“WE FORM THROUGH EDUCATION,
YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN AS
LEADERS IN THE LIGHT AND THE
TRUTH OF THE GOSPEL.”

School year 2016-2017 was another great year for Aquinas.
Coming off the anniversary year spirit was high and enthusiasm
was great. Continued improvements were seen throughout the
school. The Academic Council continued its on-going work of
providing the very best curriculum to prepare our students for
college. The on-going use of the iPad technology, the further
initiation of the block schedule and the implementation of new
course offerings provided the excellent opportunity for student
growth.
Athletics are always a favorite of the students and this year they
were definitely thrilled with the performances of our teams, both
boys and girls. Just about every team progressed to the CIF playoffs
with the football team getting to the championship game only to
lose by one point in the closing moments. With the performances of this year and the returning
athletes, the 17-18 season should be quite an interesting one for most teams. Win or lose we are
proud of our student athletes.
Of the most importance to us is the spiritual formation of the students. Through the leadership
of the Campus Ministry Program, the Religion classes and the support of the faculty. We are
grateful for the opportunities that have been developed for the students and parents. Our
mission challenges us to form these young men and women to be leaders in the light and truth
of the Gospel of Jesus and that is what we are doing are best to do.
Like last year, there will be many activities and loads of occasions for Alumni and friends to
become engaged with Aquinas. The Homecoming Game and the Holy War should be
exceptionally exciting this year. As usual we will have an Alumni Zone prepared for the
Alumni that make it to Homecoming.
While in 2016-2017 we began to build. In 2017-2018 we will see the hopes and dreams of the
new Performing Arts Center rise up. We have lived through the construction phase and now
anxiously await the time when we will be able to enjoy these new buildings. What a blessing to
have the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, Shea Family Charities and our loyal supporters.
We are most grateful for the on-going support of the Aquinas Alumni and Friends. Without
your support, the great students of this area might not have the Aquinas experience which can
certainly prepare them for their next step in their career.
Many thanks for all that you do for these deserving students. I hope to see you on campus soon.
My prayers and best wishes
Dr. Jim Brennan

FINANCIAL REPORT 2016-2017
Fiscal Year 2016-2017 was a challenging one. Enrollment was strong but not as strong as we
anticipated. That was coupled by the fact that the need for financial aid was the largest we have
ever had. An enrollment of 420 students was a good one for Aquinas, but we had hoped for 440.
The economy was identified as a primary reason for less enrollment. However, our international
enrollment held strong and greatly aided our efforts. Forty-eight international students were
welcomed to Aquinas.
As you look at this year’s Financial Report it will be a bit deceiving because all donations need to
be included. We have and will address the building project in another place but some of its figures
by policy appear here. We are nowhere near as rich as the report would indicate. We are, however,
moving forward financially, not being rich but meeting our financial demands.
The significant factor in our financial situation was the growing need for financial aid for qualified
students. We have some very deserving local young students that we are working very hard to help.
Over 60% of our local students qualified for financial aid. The amount of aid granted was over
$700,000 to these deserving students. We work diligently to help these students so that they are
able to move on to receive a college education after Aquinas.
Fundraising events are still a significant part of our financial plan and our community building
activities. The Casino Night, Golf Tournament and the Alumni Scholarship Dinner were able to
gross over $250, 000. The SCRIP program is included in this. We are grateful to all who support
these important events.
Third source funding will continue to be a necessity in the financial success of Aquinas.
Foundations such as the San Manuel Band of Indians, the Shea Family Charities, the Hannon
Foundation, the Fontana Foundation of Hope and the St. Augustine Foundation are very much
appreciated for their support. However, our need goes beyond these generous organizations.
Core to the success of a third source funding program is the alumni and friends of a school.
Aquinas still continues to grow in this area. We have twelve students receiving full scholarships
from alumni and friends of Aquinas and others who receive partial scholarships. The point of
noting this is to say thank you to all donors of Aquinas. We have been blessed with a couple of
large donations and recipient of on-going donations. There are a growing number who have chosen
to donate on a monthly basis. It may be $25 or more but it is all important and all greatly
appreciated. Thank you to all who care about the students of Aquinas and have stepped forward to
enable them to continue their success in school.
Aquinas is moving forward. Your support is important and appreciated. Your contributions help us
to reach out to students who might not otherwise have access to a Catholic education.
