2016-2017

has been another very

successful year for Home-

Start Glasgow South. We

have continued to grow

and provide more targeted

support in partnership

with referrers across the

city. For example, we have

taken over 70 referrals from the Joint Support Teams (JST) this year.

Responding to demand…

In recognition of the intense support some families require, we have

created a new role – Family Support Worker. We are also investing in

more skilled resource for fundraising activity by hiring a Fundraising

Manager. This recognises the increase in our funding need as we grow

and the need to diversify our sources of funding. Finally, we have hired

two new playworkers.

Expanding our services…

We are keen to stay true to our core services and not diversify too

widely. Our model is proven to work and as such our strategy going

forward will be to grow geographically in addition to providing more

support in the areas we already cover.

I am delighted that we achieved excellent results in our Home-Start quality

assurance audit, indicating we manage the growth without sacrificing standards.

Colette Boyle, our Scheme Director, has taken a place on the Home-Start Scottish

Committee with a view to influencing the strategic direction of Home-Start in

Scotland.

Overall, I am very proud that we have supported 292 families with 623 children in total this year. remarkable 100%!

In February we received the final results of our recent QA Review.

We are extremely pleased to report that we successfully met

all 77 criteria points and scored a

The Home-Start Quality Assurance system is accredited by Home-Start UK and endorsed by The Charity Commission

Of course, we couldn’t do any of this without

our funders. I would like to extend my

personal thanks to all our funders, big or

small. Whilst our financial position looks

healthy, we can’t afford to rest on our laurels,

each year is a challenge and every penny

counts. Competition is fierce out there. We

must look to the Corporate Sector and other

means of income generation to deliver a

‘mixed economy’ which will de-risk our future.

We continue to be recognised and nominated for

awards and receive consistent, heart-warming

feedback from the families we support. None of this

would be possible without the hard work of our staff

and the selflessness of our volunteers and volunteer

board members. I have been honoured to work

alongside such individuals.

Unfortunately, this is my last year as chair. I will be

handing over the baton to a new chair for the 2017-

2018 year and I wish them and all the team the very

best for the future.

Our Thanks To our funding Partners….

And Special Thanks To…

A new year and a New Website!

This year we’re launching a

brand new website, which will

give us a new and dynamic

digital portal through which to

share news and events, better

communicate our activities and

services to referrers, families

and funders, and deliver an

expanded view of volunteering

opportunities with Home-Start

Glasgow South to prospective

volunteers.

The site will evolve throughout

the coming year as more

features are incorporated, such

as online training and event

booking, online volunteer

application forms, digital

feedback options, impact

updates, galleries, videos and

much more!

Log on, let us know what you

think, and if you want to see

anything else, let us know and

we’ll add it! Feedback welcome!

Martin at Bannister & Gasp Printers, who year after year insists on providing ALL of our printed

leaflets, flyers, posters etc. free of charge, despite our continued best efforts to reimburse him!

We couldn’t do what we do

without the ongoing support

of others. We want to extend

our gratitude to everyone

who has helped us this year

by providing direct funding,

or by engaging in fundraising

activities. You are all amazing!

A Unique Perspective

Every year we crunch

numbers to try to

understand the impact

we’ve had on local

families, and to try to

work out how to evolve

our service to better

meet their needs.

Something we’ve

noticed this year is that

there is a substantial

difference between

the family needs

identified in referrals

and those identified by

families to our staff

at their initial visit to

the family.

Over the past three

years our data shows

that families have

consistently highlighted

more needs, more

frequently, to our staff

during their first visit,

than we see being

detailed by referrers.

What we believe this shows is the strength of our position as an independent

and inclusive source of support to families. Our unique method of

working and position within the wider local support network gives us the

opportunity to see families from a unique perspective, to build stronger

relationships and to gain better insights into the specific needs and

requirements of families, all enabling us to implement more effective support.

Our se co nd

e s t a b l i s h e d

parent and child centred group of the week

takes place in Penilee, and provides a focal

point for Mums, Dads and children in the

community at which they can meet other families

in the area. The group gives parents the time to spend

with their children, and helps parents who may be

isolated, or struggling to find the confidence to get out

and about, by offering a safe

space in which families can get to know one another, children can get involved in heaps

of fun activities, and learn through play with their parents, and other kids.

NEW for 2017,

our Mums’ Group

offers Mums the

time and space to relax

a n d s p e n d t i m e

socialising with other

Mums while enjoying a

diverse range of activities

including Yoga, Arts & Crafts,

Massage, Walks and more! The

group is Mum focussed, Mum led

and strictly Mums only! (No kids!)

Our hugely popular Castlemilk

Toddle In group is currently

running at capacity and our new

Play Workers will enable us to

create new groups in the area to

meet the extra demand. Toddle

In gives parents the opportunity

to meet other parents and share

parenting experiences, and

families in the local community

the opportunity to come

together with their children, to

play together, and become

involved in other fun activities.

Our Services in 2017: Home-Visiting

147 families (that’s 578 Mums, Dads and

children!) have benefitted from home visits from

our volunteers this year.

Family Support Groups

276 children from 150 families attend our

regular weekly groups.

English Tutoring

24 families (with 46 Mums & Dads and 51

children) have improved their basic English

language skills with the help of our Volunteer

English Tutors.

Translating Our volunteer translators help us to engage

families whose first language is not English in

support and can also help them to access

services and connect with their communities.

English Group 12.45-2.45pm

We work with

many families

each year who

have been granted leave

to remain in the UK, or

who have arrived in the

UK seeking Asylum. Our

designed to give families

whose first language is

not English the chance to

learn basic language

skills which help them

integrate into their

communities.

Every year Dads’ Group continues to go from strength to

strength. Now starting its third year at Gowanbank Primary

School, our Dads’ Group is constantly evolving and is gaining an impressive reputation

for its work with local Dads, not only here in Glasgow, but also elsewhere around

Scotland, becoming the subject of parliamentary receptions, and

attracting visitors from other organisations keen to discover what

makes it so effective at engaging and retaining Dads.

Wednesday

As demand for our service continues to grow,

we’re creating new support mechanisms,

running more courses and expanding our

groups even further. To do this we’re employing

more staff, two new Play Workers, a Family

Support Worker and a new Family Support Co-

ordinator, and at the same time investing in

extra fundraising resources, and further

training for existing staff.

Keep an eye on our website for announcements

about new Groups, or changes to existing ones,

and to find out more about any of our services,

how they can help you, or someone you know,

just give us a call at any time on 0141 570 8735!

Toddle In 10-11.30am

Toddle In has

been particularly

beneficial to some of

our refugee families, increasing

confidence, helping parents

become integral components of

their community and helping to

form strong friendships with

other families with much deeper

roots.

Parent & Tots Group 1.15-2.45pm

Ladies Group is one of our longest serving,

and most popular groups. The support

Ladies Group offers to isolated Mums today

has been finely tuned using the knowledge and experience we’ve

gained over many years running it, and it is now considered a

lifeline by many of the Mums who join us every Friday morning.

Ladies Group gets Mums involved in a huge variety of activities each

week, from Arts & Crafts to Yoga, and from Cooking to Walking and

Massage. There is also a Crèche available, so Mums can enjoy five

minutes peace too!

Income Diversification:

Having enjoyed huge success with our three year

plan to 2017, growing significantly in the period to

become the largest Home-Start in Scotland, and one

of the largest in the UK, our next challenge is to

secure our position and focus on further improving

the quality, selection and accessibility of our services

for even more local families.

Our new three year strategy includes big plans to do

this and we are working hard to diversify our income

streams, reduce our reliance on one major sponsor,

and attract new supporters who can help us to both

design and implement new services and expand our

proven existing models into new geographical areas.

Funding for charitable organisations like ours has

become increasingly competitive over recent years

and we would like to once again extend our thanks to

our long term friends and newest partners for

placing their faith in the tireless work of our staff and

volunteers in supporting local parents and children.
