As President of St Margaret’s and Berwick Grammar School Council, I am pleased to present to you the 2013 Annual Report. Over the last 12 months at St Margaret’s and Berwick Grammar there have been many improvements and achievements across the three campuses. The School Council would like to acknowledge the Senior Management team, lead by Principal Mr Doug Bailey, for their hard work and dedication. Business Manager, Mr Trevor Irwin has been a welcome addition to the school.

Educational outcomes are profoundly shaped by the relationships between teachers and students. At our school we have wonderful, talented and caring teachers. These teachers nurture the students, so they feel secure and confident enough to happily strive for academic success.

We are a school that takes pride in the quality of the young people who leave the school and embark on the next phase of their life. A learning environment that values the world as the broadest context for learning is an excellent one. We do this so well at St Margaret’s and Berwick Grammar School. In this environment, all parents and students seek the best possible outcome at the end of Year 12.

In our School community there are wonderful people who have given extraordinary service to the school. At the Senior School Speech Night we acknowledged Mrs Kirsty Mitchell and Mrs Joan Phillips. These two women have been involved with the school as either parents, members of the Parents’ and Friends’ Association or board members, for a total of 63 years, between them. Mrs Joan Phillips is a Life Governor of the school and Mrs Kirsty Mitchell was appointed a Life Governor at the end of 2013. It is people like this that make our school community what it is today.

Our school is an educational leader in the area. We have parents enrolling their children because they want what we have to offer. We should be proud of our standing in the educational market, a very competitive one. Our student numbers are increasing every year. We have some year levels that are full, with students awaiting a place. This is recognition of all the work we have undertaken in the last few years to improve and develop further our educational program.

I am retiring at the next Annual General Meeting in May 2014 and it has been a privilege to have been of service to such a remarkable school. Under the leadership of Mr Doug Bailey the school will flourish and continue it’s journey, offering a world class education to it’s students. 2014 is another exciting year and our first Year 12 cohort at BGS will graduate. It is a time to sit back and reflect on how far we have come and how much further we can go, all for the benefit of our girls and boys.

Welcome to the St Margaret’s and Berwick Grammar School 2013 Annual Report. My second Annual Report as Principal and the 87th Annual Report in the distinguished history of our school.

2013 was a huge year of growth and development across all schools, with the exciting delivery of new facilities on each campus. The Early Learning Centre (ELC) welcomed the arrival of a new classroom to house an additional group of new students, the Wallabies, and the ELC playground (661m2) was extensively refurbished and now includes an environmental vegetable garden, soft fall surfacing, climbing fort and natural play-scape.

The Junior School celebrated a building extension, with the addition of two state of the art classrooms, complete with decking, air conditioning, bag storage, toilet amenities and interactive whiteboards. The Year 3 students were quick to occupy the new site and stamp their ownership on the new dwelling. After a few days of rigorous testing they collectively gave it their tick of approval.

In her official opening address Mrs Williams, Head of Senior School at St Margaret’s was quoted as saying ‘It has taken three principals and ten years to finally deliver the Senior School a VCE Centre’. This headline ran through all the local media outlets.

The St Margaret’s Senior School VCE Centre, sitting proudly on the hill, consists of four classrooms, a Year 12 common room, Year 10 to12 Coordinators offices, Careers office and Science staffroom. More than just classrooms, extensive decking connects the VCE Centre to the library Foyer and is also utilised by the girls, for quiet study, reflection, dining and relaxing (during breaks) with friends.

The excitement at Berwick Grammar School centred around the opening of an additional four classrooms as part of the Art and Design Technology Centre duplication. Included in these rooms are a Macintosh Laboratory, Year Level Coordinator office and staffroom, and three multipurpose classrooms. A breakout area houses the lockers for the entire Year 9 population, who are proud to call this new building their home. To the side of the oval, a three pitch cricket training net facility has been completed, and thanks to the BGS Foundation, the boys of BGS can continue to develop and refine their cricket skills.

The 2012 -2016 St Margaret’s and Berwick Grammar School Strategic Plan, developed in conjunction with School Council, continues to drive our growth and improvement. The Strategic Plan reflects our ongoing commitment to ensure that the focus areas and strategies of the school are aligned with our values, mission and strategic intent.

The priority is to ensure St Margaret’s School and Berwick Grammar School are well positioned to:• accurately reflect the values and aspirations of our

community as a school of first choice • ensure continuous development and a prosperous future

for our school through a high level of informed and ethical governance

• foster positive, supportive relations, respect and mutual understanding with all members of our school community

• provide multiple opportunities for enhanced engagement in school activities for our families and community.

At St Margaret’s School and Berwick Grammar School we seek to be a school of first choice underpinned by:• a strong moral purpose and values with an emphasis on

The academic staff of St Margaret’s and Berwick Grammar School are passionate, dedicated; talented and determined to bring out the best in every child. Outstanding results both quantitative and qualitative were achieved across the school from Joeys (3 year olds) to Year 12.

I would like to congratulate the graduating Class of 2013 for their outstanding results which included:• 15% of our students achieved an ATAR over 95, placing

them in the top 5% of the nation• 29% attained an ATAR over 90, placing them in the top 10%• 42% of the year level attained scores over 85• 19% of our study scores were over 40 • 100% of students received a further study offer.

Caitlin Murphy was our School Dux receiving an ATAR of 98.85. Caitlin was thrilled with her results and we are very proud of her and all our Year 12 graduates. Upon receiving her results and being informed of her dux status Caitlin was quoted as saying, ‘I could not be happier with my VCE results. It is so rewarding to see that hard work pays off and I am extremely excited about the opportunities now open to me.’

Caitlin has already returned to St Margaret’s, now as an Alumnae, and delivered an inspiring address to the senior school, along with a few study tips on achieving personal best. The following students, along with achieving outstanding results, have won prestigious scholarships to support them in their field of study. • Pietra Dekker, Medicine and Surgery (Monash Scholarship

for Excellence and Equity and the Vice Chancellor’s Access Monash Scholarship)

• Jenny Lin, Arts (Global) and Commerce (Monash Scholarship for Excellence and Equity and the Vice Chancellor’s Access Monash Scholarship)

• Manisha Siriwardene, Biomedical Science (Monash Scholarship for Excellence and Equity and the Vice Chancellor’s Access Monash Scholarship)

• Jennifer Dawes, Accounting.(Monash University).

I would like to conclude my Annual Report article with a quote from a graduating Year 12 student collected via our Year 12 satisfaction surveys. ‘I never thought that I would feel like I belonged or mattered in high school. SMS has given me the opportunity to participate in so many activities and to flourish as an individual. I have been able to witness my strengths, weaknesses and areas to improve as a result of the school’s curriculum, co-curricular activities etc. I feel forever grateful that I was able to be a part of this school and I will cherish my memories of it forever.’

Class of 2013 Tertiary Destinations All of our 2013 graduates have received first round offers from universities and colleges based locally, nationally, internationally and/or an offer of full time employment. Some offers included honour degrees and scholar programs. Our students have selected a wide range of further learning opportunities.

Strong growth has been experienced in all school sections, with the greatest growth occurring at Berwick Grammar School who will continue to add year levels to grow through to Year 12 in 2014.

Enrolments 2002 - 2013

NAPLAN dataThe National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual National assessment for all Australian students in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9. All students in these year levels are expected to participate in tests for reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy. The content of each test is informed by the national Statements of Learning for English and Mathematics which underpin state and territory learning frameworks. Questions are multiple-choice or require a short written response. The writing task required students to write a persuasive text.

NAPLAN tests provide a snapshot of students’ literacy and numeracy skills as compared with the state results. As NAPLAN data is based on single assessments, the information provided would only be seen as a simple measure of student progress. More comprehensive assessments are provided by the school throughout the year in senior school and at the end of each semester in junior school.

In the graphs, our school (St Margaret’s and Berwick Grammar) is represented by the red boxes, the state is represented by the beige coloured boxes.

As the graphs demonstrate, students at St Margaret’s School and Berwick Grammar School perform exceptionally well against Victorian schools.

practice in the areas of risk management, compliance with the requirements of the relevant authorities, debtor management and the annual budget review.

The 2013 workforce composition for St Margaret’s School and Berwick Grammar School comprised of 117 academic (full-time equivalent 103.3) and 53 non-teaching staff (full time equivalent 40.6), with zero indigenous staff for this period.

The School prepares its Annual Financial Statements in accordance with Accounting Standards and the Corporations Law, and these are externally audited. Below contains a summary of the school financial performance for 2013.

FINANCE REPORT

Business Manager’s report

Facilities ManagementThe School’s facility development is overseen by the Buildings and Grounds committee. This committee of the School Council is chaired by Mr Mark Grove and is comprised of School Councillors, Mr Chris Kelly and Mrs Mary-Jo Cochrane (President). Membership of the committee is also extended to the School’s Business Manager, Mr Trevor Irwin, Principal, Mr Doug Bailey and the Head of each School sector or their nominee.

Through careful financial management and a healthy fundraising program, a number of building projects were completed in 2013. These included:• refurbishment of the Heriot McManus Music School• refurbishment of the Elisabeth Sewell Gymnasium• completion of Cyberspace learning space at

Berwick Grammar• relocation of Berwick Grammar Gymnasium and

classroom renovations • renovation of Hills junior science lab (SMS Senior School)• continuation of the roll-out of air conditioners• replacement of decking, steps and handrails and

improvements to Hills classrooms pergola, downpipes and handrails.

2014 will see more capital works being undertaken including: At St Margaret’s School:• renovations to Joan Butler Arts Centre • continuation of the roll-out of air conditioners.At Berwick Grammar School:• completion of external concrete paving around the new shed • storage for the Human Powered Vehicles • completion of building eaves at Middle School and

Administration entry • replacement of handrails to Administration entry.

Our team of maintenance and grounds staff continued to meet their own high standards in managing our grounds and buildings in 2013, and the School greatly appreciates their efforts.

Finance and Risk ManagementThe School’s financial direction is overseen by the Finance and Risk Management Committee. This committee of the School Council is chaired by Mr Darren Gosling and is comprised of School Councillors, Mr Mark Grove, Mr Pino Stravalli, Ms Melissa Gittus and Mrs Mary-Jo Cochrane (President). Membership to the committee is also extended to the school’s Business Manager, Mr Trevor Irwin and Principal, Mr Doug Bailey.

Systems and procedures being developed by the School, in conjunction with the Finance and Risk Management Committee, have ensured the School continues to comply with all its legal and regulatory requirements while striving for best

ST MARGARET’S EARLY LEARNING CENTREDirector’s report

2013 was a year of significant and positive change for the Early Learning Centre. With the development of our brand new classroom, we were able to change our structure and offer two three year old groups (Joeys 2 and Joeys 3) and two four year old groups (Kangaroos and Wallabies). This development enabled more consistent teaching staff for the children, ensuring security and a greater sense of wellbeing for the children we work with. Our Early Learning Centre teaching team was enriched by the addition of four new staff, who supported the existing teachers in our ongoing reflections of our teaching practises and Early learning Centre organisation.

For the children, the greatest excitement was the establishment of the new playground. With the generous donation from the Parents’ and Friends’ Association, our playground was completely remodelled, providing the children with a safer, more natural and exciting outdoor space. The four year old groups learned more about sustainability as they planted vegetables in the garden patch, whilst the three year old groups developed their creativity and co-operation as they designed a scarecrow to keep away the birds from the precious vegetables. Many healthy sticks of celery were enjoyed by the children, fresh from their very own vegetable garden.

The highlight for the children and families every year is the performance of each of the Christmas concerts on stage in the auditorium, and 2013 was no exception. For weeks the children trekked to the auditorium, developing their risk-taking skills and confidence as they worked together to rehearse and remember their parts. With much anticipation their families watched the performances of Ten Little Angels, The Littlest Christmas Tree and Wombat Divine. With very few dry eyes in the house, the parents proudly reflected on how far their children had come in the short time that they had spent in the Early Learning Centre program.

ST MARGARET’SJUNIOR SCHOOLHead of Campus report

Ms Carole ReedHead of St Margaret’s Junior School

In partnership with parents and the community, 2013 proved to be a most satisfying and productive year for all students and staff in the Junior School. Enrolments were steady throughout the year with students shared between 15 classes (Prep to Year 6). The Early Learning Centre (ELC) welcomed an additional four year old group thanks to the refurbishment of a classroom and the young ELC children also enjoyed their bright new playground and caring for their vegetable patch. Eighty four students were enrolled in the ELC during 2013 consisting of two three year old groups (Joeys) and two four year old groups (Kangaroos and Wallabies). In total the year concluded with 358 students enrolled across the Junior School years.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) evaluation was a major highlight of the year. Teachers, parents, members of School Council and students provided valuable input and feedback that resulted in a very positive outcome with clear direction for the future. The Junior School was commended for its strong educational philosophy and stimulating learning environment based on respect and collaboration.

New and exciting initiatives were introduced during 2013 that proved to be very popular and a real boost for learning. The launch of the Academic Extension Program had a positive impact across all year levels. Students of all ages were engaged in a range of challenging and discovery based programs and activities. Some of these included G.A.T.E.WAYS, Tournament of Minds, Awesome Authors Association, Electronics, Robotics, Casey Council competitions/exhibitions, Melbourne Writer’s Festival, student leadership, Maths Challenge and Science Exploration. Higher order thinking and problem solving remained the focus of the Academic Extension Program as the year unfolded.

The Learning Support Program also continued to flourish with the learning support teacher and aides providing additional individual and group support to students experiencing difficulty primarily in English and Maths. Staff training and implementation of the Bridges Literacy Program enabled a more consistent and comprehensive approach to the teaching and learning of reading in Year 1, 2 and 3.

Teachers continued to set the bar high and work hard with their students and families to take up the challenges and strive for excellence. Once again the Year 3 and 5 NAPLAN results reflected the excellent standard that we have come to expect from our students. Student achievement data was the driving force behind the teaching and learning with all results recorded online to ensure accurate long term tracking of individual achievement and progress. There will be a shift towards online reporting during 2014.

The Student Representative Council (SRC) was successfully launched consisting of ten students from Year 2 to 6. Thanks to the initiative and compassion of the students, the children’s

ward at Casey Hospital and the Australian Animal Rescue were two charities supported by the students through their fundraising efforts. Community links and service are an important component of each child’s education at St Margaret’s.

The first coffee and chat morning proved to be popular and helpful for parents. Anxiety and Resilience in Children was selected as the focus with local psychologist, Shelley Moore presenting strategies and tips to help our children become more resilient and less anxious. The session also provided a valuable opportunity for parents to ask questions and share stories.

The Junior School is committed to a strong transition program for incoming Prep children, Year 4 boys moving to BGS and the Year 6 girls progression to Senior School. Assemblies, classroom visits, focussed activities, information sessions, meeting teachers, social activities and friendly buddies undoubtedly contributed to a happy and positive transition process. All worked together to successfully develop each student’s connectedness and a sense of belonging in their new environment across the three campuses.

Overall 2013 proved to be a very productive and satisfying year for our Junior School community.

ST MARGARET’SSENIOR SCHOOLHead of Campus report

Mrs Fiona WilliamsHead of St Margaret’s Senior School

The 2013 school year opened with much excitement as the VCE Centre was finally opening. With its new classrooms, staff offices and spacious Year 12 Common Room, this building has not only created a hub for VCE students to work and relax together, but has also eased some of the pressure on spaces elsewhere in the school. The senior students now have an examination centre in a quiet corner of the school and expansive balconies and gardens in which to relax.

The girls also have wonderful teachers, many of whom are currently working on, or have completed, further studies. All teachers at St Margaret’s School undertake regular professional learning which ensures they are, or are moving towards, ‘highly accomplished’ or ‘leading teachers’ in each of the National Teaching Standards. The teaching staff have also taken responsibility for, and are well ahead in, the implementation of the National Curriculum. Our staff are experts in the art of pedagogy. They have a love of learning and a passion for their subject areas which they share with their students every day. This was recognised by the students on World Teacher’s Day when the Student Council organised a special assembly for the teachers. Awards were presented to each teacher and the girls concluded the assembly with a song they had written calledThe Best Staff Ever. It was a joyous celebration where the students showed their appreciation of their teachers.

This year, through school assemblies, the girls have been challenged to think more broadly about a range of issues. Our School Captains, Alice Cochrane and Sophia Mayes, delivered many memorable assemblies where they tackled difficult issues affecting girls and young women. These included teenage body image, cyberbullying and embracing your individuality. Special guests at our assemblies included Connie Johnson from the breast cancer charity Love Your Sister, Julie Hunter from the Australian Women’s Cricket team, Wesa Chau (Class of 1999) Young Victorian of the Year (2010) and International Student advocate, Emma Dearness (nee Schreurs, Class of 2006) who lived in China as part of an overseas service project and, at Speech Night, we welcomed back alumnae Jennifer Byrne who is well known for her journalistic work in print, radio and TV.

Achieving academic excellence and personal best is at the core of a St Margaret’s School education. The Class of 2013 achieved wonderful results with 15% achieving an ATAR of over 95 placing them in the top 5% of the nation and 42% achieving an ATAR of over 85 placing them in the top 15% of the nation. We were again invited to the Premier’s VCE Awards ceremony which recognises the top students in each VCE study.

However a St Margaret’s education is much broader than just achieving a high ATAR. Offering a diverse range of curricular

and co-curricular opportunities is integral to allowing our students find their individual passions. This year has seen great success on the sports field for both individuals and teams. The Senior Cricket team won their competition and we have had students selected to represent both their state and country in athletics, cross-country running, cycling, gymnastics, equestrian and basketball. Our HPV teams continue to dominate all events they enter and our football team has enjoyed great success after moving to top GSV division.

Our performing arts program has swelled this year with the birth of the Victorian School of Performing Arts (VSPA). The VSPA program supplements the wonderful opportunities open to all students in the senior school in the area of performing arts. Again this year, we were blessed with beautiful music created by our students at the Masters Music Recital and the School Concerts. Talented musicians, singers and actors also thrilled audiences in the school production of The Wizard of Oz. A growing number of our students were successful in the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) and Trinity Guildhall Drama examinations – both internationally recognised examinations.

We also had a winner in the History Teachers Association National History Challenge run by the History Teachers Association, a winner in the National Science Quiz, a student shortlisted for the Fresh Words Young Writer’s Competition run by the City of Casey and a winner in the Doveton Library Young Writer’s Competition.

At Speech Night, Jennifer Byrne reminisced about her years at St Margaret’s School. She noted that it was a school which normalised female achievement. St Margaret’s School still normalises female achievement and our girls achieve to the highest possible standard.

My first year as Head of Berwick Grammar School has truly been an incredible journey. I have been delighted to be able to go to school every day and work with such an amazing team of staff, a supportive and engaged parent community and respectful, energetic and eager students.

The education of your boys is a partnership between the family and the School, fostering a strong sense of belonging. John Donne said ‘no man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main’. The remarkable growth and success of Berwick Grammar thus far cannot be attributed to a single person; we are all a part of it. As a united community we continue to believe in; and work together to achieve a common goal. To create an exemplary School for boys. A safe, inclusive environment where we value the voice of each individual and seek to promote our core values of Compassion, Integrity, Determination and Social Responsibility.

Our Foundation cohort continues to create a pathway and recently embarked on their Year 12 journey. Dylan Cleven and Mitchell Graham were elected as our first School Captains and together with their peers lead the boys’ and create a legacy that both they and the School can be proud of.

Academically, we continue to strive for excellence. In the Junior School, the recent PYP Evaluation and PYP Exhibition clearly highlighted that Berwick Grammar is providing a high, student-centred standard of education. While in the Senior School, Continuous Online Reporting has been most successful providing parents and boys with timely and informative feedback. Semester tests and examinations teach our boys the skills on how best to prepare and undertake timed written assessments, equipping them for VCE. Several of our boys recently completed their VCE examinations. This was a memorable moment for the staff and students as a significant milestone was reached.

Our commitment to, and participation in the Southern Independent Schools Association has been most rewarding. The formidable teams at Berwick Grammar have trained hard and through their exceptional sportsmanship have competed at the highest level with distinction. In 2013 we have been Champions in the areas of swimming, basketball, table tennis, cross-country and cricket. These are outstanding achievements when comparing the size of our School with that of our rivals.

As a School we continue to build on our reputation in the areas of Art and Culture. Across all year levels our boys put

their artistic and creative talents on display at the SIS Art and Technology Exhibition. Our debating teams achieved some ground breaking results with the School winning its first titles. Congratulations must be extended to Noah Kent from Year 8for recently winning the Swannie Award for debating. The Swannie Award is presented to the best speaker in each division across all schools in the region. Noah was also shortlisted to the top 5 out of 3000 students for the State Swannie Award.

The music program has gone from strength to strength. Our participation in numerous festivals, including the SIS, South Eastern Arts and Melbourne Bands Festival, illustrates how hard our boys and the staff are working to proudly fly the BGS flag where ever and whenever possible. The annual Berwick Grammar School In Concert is fast becoming a highlight on the School calendar. Even more entertaining than before, the extraordinary talents of our musicians were on show. The uplifting performance of the Berwick Blokes and Senior Concert Band is testament to the enthusiasm and dedication ofMrs Hambly, Mr Grimmett and the instrumental staff.

2013 has brought with it another string of successes for the Human Powered Vehicle Squad. The senior boys team performed exceptionally well winning the Casey Bass Coast HPV Series and the crown jewel by winning both the Trial and Overall RACV Energy Breakthrough event, a first for the School.

Berwick Grammar would not be the School it is today without the talented, enthusiastic and passionate staff who work unrelentingly to educate, support and guide your son. Their positivity, humour and ‘can do’ attitude is refreshing and infectious. Through positive and caring relationships they have inspired a sense of the extraordinary and been able to provide your son with the platform for success.

As an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, St Margaret’s provides an internationally recognised program that combines the best research and practice from around the world. The Primary Years Programme (PYP) model creates a relevant, engaging and challenging educational framework for all students from the Early Learning Centre through to Year 6.

2013 was a significant year in our PYP journey as the focus was firmly on our scheduled IB program evaluation. Months of reflection, work and preparation by the Junior School staff, students and parents meant that everything was ready for the visit team when they arrived in August for a two day visit which involved time spent at both our Junior campuses – Berwick and Officer.

The feedback and report from the IB was extremely postive and reaffirming with a number of commendations, some of which included:

• the governing body, administrative and pedagogical leadership team and staff displayed a deep level of knowledge a, commitment and support in the understanding of IB philosophy;

• the school demonstrates a strong commitment to the continual improvement of the programme;

• the school has collaboratively developed essential agreements and scope and sequence documents to support a common understanding of overall expectations for student learning;

• the school has built a stimulating learning environment based on understanding and respect throughout the school community.

This further emphasised our commitment to and belief in the framework and philosophy of this program. We have shared understandings about learning and work collaboratively to ensure the needs of our students are met. The focus of our Professional Learning Teams (PLTs) is always on how we can continue to improve classroom practices. This is facilitated through shared discussions and observation related to planning, assessment and teaching practices which are a key feature of the new PYP model: approaches to teaching and approaches to learning.

Whilst we aim to provide a balanced curriculum that allows students to experience success and development across all areas (academic, personal and social), it is important to note that throughout 2013 our Junior students continued to demonstrate high levels of academic achievement as evidenced through outstanding results in NAPLAN testing and various other competitions and tests.

We are proud of the varied opportunities we provide that prepare our students to be positive, active and ethical citizens in an interconnected and changing world.

Our staff are committed to implementing innovative teaching and learning strategies that focus on the individual strengths of each student. We endeavour to create a challenging, enriching and supportive learning environment where each student is able to achieve their best.

Assessment and reporting practices at St Margaret’s and Berwick Grammar are designed to provide essential feedback on academic progress to our students and their parents. The development of our Continuous Online Reporting program has enabled the school community access to student learning data in a timely fashion and has allowed teachers to more effectively communicate progress with students, parents and other teachers. The benefits of Continuous Online Reporting are supported by current educational research which supports our view of the importance that timely and informative feedback plays in improving student learning outcomes.

The teaching staff at St Margaret’s and Berwick Grammar School have been working diligently in teams in order to further develop best practice in teaching and learning. These Professional Learning Teams enable small groups of teachers to analyse student learning data, observe the lessons of other teachers and to undertake academic research in order to teach in ways that challenge every learner and provide a clearly structured and rigorous program of learning. Throughout 2013 our students continued to demonstrate high levels of academic achievement. Outstanding VCE results and high levels of performance in NAPLAN testing are just two indicators of this success. The Summit Program has been established to enhance the myriad of opportunities that exist for extension and enrichment across both St Margaret’s and Berwick Grammar School. An extensive list of programs such as the Maths Master Classes, the Maths Olympiad, Tournament of Minds, DAV debating, Language Study Tours and ICAS testing are just a sample of some of the programs available for students.

The ongoing improvement in teaching and learning strategies, combined with a vibrant and engaging curriculum ensures that we are best placed to maximise the potential of each individual student.

PERFORMING ARTS

The magnificent 2013 Production of The Wizard of Oz was a fitting start to a busy and fulfilling year for the Performing Arts Department. The cast of over 100 students sang, danced and acted their way through this all-time favourite. Record audiences from our school and wider community were awe struck by the professionalism of the cast, crew and orchestra.

The VCE Classical Singers Day in May saw 12 VCE students from in and around Melbourne come together as part of a Performng Arts Department initiative. Renowned singer and teacher, Suzanne Johnston gave an afternoon workshop and the evening saw the singers, dressed in evening wear, presenting two songs from their VCE repertoire for an audience.

The third Annual Master’s Recital was held in June. After a series of arduous auditions, ten students were selected to perform in this prestigious recital. All students must be 7th Grade (AMEB or equivalent) or above on their chosen instrument, so the quality of the recital was very professional. Gippsland and Mountain Districts Assessing award one performer the Master Musicians Award and in 2013 this was awarded to Year 11 singer, Tianna Ismail.

Music camps on both campuses took place in the lead up to the Annual Concerts. The Music Camp day is a valuable time to rehearse all groups in an uninterrupted environment. Much detailed work is done on these days with the culminations being the high standard of performance.

All campuses held wonderful School Concerts during the months of August and September. The concerts are a showcase of the talents of our dedicated musicians from Year 2 to 12. Soloists, choirs, chamber ensembles, rock bands, concert bands, string groups and orchestras entertained the packed houses. The four concerts over the two months were a huge success and testimony to the many hours of hard work by students and staff.

The Victorian Schools Music Festival held at The Deakin Edge in Federation Square was another opportunity for our Symphonic Wind Ensemble to display their talents. They performed two pieces and received a Silver Medal in the Intermediate category, which was a higher category than the previous year. As expected, our students stage presence and performance behaviour was immaculate.

October saw the Official Launch of the Victorian School of Performing Arts (VSPA), an over-arching branch of our Performing Arts school, which will see our wider community having the opportunity to enjoy the facilities and activities and events on offer. The event featured famous singer/actor, Tim Campbell who officially launched the school. After giving a wonderful speech about how he became involved in the performing arts, Tim sang Shout with the orchestra and three backing singers. The evening also included polished performances by the Combined Stage Bands, Unit 4 Monologue performances and tours of the newly renovated performing arts building. Tutors from all musical disciplines held workshops with their students as demonstrations for the guests walking through. With over 400 people at the VSPA Launch there was much interest in the programs on offer for 2014.

The end of the year was a busy time for the performers who never seemed to stop. The choirs and instrumental groups were heavily involved in Speech Night and Presentation Nights. The Chamber Voices carolled at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Hospital – something which we have done for 28 consecutive years. Our Christmas Carols event was cancelled due to inclement weather, however, the Junior School still held their Prep Nativity, Pre-Prep Christmas concerts and a special Christmas assembly. Year 7 to 9 SMS Themes and Dreams involves music students putting together pieces to play, arranging the music, rehearsing groups and performing. This year was again a great success in this area.

With a large proportion of students learning a musical instrument, many solid and professional standard ensembles, dedicated and happy music staff, 2013 was another highly successful year for Performing Arts at St Margaret’s and Berwick Grammar School.

SPORT AND EXTRA-CURRICULAR

St Margaret’s School, ELC to Year 6Students in the Junior School at St Margaret’s have the opportunity to participate and compete in many various programs throughout the year. The programs are designed not only to challenge the students physically, but also to develop resiliency and a sense of community. All ages from ELC to Year 6 compete in House events including cross country, athletics, Jump Rope for Heart and a weekly walking program. Through these activities the students are taught the benefits of participation and teamwork.

As the children grow and develop there are more opportunities for them to expand on the skills acquired in their younger years.Through School Sport Victoria, students in Year 3 to 6 may represent the school in individual sports such as swimming, cross country and athletics for representation as district, divisional, regional and state competitors. The same opportunity applies for those who display ability in the more traditional team sports.

All girls in Year 5 and 6 participate in weekly interschool sporting matches and various round robin competitions that enabled them to experience a wide variety of team sports. The girls developed team skills through practice and preparation for many events including our St Margaret’s Netball Challenge, Hoop Time Basketball and the Casey Soccer Tournament.

Berwick Grammar School, Year 5 and 62013 saw a great many sporting opportunities for our youngest students at BGS and innumerable successes throughout the year. Our Year 5 and 6 students joined forces with their counterparts from St Margaret’s Junior School in many of our interschool competitions over the year.

The combined swimming team were crowned champions in the SSV Berwick District carnival in Term 1 with a total of six swimmers progressing to the next stage of competition. The focus turned to cross country in Term 2, with our combined

team performing exceptionally well in the District carnival finishing in second place overall out of the seven schools that participated. In Term 3 our athletics teams trained exceptionally hard and were rewarded for their efforts with another fine second place finish in the District carnival.

We again entered combined teams in the two Lightning Premierships held in Term 2 and 4. All students are expected to compete in a sport of their choice in these competitions with the focus on participation more than the overall result. Our teams were nonetheless determined to perform at their best, with our football and mixed softball teams being crowned champions and our basketball, mixed ultimate frisbee and mixed teeball teams coming second.

We had teams entered in many other sporting competitions over the course of the year. A large number of our boys enjoyed playing in the Hooptime Basketball competition, the Casey North Divisional Softball championships, the Milo T20 Blast and Southern Metropolotan Regional Hardball Cricket competitions and the Regional Lacrosse championships to name a few.

Several individuals performed admirably within specific sports throughout the year. Many of these progressed to Regional finals within particular sports. Ashley Chandrasinghe’s selection in the Victorian Under-13 cricket team for the second consecutive year was particularly impressive. He competed in this team at the Australian School Championships during which his team remained undefeated and were crowned national champions.

With so many sporting opportunities and successes throughout 2013 our students certainly had a busy year.

St Margaret’s School, Year 7 to 12 Girls at St Margaret’s School are offered extensive opportunities to participate in competitive sport in one of the largest independent school sporting associations in the state, Girls Sport Victoria (GSV). 2013 was yet another busy year of outstanding success for St Margaret’s students both in terms of participation in such a wide range of sports as well as elite achievement by a number of teams and individuals.

Whether competing in the GSV, House sport at St Margaret’s, or even trying their hand at a new sport in a non-competitive environment, girls are encouraged to participate and enjoy the many benefits of being involved in sport and physical activity at our school.

Brianna Behrsin (Year 10) placed 2nd in the intermediate sprint GSV triathlon and Olivia Weston (Year 8) placed 3rd in the junior mini GSV triathlon.

Tennis• Our senior tennis team were A grade zone champions and

made it to the GSV finals played at Melbourne Park.

Softball• Our senior softball team were A grade zone champions

and made it to the GSV finals played at Jells Park.

Netball• Chloe Phillips (Year 11) and Lauren Hargreaves (Year 11)

were selected in the GSV representative netball team that competed in Sydney in the tri-state challenge.

Football• Our senior football team won the minor final finishing 3rd

overall in A grade.

Basketball• Sophia Locandro (Year 7) was selected in the Victorian

12 and under team which competed at nationals in Perth.

Cricket• Our senior cricket team were undefeated throughout the

entire season becoming premiers in the Senior A division.

In addition to the wide range of sports offered by the GSV, St Margaret’s students also have access to our highly successful school cycling and Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) teams. St Margaret’s have a dedicated Equestrian team and run our own show jumping event each year during Term 2.

Berwick Grammar School, Year 7 to 112013 has been an outstanding year for Berwick Grammar School with some fantastic achievements in the SIS Sports Competitions. The Southern Independent Schools (SIS) is made up of thirteen private schools and the level of competition is strong. For a small school BGS has produced some amazing results and with the hard work and commitment from the students and staff the list of achievements from the boys for 2013 is impressive.

Term 1 saw the SIS Swimming Carnival taking place at MSAC. Berwick Grammar School’s Under 15 and Under 17 swimming squads crowned SIS champions after some superb individual and team efforts. In addition to this, our Under 14 swimming squad came 2nd and our Under 13 squad finished 3rd in their respective competitions. Another highlight of Term 1 was our Senior Soccer Team reaching the grand final which was narrowly lost 1-0.

The focus shifted to cross-country in Term 2. Our Under 14 and Under 15 cross-country teams were crowned SIS champions with our Under 13 team narrowly finishing in 2nd place in the interschool event at Baxter Park. Our Year 7 and 8 Junior teams experienced great successes in the weekly sport competitions with SIS championship winning performances in both basketball and table tennis. In the same term our Year 9 and 10 basketball team played consistently well and reached the finals.

Term 3 highlights included our Senior (Year 11) basketball team reaching the SIS finals in which they were beaten by a 3 point shot in the dying seconds of the match. Our Junior tennis and cricket teams won their SIS Championships. The SIS Athletics Carnival saw our Under 17 Athletics squad being crowned champions at Lakeside Stadium. Zone Mountain Biking also took place this term with some outstanding achievements from the BGS boys. Stefan Cotroneo and Lachlan Clarke won their respective events, Max Blackwood finished a strong second and both David Somers and Sam Clarke placing third.

Our Year 7 and 8 teams again experienced great successes in Term 4, winning the Cricket and Tennis Championships. The Cycling State Finals took place towards the end of the term with our BGS team winning the overall award. David Somers was crowned state champion and Max Blackwood won the silver medal in their respective events.

There has been some real high in the SIS Sports competitions during 2013. If the boys show the same level of dedication, commitment and ambition, they will be able to further build on these achievements in 2014.

STUDENT LEADERSHIPAND SERVICE

‘In the Primary Years Programme (PYP), it is believed that education must extend beyond the intellectual to include not only socially responsible attitudes but also thoughtful and appropriate action.’ (Making the PYP Happen 2009, p25). This action component of the PYP can involve service in the widest sense of the word; service to fellow students and to the broader community, both in and outside the school; and this informs and inspires the work undertaken by our Junior School student leadership team.

Our 2013 School Captains, Darcy Hetherington and Madeline Bailey were excellent role models as they fulfilled their roles and worked closely with and supported the other leadership positions including Year 6, House, Music, Sport, Art, Environment Captains as well as the Peer Mediators. The Year 6 Captains, Jamieson Dykes and Adelaide Paternoster worked closely with Ms Reed and members of the Student Representative Council to organise a variety of social service events and activities throughout the year including registration of St Margaret’s School’s first Relay for Life team.

Berwick Grammar School continued to contribute to the wider community through many avenues. The Year 9 Endeavour boys were involved in many community service initiatives including visiting classrooms at St Margaret’s Junior School and Marnabek School and preparing food for a local food van. Our Year 6 cohort continued their excellent work within the Harmony Project. Term 4 saw the first senior student leaders appointed to our school. Mitchell Graham and Dylan Cleven, the inaugural School Captains, led these Captains and the school admirably through Term 4.

St Margaret’s senior girls are encouraged to develop public speaking and leadership skills throughout their years in the Senior School. There are many opportunities for the girls to volunteer and be elected in positions such as Class, Student Council, Social Service, Magazine, Environment and House Representatives. Through these positions they learn and develop collaboration, organisational and leadership skills.

Public speaking skills are developed through the English program and supported by Debating, House and OGA Speaking events.

In Year 9 the girls demonstrate and utilise these skills in leading Middle School Assemblies and Themes and Dreams House activities. In Year 10, the girls lead the Upper School Assemblies and in Year 11 and 12 the girls take a leading role in all activities including but not exclusive to fund raising initiatives, speaking at general assemblies, official openings such as VSPA and the VCE Centre, promoting the school musical, mentoring in the Junior School Science Club program, speaking to parents at VCE information nights, organising Duke of Edinburgh activities and speaking at the GSV Sport Captains’ breakfast.

Students extended their global citizenship through the exchange programs to York, Aberdeen and New Zealand. Global awareness was also extended in the area of Social Service as money was raised to support Lombok Kids through the work of Bryn Rafferty-Brown and Agape Orphanage through Emma and Mark Easton.

The school also supported Sophie Weston in her efforts to raise money for Love Your Sister where she rode 800 km solo from Canberra to Melbourne in support of research into breast cancer.

Year 9 students extended service to the community through J Time and Mission for a Mission. And the school continues to support programs such as Red Cross, Christmas Shoeboxes Project and Christmas hampers for the Berwick Benevolent Society.
