the first Sunday in September with great cheer despite poor weather conditions;

The Expat Expo, which was held in Palexpo in October; and

A Classical Music Concert in June at the Lutheran Church in Geneva’s Old Town given by the Trio Severini and the well-known Geneva cellist, Daniel Grosgurin. CDs of the concert were produced and sent to ESCA supporters at Christmas time.

In addition to this, two ESCA volunteers who are also cancer survivors, raised funds for the organization by running in the Geneva marathon in May and walking in the Escalade in November. Collaboration with French-speaking cancer organizations in Geneva and Lausanne were reinforced, especially during Cancer Awareness Month in October. ESCA volunteers were represented (among many others) at:

the Pink Tram event in place du Molard;

a one day cancer conference at HUG; an evening seminar at the Clinique des Grangettes; and

the Dépistage du Cancer du Sein stand at Balexert. In addition to supervisory meetings every six weeks provided by the Counselling team, volunteers also benefitted from a self-care workshop in January; a "Life Art Workshop" (based on the methods of Anna Halprin's Tamalpa Institute in the USA) in April; a "Conscious Communication" course (based on Marshall Rosenberg's Nonviolent Communicaton methods) in May; as well as a bereavement and first aid course. Informal coffee mornings continue to be held on the 2nd Friday every month in the Drop-in Centre at ESCA for volunteers to share experiences and ideas. As a thank you to volunteers for their ongoing commitment, two outings were offered during the course of 2011:

25 volunteers went for a sundowner cruise on the "Neptune" in September; and

40 tickets were donated by the European Broadcasting Corporation and TSR for volunteers to attend a Magic Circus Show.

Funds for these outings were sourced through proceeds from Karin De Lamarter's Gym classes and Kate Marx's English language conversation classes. Kate Mark, VP Volunteers

SUPPORT ESCA Peer Support and Counselling During 2011, Raynelle Arcaini joined Thea Marais and Bianca King on the counselling team. In addition to their primary function of supporting ESCA clients, the team were also involved in training and supporting ESCA volunteers and peer supporters. A total of 122 hours were spent counselling 33 clients, their relatives or caregivers as well as counselling the bereaved. Three volunteer training programmes were run in 2011 during which an additional 21 new volunteers (6 of whom are professionals) were trained. These training sessions are essential because the nature of the ex-pat population in Geneva results in a high turnover of volunteers as many return to their home countries every year. During 2011, 6 peer supporters were trained. In addition to six-weekly support and supervisory meetings all of our peer supporters were offered four days of advanced training, thanks to Cargill funding. This has improved their skills and level of competence and allowed them to be able to offer a more advanced level of peer support to the ESCA clients. During the year 33 clients were offered on-going practical or emotional support by the team of 31 volunteer peer supporters. Thanks to a donation from Cargill, two of the counsellors offered a series of therapeutic groups, one for breast cancer clients, the other for anyone in treatment for any type of cancer. These groups offer those in similar situations a space to feel supported and more in control of their situation. Informal support to clients, through Bosom Pals coffee mornings continues with great success. Once a month women who have had breast cancer meet and share mutual experiences in a casual setting. The counselling team is now functioning as a cohesive unit and, as each counsellor has specific skills and expertise, together they are able to offer a total package of support to both ESCA clients and the peer support team. This allows ESCA to offer a full range of support to the English Speaking community in Geneva and the neighbouring areas. Raynelle Arcaini, VP Support, Thea Marais, Psychologist and Bianca King, Volunteer Training

The Drop-in Centre

During 2011, 21 visitors were welcomed to the Drop-in Centre by one of the 29 dedicated volunteers who work there on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Drop-in Centre offers clients a selection of library books, ESCA relaxation CDs, information brochures, or simply a confidential chat with one of the volunteers about their experiences or concerns.

The Drop-in Centre, coordinated by Dorothy Gajsler, is located in the ESCA offices at the Ecumenical Centre in Geneva. These offices, which were recently refurbished by volunteers, also accommodate monthly coffee mornings for Bosom Pals, pre and post volunteer orientation interviews, peer support and volunteer meetings, committee meetings, French and computer lessons for volunteers and more recently, cancer awareness bracelet-making and a monthly volunteer coffee. The office is also used for preparing ESCA events such as Dragonboat, our annual spring event and the ESCA concert. Dorothy Gajsler, Drop-In Coordinator

The ESCA Library The ESCA library continues in its effort to support volunteers, staff and clients by offering access to appropriate background documentation in English to complement information received from cancer professionals. We also include books that enable volunteers to learn more about the problems clients are going through and how to assist them. Library material is available to clients to understand their illness, how to cope and how others have coped before them. Books on a healthy lifestyle are there for all of us. We try to update the collection regularly in all areas of ESCA’s work including healthy nutrition, complementary therapies, life experiences, guidance for carers and families, grieving and bereavement, etc. and are always happy to receive new recommendations for purchase from volunteers and clients. There are over 400 books in the collection of which some 30 new titles were added in 2011. However this year we are starting to “weed” the collection to remove out of date items and to make room for the up-to-date books. Newly acquired titles are listed in the ESCA newsletter and a complete printed list of books is kept up to date on the shelf. Book reviews by interested ESCA members are included regularly in the newsletter and these, together with relevant articles from the press are also collected and are kept in a folder near the books on the shelf. The books are there to be used so please make the most of them! Dorothy Gajsler and the volunteers who are available during the Drop-in-Centre opening hours help with library duties and Beryl Allardyce continues to work with me on cataloguing and preparing the new books. Irene Bertrand, Librarian

Wednesday Information & Discussion Evenings Sandy Cunningham and Annabel Pulcrano were responsible for organising the first Wednesday evening get-togethers, when a speaker was invited to present their topic to ESCA members & visitors. Our topics in 2011 included:

January: Claire Cuneen – Qigong Therapy

February: The Réseau team – Carnet de Bord Hans Wilsdorf

March: Eileen Wiley – Art Therapy

April: Patrice McKinney & Prof Rizzoli from the IOF – Osteoporosis Following a Cancer Diagnosis

May: Stavros Therianos of Diagnoplex – Screening for Colon Cancer

June: Eric Williams – Achilles International

July: Bianca King – Walking Meditation Outdoors

September: Discussion group – What Is Hard About Having Cancer and What Is Not

October: Dr. Diane Herbert – Oestrogen-Blocking Hormone Therapy Following Breast Cancer

November: Patricia Genoud Feldman – Insight Meditation

December: Dennis Terao – Humanitarian work for the Helping Hands Org. This was combined with a Christmas social evening.

These presentations are always followed by healthy refreshments, prepared by Una Murphy and Jackie Hillman. The evenings are attended by between 9 to 20 people. The idea is to present a topic that could be interesting to cancer sufferers, in an informal setting and where questions can be asked. It is also an opportunity for people to get together and meet new ESCA members and friends. Any suggestions or request for specific topics are always welcome and we will do our best to find an appropriate speaker. Annabel Pulcrano, Co-Coordinator Wednesday Information and Discussion Evenings

Exercise Classes Busting Out This has been the third year that ESCA has provided the busting out gym class for women who have had breast cancer and ten women are actively participating in the weekly class given at Webster University on Thursday mornings from 9.30 to 10.30, at a cost CHF 100 for 15 sessions, with the proceeds going to ESCA. This year we prepared a cheerleading dance (pom poms and all!) to perform at the Dragon Boat Festival in September and were rewarded with a very enthusiastic public, clapping and cheering us on to Shakira’s “Hips Don’t Lie” music. Part of the group also participated in the ESCAlade Walk in December and we all finished the 8km march from Veyrier to Parc des Bastions in Geneva in about I hr 20 minutes! In October the Réseau Cancer du Sein organized a Medical Conference and the Geneva Physical Therapy Association was asked to do a presentation on treatments for breast cancer patients. They asked me to speak of my experience with the gym class and all the advantages of doing specific exercises in a group, psychologically very motivating but also excellent to prevent osteoporosis, joint problems, fatigue, depression and so on. Now several Physical Therapists, some coming from Neuchâtel would like to start classes to encourage women to stay fit and healthy. Fit and Fun Exercise Class On Monday evenings ten women come to the exercise class at the International School Nations Campus for a one hour workout. The group is mixed, consisting of clients, one caregiver and volunteers, some having also had cancer. The cost is also CHF 100 for 15 sessions and the proceeds go to ESCA. We do cardio warm-up, stretching, strengthening exercises for abdominals and hips, breathing and relaxation. I enjoy giving both classes very much and it is wonderful to see the individual progress and motivation in everybody ! Thanks go to Webster University and the International School for letting us use their gyms free of charge ! Karin De Lamarter, RPT

Bosom Pals Many of ESCA’s Bosom Pals are active all year round as Peer Supporters but in 2011, as in years past, we were involved in a variety of other activities. Once again we had our terrific team of participants —the Breast Strokers — for the Dragon Boat race on September 4th and had a great time! Our camaraderie was artfully expressed as we performed a special pom-pom dance ably choreographed by Annemiek van den Bosch and led by Karin Delamarter that all will remember (especially us)!

On September 17/18th several ESCA members took part in the extraordinary feat of climbing the 4'165m Breithorn in Zermatt, the “Cordée de la Solidarité”. The event was organised by the Zonta club of Morges, with the aim of showing solidarity amongst breast cancer sufferers. They were led by a Zermatt guide, to overcome fear, high altitude, and quite unfavourable conditions! On this occasion 100 women who had suffered from Breast Cancer walked together in a symbolic gesture to help

each other on the challenge that both this walk and breast cancer present. During October a number of members represented ESCA at various events both in Geneva and Lausanne for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We did the Escalade walk again in December as a group, which was great fun, and then all joined for coffee afterwards. In November there was the now traditional Look Good Feel Better session that is always very popular. As well as these events there is the regular drop-in coffee on the last Friday of every month, which is run by VP Support Raynelle Arcaini and is a big success. It varies in numbers but is well supported and allows the group to discuss treatments, etc. with others in the group who have finished or are at different stages. Of course, we still have our Thursday morning Busting Out gym session that is in the very capable hands of Karin De Lamarter. Sonia Gunton, Bosom Pals Co-Coordinator

COMMUNICATION Publicity The publicity team has worked very hard on several fronts and one of the results is the brochure printed in February of last year. It is extremely useful in our outreach efforts and all the events that we attend throughout the year where we have a stand. The other result after a lengthy survey conducted by Patsy Morgenstern is our new logo that sits at the top of the first page of this report. For many years now we have been very fortunate to have the support of Lynn Hegi, who is a graphic artist and a teacher. More recently, we were also very lucky to benefit from the precious advice of Victoria Dix and Bob Heron of Young & Rubicam. Websites The ESCA (www.cancersupport.ch) and the PADDLEforCANCER (www.paddleforcancer.ch) websites were designed and are maintained by Tina Debos of Indesigns.ch. Updating of the websites continues to be done by ESCA volunteers. We make a conscious effort to keep our sites as up-to-date as possible. EVENTS Cancer Awareness Trail ESCA welcomed all to celebrate spring on Sunday, May 1st, 2011 with an adventure for the family in and around Webster University in Bellevue, featuring guided environmental walks, exercise classes and complementary therapies. ESCA information stands and a used book table were open throughout the day. During lunch, picnics, including vegetarian meals, were available and throughout the day tea, coffee, juices, wine and beer along with homemade cakes, all for a nominal fee. An Afternoon of Chamber Music ESCA organized a lovely classical summer concert in the Lutheran church in the Old Town of Geneva on the afternoon of June 11th , 2011. The Severini String Trio and cellist Daniel Grosgurin, performed pieces by J.Haydn, Telemann, J.S. Bach, L. Cherubini, Juan C. Arriaga, Franz Schubert, Alexander Borodin and the European premiere by Larry Allan Smith of “Songs Without Words” for cello. Although the purpose of the concert was to thank our supporters, in the end donations nearly covered our costs!

Expat-Expo Once again ESCA had a stand at the yearly Expat-Expo at Palexpo on October 2nd and this proved very useful in making the public aware of our presence and the services that we offer in the Léman area. The Breast Cancer Network ESCA continues to be a member of the Breast Cancer Network (Réseau cancer du sein), which unites medical professionals, patient associations and breast cancer survivors to find ways to improve the diagnosis, treatment and care of breast cancer patients. As such, ESCA has participated in many of the events organized by the Network, particularly during the month of October, which is Breast Cancer Month. Just prior to Breast Cancer Month, the Network started the celebrations of its 10th anniversary by launching the spectacular Pink Tram that bore the logos of all the members of this network – including ESCA’s – and circulated throughout Geneva until mid-November. Needless to say, we were present for this event! On October 1st ESCA volunteers helped (wo)man the Pink Tent at the Place de la Fusterie in Geneva. There was an information stand, a sale of Pink Night T-shirts and a distribution of pink ribbons and tickets for the Pink Night ice hockey match in the evening. At the end of the day, several members attended the Pink Night ice hockey match at the Vernets Arena. It has become a fun yearly tradition! On October 10th ESCA held a stand at the HUG for a conference entitled “Journée romande des Effets Adverses Cancer du Sein: SURVIVRE ET VIVRE (Breast Cancer: Surviving and Living)” organized by the Breast Cancer Network. This day-long conference was extremely informative with talks from physiotherapists, oncologists, radio-oncologists, psychologists, a plastic surgeon, breast cancer nurses, and a dental hygienist. Peer supporter and ESCA gym class instructor Karin De Lamarter, who is a registered physiotherapist, participated in the presentation made by the physiotherapists. That day the BCN presented their Carnet de Bord Hans-Wilsdorf, a personal and medical diary for women to accompany them on the road to recovery. This diary is available to all women undergoing treatment and, although it is in French, ESCA will make it available to its members because it is such a precious tool. Throughout the day ESCA, along with the other members of the Network, held a stand at the entrance to the conference.

In early November ESCA’s president gave a short presentation about our association — along with other member associations of the Breast Cancer Network — at the yearly breast cancer given at the HUG Maternity Hospital this year. Other October Activities On October 6th a group of ESCA volunteers held an information stand at the Maternity Hospital of the CHUV (Vaud University Hospital) as part of the October breast cancer awareness events. Various health professionals gave presentations on the topic of individualized support to breast cancer patients, conducted within an interdisciplinary team. Our stand in the main hall of the Maternity Hospital welcomed many passers-by & medical staff. On October 18th ESCA held a stand at the HUG (University Hospital of Geneva) during an afternoon and evening conference organized by the Breast Cancer Center’s Prof. Monica Castiglione-Gertsch called “Réadaptation/Réhabilitation après un cancer (Readaptation and Rehabilitation After Cancer).” As in past years, several ESCA volunteers were present at Balexert on October 22nd at a stand organized by the Geneva Breast Cancer Screening Foundation. The Maison de Tara ESCA has been very involved in the establishment of the Maison de Tara, the first Geneva hospice. The official opening in the presence of the local mayor took place in the commune of Chêne-Bougeries on September 15th and the hospice was open to residents in the autumn. Of the 100 or so volunteers who have been trained to work there, about 30 are English speakers and about half of those are ESCA peer supporters, whose special training was funded by a donation from Cargill.

ESCA PADDLEforCANCER Dragonboat Festival 2011

Drips, drizzles and downpours dampened not one spirit at the fifth annual PADDLEforCANCER Dragonboat Festival on September 4th, 2011, on the shores of the Lac de Joux at L’Abbaye. Competitors arrived pumped, with smiles, costumes, and energy enough to light up the sky. PADDLEforCANCER is ESCA’s annual cancer awareness raising and fundraising event that brings together companies, associations, schools and local groups from Geneva, Vaud and neighboring France in a show of support for those who have been touched by cancer. To our amazement and great pleasure, registration was complete within weeks of opening on March 1st! We had the absolute maximum number of teams: 52 in total, of which 25 were Corporate, 15 were Open and 12 were All Female. The non-stop rain of the day did nothing to dampen the spirits. Each team showed up and participated until the end! Unfortunately, for the well-being of all those present, families, children and volunteers included, we made the very difficult decision to shorten the day by cancelling the 3rd round of races. Many thanks to all for their understanding! Corporate teams and sponsors We are very grateful to our loyal corporate teams who sign up year after year! These return paddlers include teams from: Barclays Wealth, Cargill International, KPMG, Eaton, Medtronic, Merck-Serono, Firmenich, Credit Suisse, Village Camps, IMD, Caterpillar, Bunge, Citi Private Bank and Ernst & Young. Participating as well were: EA Sports, Haemonetics, Yahoo!, Intuitive Surgical, Shire, SGS and Bacardi. Newcomers this year included The Clubhouse, who also generously ran the drinks stand, and the Beau Rivage Palace who showed up in lovely white robes and slippers!

Merck-Serono and Schofield & Partners provided support that helped create cancer survivor and caregiver teams. In addition, we had many PromoSponsors who donate in-kind towards the event. These included: P&G, Partytime, LocaClim, y-en-a.com communication.information, The Clubhouse, Daylong Spirig, Webster University and Lutry Viticulture.

Without the generous support of the corporate teams and sponsors, their enthusiasm and great sportsmanship, this event would not have been the success it was. The Village Camps Vikings continued to defend their title and walked away with first place in the 8-boat corporate final for the fourth year in a row with Cargills’s Play to win coming in a close second followed by EA Sports in third place.

Open teams Open Teams included those from the international schools of La Châtaigneraie and La Côte, the

Divas and Dons, the Dragon Slayers, Paddy’s Pride, Les Archidragons, Candu Boatmen, KCBN2, GAOS Gondoliers, WTO WePad, Hop Hop Hope L’enfance et cancer, Geneva HHH, Le Syndic de l’Abbaye and, of course, ESCA's own team, the ESCA Paddlers. First place this year was awarded to the Dragon Slayers with second going to Candu Boatmen and third place this year to the Syndic de L’Abbaye.

All female teams We were very excited to have twelve All Female Teams this year! The Breast Strokers (ESCA’s team of breast cancer survivors), Dragon Divas, Dragon Slayerettes, Vaud Vixens, ISL Sirens, ViQueens, Di-Vine Paddlers, Birds of Paradise, She-Wolves, Radio Frontier, KCBN1 and CATSEYES battled it out with several races having very close times, even photo finishes! In the end, though, it was the Dragon Slayerettes who came in first place, followed by the ISL Sirens in second and Radio Frontier in third. During the pause in the afternoon, we were entertained with a lively pom pom dance performed by the Busting Out Gym Class. This group of breast cancer survivors meets and works out once a week, led by physiotherapist and ESCA volunteer, Karin De Lamarter. Many of those dancing were also paddling for the Breaststrokers, ESCA’s breast cancer survivor Dragonboat team! Mini Regatta

Another bright spot in our otherwise damp and grey day was the success of the Mini Regatta. This free event for children ages 6-15 involved races in 6-person mini dragonboats (dinghies) and 2-person junior canoes. Over 100 children participated with prizes given to the top three winners in the two categories.

The proceeds Proceeds from registration fees and general donations were directed towards ESCA in order to build upon its excellent services to cancer patients and their loved ones living in the Geneva, Vaud and French border areas, such as support services, the Drop-in Centre, the Information Library, the annual awareness raising day and the training and continuing education of our dedicated peer supporters and volunteers. These funds also go towards administrative costs

Page 14: Annual Report 2011 Annual General Meeting Tuesday, 27 March … · 2012. 5. 3. · Tuesday, 27 March 2012 . 2 VOLUNTEERS In 2011 Kate Marx continued to coordinate the expanding ESCA

14

and the printing and development of cancer information. The amount generated for 2011 came to approximately CHF 83’000! Our new fundraising initiative, The Fundraisers’ Challenge, which was introduced in 2010, continued to grow in success. Penny Ross coordinated this initiative along with the coordination of the teams. More and more teams showed enthusiasm and entered their teams in this competition. Corporate and open teams were encouraged to fund raise above and beyond the registration fee. In 2011, over CHF 25’627 was raised! The winner of the corporate category was Eaton and from the open category, it was the Birds of Paradise. These two teams alone raised almost CHF 10’000! These additional, targeted funds were used as follows:

The ESCA Counselling Fund, which helps cancer patients and family members receive important professional counselling that may not be covered by their insurance.

La Maison de Tara, Geneva’s first hospice. The funds went to create a beautiful, peaceful garden for patients, loved ones and volunteers to enjoy.

Balloon race This year saw the festival’s first Balloon Race, organised by Karen Jones, who also organised and ran the famous used-book stall. At the end of the day 162 helium-filled balloons in a rainbow of colors representing different cancers were released, each one belonging to a ticket holder who had paid 5CHF to enter the contest. The winners were the “holders” of the balloons that travelled furthest from the Lac de Joux and the persons who found them. The winning ticket came all the way from Uttigen in German-speaking Switzerland. The armada An armada of 150 volunteers gave nearly 3,000 hours of work during the weekend to keep all the activities of the day running smoothly. They included 27 willing and energetic students from Webster University, Rob Ireland’s international group of boat handlers and race managers, and ESCA volunteers, many with their children and spouses pressed into service. As in previous years, Felix Meier with his professional team from dragonboatevents.ch GmbH gave far more than the technical support essential to the races. We look forward to PADDLEforCANCER 2012 that is scheduled for Sunday, 2nd September 2012, at L’Abbaye.
