Dear Friends:

The pace of change and growth at Operation Homefront continues to accelerate, reflecting the changes faced by military families every day. Our 2013 Annual Report reflects a year of accomplishment in the face of a transformation among the population of service members and wounded warriors we serve. That accomplishment was possible only because of the support of thousands of volunteers, donors, and other supporters.

As 2013 drew to a close, there were still 38,000 Americans stationed in Afghanistan. That number will continue to fall this year, but the Pentagon expects to keep just

under 10,000 service members in that country for the foreseeable future, to say nothing of those stationed at other overseas posts around the world.

As more Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines come home, we have adapted our programs to meet their evolving needs. We have learned that America’s commitment to its military families is unflagging. In 2013, Operation Homefront received a record $73 million in cash and in-kind contributions.

Working with our partners, we expanded our core program – emergency financial assistance – to the families of all post-9/11 wounded, ill, and injured. The need for assistance for these families was great, and we assisted nearly four times the number of families with emergency assistance – doubling the dollar amount given in 2012. In fact, we found that there were not enough hours in the workday to meet this demand. So to make sure that our military families received assistance as quickly as possible, we added an entirely new night shift of caseworkers over the course of several months.

With so many service members coming home, we were able to give the American Dream of home ownership to a new generation of veterans. Our Homes on the Homefront program grew dramatically in 2013, putting hundreds of military families in mortgage-free homes, equating to $41M in avoided mortgage and finance costs.

To meet this need, we doubled our team of housing caseworkers. Not only do these caring social workers place families in homes, they provide the supportive services to ensure the successful transition of the entire family.

Managing this growth has been a challenge, and we have met the challenge. While expanding and creating new programs to meet critical needs, we continued to focus on stewarding donations wisely, with 93% of our budget going directly to Programs.

What we learned from 2013 was that we must do more than just assist military families in crisis. We can help families transform their lives and hopefully avert future crises with tailored financial education. This forward-looking approach to our work supports the highest-priority goal in our strategic plan: stable and secure military families.

Operation Homefront’s exceptional team of staff and volunteers helped thousands of deserving military families in 2013. Their ability to serve those who have sacrificed so much for our country is due to your generous support and love for those in uniform and our veterans. On their behalf, thank you.

Sincerely,

Jim Knotts President & CEO Operation Homefront

▐ Operation Homefront met more needs for emergency financial assistance than ever before. Financial assistance grants rose from 1,276 in 2012 to 4,631 in 2013 – an increase of 263 percent.

▐ Food, utilities, and rent and mortgage assistance remain the most commonly-requested forms of emergency assistance. Operation Homefront met 2,968 needs for emergency food assistance in 2013; these needs remain elevated at nearly triple the pre-recession levels of 2008. Utility assistance tripled to 1,668 needs met, and rent and mortgage assistance increased 287 percent to 1,273 needs met.

▐ Through partnerships with major banks, the Homes on the Homefront program moved 188 military families into permanent, mortgage-free homes in 2013. Since the program was launched in early 2012, over 250 families have moved into mortgage-free homes. For the first time in 2013, 23 Homes on the Homefront recipients successfully completed their required transition plans in the program and received the deeds to their homes.

▐ Maintained an efficiency rating of 93 percent, which means 93 percent went directly to programs supporting our military families. In 2013, Operation Homefront spent over $46.6 million on programs and just $3.5 million on administration and fundraising.

Highlights of 2013▐ The three Operation Homefront Villages, each located

near a major military medical facility, provided housing and assistance to 79 wounded warriors and their families, helping them reconnect and re-adjust to civilian life during rehabilitation.

▐ In partnership with supporters, held ten Homefront Celebrations, providing inspirational morale building and peer-to-peer support.

▐ Responding to the evolving needs of our military families, Operation Homefront broadened its eligibility criteria for emergency financial assistance. Aid that had previously been available to the families of deployed or recently discharged service members is now made available for all families of post-9/11 wounded, ill, or injured service members and veterans.

▐ Received high ratings or accreditations from nationally recognized charity evaluation organizations.

▐ Operation Homefront’s Holiday Meals for Military, Thanksgiving Food Baskets, and Easter Baskets programs combined to provide more than 11,000 meals for military families.

▐ Opening its doors for the first time to male caregivers of wounded warriors, the Hearts of Valor™ program welcomed 821 new members, for a total membership of 1,590. The program includes 36 community-based support groups.

▐ Added to the Board of Directors Michael Carnuccio of The Liberty Foundation of America, Marty Hauser of United Technologies, Kendall McCarthy, and Laurie Gallo of Booz Allen Hamilton.

Murphy-Goode ► Murphy-Goode, an award winning, family-owned winery in Sonoma County, California, has been a winery partner with Operation Homefront since 2011. They’ve created a special red wine called Homefront Red and donate fifty cents to Operation Homefront for every bottle sold, raising more than $300,000 in 2013. Murphy-Goode’s contributions are helping to provide emergency financial assistance to the families of our service members and wounded warriors.

For the past two years, Murphy-Goode has also been a sponsor for the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl and a presenting sponsor of the bowl’s ESPN VIP Party. In 2013, Murphy-Goode hosted 100 military service members as guests to the game. Murphy-Goode’s toast to the troops not only boosted morale, but also honored the selfless sacrifice of those who serve and those who support them at home.

As yet another way to say thank you and honor individuals who are making a difference in their community, Murphy-Goode launched “A Few Goode Heroes" social media contest in 2013. In this year’s contest, five finalists were selected from hundreds of fan submissions. Fans voted to select the grand prize winner who received a $1,000 donation to their favorite non-profit and a matching gift to Operation Homefront.

Walmart ► Walmart, in their commitment to support our military, donated $1.5 million to Operation Homefront in 2013 for the Joy of Giving holiday program. Like many Americans, our military families are dealing with difficult economic times which can be even more pronounced during the holidays.

Walmart’s generous donation helped provide 25,000 toys and more than 17,000 meals to military families nationwide. These holiday gifts were distributed to our most junior service members to show our nation’s appreciation and supplement the family holiday.

Operation Homefront was also able to bring 500 active duty military home to spend holidays with their families thanks to Walmart’s donation. Our service members are stationed all over the world and often go several years without being able to visit family. The holidays can be challenging for people, especially for those who are away from family like so many of our active duty military. By covering the airfare for service members to go home, we not only show gratitude, but help to maintain morale and resiliency in these military families. Walmart also supports veterans through its Welcome Home Commitment, which guarantees a job offer to any honorably discharged veteran within 12 months of service.

Wells Fargo ► Wells Fargo, a nationwide, community-based financial services company, has worked with Operation Homefront in support of our Homes on the Homefront program since 2012. They donated 57 bank-owned homes to Operation Homefront in 2013, which will save military families more than $6 million in mortgage payments.

Over the course of our relationship, Wells Fargo has played an integral part in putting 74 military families into mortgage-free homes. Their ongoing commitment to supporting military services has helped these service members, who have sacrificed in order to secure our freedoms, realize an essential part of the American Dream.

When veterans move into the homes, they are also provided with transitional services which include family financial planning bringing resources to help them grow and move forward following their transition from the military. Donated homes not only help military families to avoid financial crisis now, but can also have a transformative generational impact for decades to come.
