Our MissionHOPE worldwide changes lives by harnessing the compassion and commitment of dedicated staff and volunteers to deliver sustainable, high-impact, community-based services to the poor and needy.
The King will reply, ‘Truly
I tell you, whatever you did
for one of the least of these
brothers and sisters of
mine, you did for me.’
– Jesus (Matthew 25:40 NIV)
Dear Friend,
2018 was a tremendous year for HOPE worldwide. We are so proud of the many who gave, served and worked tirelessly to help people in need around the world. If you contributed, volunteered or raised funds, you were part of the team bringing hope to so many. Children from Africa to Alaska now have a vision for their future. Volunteers from Cambodia to Kathmandu have loved and served people in need. From Boston to Brazil, the suffering have witnessed firsthand God’s love and concern. This year our team members gave food to the hungry, shelter to the homeless and clothing to the naked. We are honored to serve the poor, the vulnerable and the marginalized from every race, color and creed on every inhabited continent. Thank you for your support and your part on our team. Our strength is our volunteers – we are able to do what we do because we have ready, willing and able volunteers in so many cities worldwide. Our partners value us because they know if they need ‘boots on the ground’ HOPE worldwide can be there quickly.
As a faith-based organization dedicated to following the directive of Jesus to love our neighbors, we are so encouraged about the disaster response teams in hard-hit regions of North America and Indonesia. HOPE worldwide’s Global Disaster Response and Relief program brings hope and change to vulnerable communities through disaster preparedness and emergency relief. We also work to rebuild affected communities. The SPARK Academy in Houston has been a beacon of love to many children traumatized by the floods of Hurricane Harvey. The list of the many programs and volunteers who have impacted lives through their love and service is long and inspiring.
HOPE worldwide has responded to global natural disasters and provided necessary relief for twenty years. We have dedicated ourselves to three main areas of service: Volunteerism, Disaster Relief and Community Empowerment. Today, we serve more than 1.5 million people annually on every inhabited continent. Our volunteers serve in more than 60 countries. Our sustainable community programs, early childhood development training and ESL courses support those in need and prepare them for success.
The year 2018 gave us a great opportunity for service and love provided by our many volunteers around the world. We are grateful to be able to be part of the team that brings hope to the hopeless around the world.
Sincerely,
Robert Carrillo
President and CEO, HOPE worldwide

Jesus’ example is at the center of
everything we do. HOPE worldwide’s
staff and volunteers strive to imitate
His example of unconditional love and
compassion for the poor – without
regard to faith or background. After
more than 25 years, HOPE worldwide
continues to be a community dedicated
to serving, teaching and healing
families made vulnerable due to
poverty, disease or disaster, enabling
them to rise out of their desperate
situations. Together we are bringing
hope and changing lives for good.

HOPE worldwide – Volunteer Corps 5
Spanning the globe with 28
different programs, HOPE
worldwide Volunteer Corps
mobilizes volunteers to care
for the most vulnerable among
us. We focus on high-impact,
sustainable programs that
provide a variety of services
from rehabilitation in disaster-
stricken communities to medical
services and healthcare training,
vocational training and social
services, sustainable agriculture
and community and leadership
development. Our volunteers
are incredibly diverse: they hail
from all continents and socio-
economic strata, and range in age
from teens to septuagenarians.
Our volunteers frequently return
to the same sites multiple times,
believing we receive as much as
we give.
Local HOPE worldwide entities
benefit from programs that educate
people in the coordination of global
service teams. As such, college
students train as Global Service
Interns (GSI) to run Volunteer Corps.
We have had over 70 graduates of
this training program. Part of our
mission is to inspire volunteers not
just to make service a once-in-a-
lifetime experience, but to instill a
love for it that transforms them into
lifelong advocates for the poor.
Recently HOPEww Volunteer Corps
(HVC) members traveled to New
Zealand and discovered that just
two weeks of involvement by 40
volunteers can make a significant
impact. Volunteers worked the
land, planted a vegetable garden
and built a greenhouse to aid
in the community’s agricultural
sustainability. They also connected
on a cultural level, seeking to learn
the values of the Maori community.
One area of emphasis at HVC is
the need for respectful service and
mutuality. We learn at least as much
as we teach. Volunteers in Auckland
have built a foundation for a strong
and sustainable relationship with
the local Maori community thanks
to the two weeks of effort by HVC
members. HVC’s goal is continued
service to the community and
the establishment of a long-term
and more comprehensive HOPE
worldwide assistance program.
Over 7,500 miles to the north,
The Gateway to the Arctic (G2A)
Camp Volunteer Corps program in
Alaska has had a distinct impact.
The program teaches hands-
on skills ranging from carpentry
and agriculture to life skills for
people with special needs. Those
participants with special needs are
paired with typically functioning
participants to learn and practice
these new skills for a period of time.
The result is a powerful partnership
and increased self-confidence.
At the camp young people like
Michael and Makayla experience
hands-on gardening, a variety of
fun-filled activities, and time spent in
nature. They also form lasting and
supportive friendships, all because
of the volunteers’ willingness to
serve. Thanks to HOPE worldwide
Volunteer Corps, many differently-
abled people in Alaska have caring
instruction, mentoring and an outlet
for outdoor fun.
VOLUNTEER CORPS
HOPE worldwide
In 2018, we had over 700 volunteers. Of those, roughly 200 were teens, 200 were campus students, 200 were singles, and another 100 were married people or families.

Adventure CorpsHOPE worldwide Adventure Corps is
a research-based leadership, survival
and service training experience in
Anchorage, Alaska. We believe that
the wilderness is the perfect training
ground for leadership instruction
and character development. We
reach out to unique individuals with
an adventurous spirit to experience
service in the wilderness. Volunteers
conduct wilderness training,
vocational services and community
development programs for kids and
young people with special needs. We
train leaders who will go back to their
communities and make a difference.
Campus ClubsHOPE worldwide Campus Clubs
are service clubs located in Texas,
Alaska, Oregon and Arizona with a
focus on college student volunteer
mobilization. Since our launch in July
2018, seven Campus Clubs have
been established and are actively
serving those in need. We inspire
and train college students in the US
to serve in their local communities
by helping them establish a
HOPEww Campus Club at their
university, and we provide ongoing
leadership training.
Fabrice Ntalindwa, a freshman at
The University of Texas at San
Antonio, joined a team serving in
Houston, Texas just weeks after
Hurricane Harvey devastated
the city. Later on in the following
semester, he joined the HOPEww
Campus Club at UTSA and became
an officer. He is now in charge of
creating service events for other
students to come and volunteer.
“I have learned that in order to summit, I have to climb above myself and participate in the ideas of others. I know myself better and have created an awareness of myself, my emotions and how to serve better!”

HOPE worldwide US operates
individual chapters in 117 cities
throughout the United States
and Puerto Rico; program
coordinators work with volunteers
who donate nearly 40,000 service
hours annually. The focus of these
local chapters is to serve the
needs of vulnerable populations
within a defined geographic area.
The goal is to mobilize as many
volunteers as possible to serve in
assorted sustainable programs,
and to form partnerships with
local businesses to provide a
variety of services. Volunteers
serve in nursing homes, medical
facilities, food pantries, homeless
shelters, Saturday Academies,
and after school and mentoring
programs. In the coming year,
our staff is preparing to launch
Early Childhood Development
and English Conversion Clubs
throughout the United States. This
year, over 975 people attended
“We Serve” workshops in seven
US cities. Volunteers of all ages,
from pre-teens and teens to college
students, single and married
adults and empty nesters, received
training in respectful, mutual and
sustainable ways to serve those in
need. In addition to ongoing service
programs, volunteers stepped up to
lend a hand quickly in the aftermath
of such devastating disasters as
hurricanes, wildfires and floods all
over the country.

With a mission of inspiring
and training young people for
meaningful service, US Youth
Programs operate principally
via two avenues: HOPEww
Scouts and the National Youth
Advisory Council (NYAC). Scout
troops currently serve in 31 US
cities. Troops are composed
of an average of 20 children
(K-8) and 35 parents, giving
us approximately 1,700 US
participants that meet and serve
together monthly.
NYAC concentrates on relationship-
focused Passion Projects. These
projects, student-inspired and
student-led, specifically target
community needs with sustainable
results. Each NYAC member designs
and leads both a fundraiser and an
ongoing Passion Project in their local
community. We also augmented our
capstone training component, The
Servant Leadership Academy, which
trains members to build and refine
sustainable community partnerships.
Nationwide, approximately 1,400
high school and campus volunteers
were mobilized by NYAC Passion
Projects.
Young people are also having an
impact on the world stage. For the
third consecutive year HOPEww
youth leaders participated in the
United Nations Compact for Young
People in Humanitarian Action.
NYAC members also served as
moderators for the Social Impact
Youth Summit hosted at Stanford
University by the UN Population
Fund, GOODdler and the Institute
for Evolutionary Leadership.
Karson Baldwin, NYAC member in
Cleveland, started a relationship-
based program called Oné Respé,
which is a Haitian greeting of
welcome that means “honor and
respect.” The program partners
American-born high school students
with immigrant and refugee youth
who have been in the US for less
than six months at the International
Newcomers Academy (INA). They
spend their time in friendship-
building activities and speaking
conversational English. Because
of their recent arrival to the US,
INA students have low English
proficiency. Many students, from
the Democratic Republic of Congo,
Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, the
Dominican Republic, El Salvador,
and Honduras, had schooling
interrupted in their countries. Some
had never even been to school.
None had an American friend before
this program began. According to
one INA teacher, “this authentic
purpose for using conversational
English with American peers has
been invaluable academically and
socially.” Students’ English reading
proficiency scores have improved
dramatically, something the school
attributes directly to the program.
American students are coming
to better understand immigration
and the global refugee crisis and
have grown to appreciate their new
friends’ funny, kind and curious
personalities, their hunger to learn
and eagerness to ask questions.
They have also come to respect the
newcomers for their strength and
resilience.

Global Disasters dominated the
world news in 2018. Floods,
hurricanes, earthquakes,
wildfires and volcanic eruptions
destroyed cities and devastated
populations. HOPE worldwide
quickly mobilized volunteers to
provide lifesaving service on
several continents.
Collaborating with local volunteers
and supporters, teams worked
together to make a lasting impact.
In North America alone, over 1,500
volunteers provided direct relief to
over 4,000 families.
At the global level, HOPE worldwide
continues to coordinate with
our global partners and relief
organizations. We consult with the
United Nations Economic and Social
Council (ECOSOC), the European
Union (EU) and the World Health
Organization (WHO).
Throughout Asia, HOPE worldwide’s
Global Disaster Response
program brings hope and change
to vulnerable communities with
disaster preparedness, emergency
relief and community rebuilding.
We deliver lifesaving services and
equip communities to reduce their
disaster risks. We also partner with
other agencies and organizations
to maximize impact and mobilize
volunteers.
In 2018, and in the wake of
devastating earthquakes and
floods, HOPE worldwide traveled
to 20 different sites and served
170,000 people in 20 disaster-
affected communities across the
globe by providing food, water,
shelter, healthcare, clothing and
psychosocial assistance. The
breakdown of supplies and services
is as follows:
• 35,558 lb of food
• 1,335 lb medical supplies
• 2,647 emergency shelters
• 1,019 hygiene kits
• 9,037 blankets
• 2,229 articles of clothing
• 53 water filters
• 13 latrines and water facilities
• 3 communal houses
• 1 three-room clinic
• 178 sessions of psychosocial
support activities (play, music, art
therapy)
GLOBAL DISASTER RESPONSE
HOPE worldwide
Global Disaster Response
HOPE worldwide – Global Disaster Response 13
Recently, the small village of Chhaimale,
Nepal was devastated by the magnitude
7.8 earthquake in Kathmandu. Eighty
percent of the houses in this small
pear farming village were destroyed
or severely damaged. After providing
lifesaving services in the initial
emergency period, HOPE worldwide,
in collaboration with HOPE worldwide
UK and HOPE worldwide Canada, also
helped build a community center that
aids in rebuilding the livelihood and
economy of Chhaimale’s citizens.
HOPE worldwide Global Disaster
Response teams also serve in North
America, South America and the
Caribbean. The year 2018 saw multiple
devastating disasters in this area of the
world, and volunteers were there to help.
In 2018, we partnered with Feed the
Children in two Florida panhandle
cities by providing a specially equipped
disaster response vehicle. The vehicle
was loaded with food and hygiene
products for over 1,000 families struck
by Hurricane Michael. Damage and
debris in Blountstown, Florida was
so severe, city officials canceled all
door-to-door Halloween activities.
Coming together with other charities,
HOPE worldwide and Feed the Children
parked the HOPE worldwide Global
Disaster Response trailer alongside
the Feed the Children semi-truck and
held a ‘trunk or treat’ event, distributing
food and hygiene products for families
throughout the area. Local churches
arranged a surprise visit from the
Florida State University Seminoles
Men’s Basketball and Baseball teams
who joined in the fun, handing out
candy and relief supplies, which made
the event even more special. A local
chamber of commerce member broke
down in tears of joy when witnessing
the event. “No one does this kind of
stuff for our community...every family
here thanks you.”
In response to the Vulcán de Fuego
eruption in Central America, HOPE
worldwide met the needs of vast
numbers of victims. We supplied
immediate relief with clean water,
medical care and temporary shelter.
In the wake of the displacement and
loss, mental health professionals also
provided counseling and therapy. With
this system, we have developed a multi-
faceted approach to disaster response
that promotes long-term healing.

Long-term healing is also a focus
in our US efforts. This year HOPE
worldwide received a $460,000 grant
from the American Red Cross for
the SPARK Academy in Houston,
Texas. SPARK stands for Special
Program for Arts Resilience for
Kids. Research shows that 12-18
months after a natural disaster is
the most vulnerable time for children
ages 5-12 to develop symptoms of
post-traumatic stress. SPARK uses
evidence-based research to develop
psychosocial activities that include
teaching character traits known to
increase resiliency.
Our curriculum provides a
confidence-building healing arts class
where children process loss and
gain confidence. The Champions of
Character class combines physical
activity with character-building
lessons. Our Theatre Expressions
class gives children a safe place
to express themselves. We also
incorporate a creative writing
segment that allows children to
process their thoughts about the
trauma they experienced in the
wake of a natural disaster.
We understand that natural disaster affects the whole family. Where most recovery programs focus on rebuilding after physical and structural damage, our program focuses on restoring psychological and emotional health. At the SPARK Academy, hundreds of families affected by Hurricane Harvey participate in the art, music and play program that provides children a safe place to talk and process emotional trauma brought on by the devastating hurricane.

The HOPE worldwide Community
Service Brigades are volunteer
teams that provide a wide range of
healthcare and medical services,
education, child development, social
services, disaster relief, recovery
and risk reduction and community
development and empowerment.
Community-based service brigades
build long-term partnerships with
local churches to equip them with the
tools needed to combat the effects of
extreme poverty in the communities
they serve. They conduct extended
programs for orphans and vulnerable
children. HOPE worldwide volunteers
provide direct relief and recovery,
and assist local HOPE worldwide
chapters, member organizations,
community agencies and church
partners. Currently, brigades serve
in Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico,
Puerto Rico, El Salvador and the
Ivory Coast. Over the past 10 years,
the Community Service Brigades
have provided approximately
36,000 patient visits and 58,000
prescriptions at free medical and
dental clinics throughout Central
America and Africa.
During an initial needs assessment
visit to San Pedro Sula, Honduras at
the end of 2009, HOPEww directors
saw firsthand the vast scope of
medical and dental needs of families
in Central America. They determined
that trustworthy outpatient medical
care should be the focus of the
brigades. Most residents in this
country earn less than $300 per
month and cannot afford access to
quality and reliable medical care. As
we head into our tenth year, we look
back and see that the goal to provide
a continuum of care for thousands
of patients has been accomplished.
Chronic diseases like diabetes, heart
disease and hypertension – as well
as frequently undiagnosed parasite
infestation – have been treated with
trustworthy medicine and follow-up
medical care.
Community Service Brigades
HOPE worldwide – Global Disaster Response 17
Over the past 10 years, the Community Service Brigades have provided approximately 36,000 patient visits and 58,000 prescriptions at free medical and dental clinics throughout Central America. Serving in the same communities for ten years has ensured a continuum of care for the CSB patients, who receive examinations and treatment that includes over-the-counter and prescription medicine as well as multivitamins and medications. Many of these patients, chronically sick and suffering with diabetes, hypertension, GERD and parasite infestation formerly went without benefit of this desperately needed medicine because they could not afford it for themselves or their children.

Community Empowerment
HOPE worldwide has established
and managed medical facilities and
clinics that provide excellent and
compassionate medical care to
those in need. The Sihanouk Hospital
Center of HOPE (SHCH) in the capital
city of Phnom Penh and the Sonja
Kill Memorial Hospital (SKMH) in
the southern city of Kampot are two
centers where Cambodian citizens
can receive high quality affordable
medical care. Since 1996, HOPE
worldwide’s medical work has
offered over 2.2 million consultations
to the poor and helped train over
5,000 medical professionals.
We provide high quality and affordable
medical care to Cambodians,
regardless of economic status. We
also provide meaningful training and
experience to Cambodian medical
professionals. In 2018, HOPEww
programs treated more than 220,000
patients. We expect the patient count to
increase in 2019.
As a result of HOPE worldwide’s efforts,
mother and child neonatal health in
Cambodia continues to improve. At
the beginning of 2018, the maternity
department averaged just over one
delivery per day. This number tripled
by the end of the year. Because of
the impact of the Sonja Kill Memorial
Hospital in Kampot, the hospital
welcomed over 1,000 successful live
births. The current birth rate averages
over 80 healthy babies per month. The
Women’s Health Center sees about
200 expectant mothers per month for
prenatal care. In the case of premature
deliveries, the Neonatal Intensive Care
Unit saves the lives of mothers and
children. Over 100 babies have received
lifesaving care in the hospital NICU in
the past year.

HOPE worldwide Early Childhood
Development (ECD) programs
focus on care and education for
orphans and vulnerable children,
social services, and volunteer
mobilization.
Research shows that 90% of a
child’s brain is fully developed by the
age of five. This makes the need for
early child development imperative,
and we work with both parents and
preschools to provide vulnerable
children with the best possible start
in life. With this goal in mind, we
established a new HOPE worldwide
ECD network for preschools. In
2018, over 25,000 children were
served and supported. We are
registered as an accredited training
organization by The Education,
Training and Development Practices
Sector Education and Training
Authority of South Africa.
HOPE worldwide SA is partnering
with KFC-Add Hope, a non-profit
foundation, to make a difference,
and we recently hosted the global
CEO of YUM! Brands, Greg Creed,
his leadership team and their South
African counterparts at one of the
many ECD centers we support. The
food company provides important
nutritional support to help students
learn. This support also frees up
funds to support teachers and
expand the services the centers can
provide. The program reaches over
18,000 children every month.
Worldwide effort and support

In Chicago, HOPE worldwide
initiated the Skyline After School

local community. Staff members
and volunteers empower middle
school students with the skills
required to succeed in school, live
up to their full potential, and in

offer homework tutoring, conduct
Social Emotional Learning-based

are showing significant emotional
growth. In the first semester of
programming, participants showed
a 23 percent improvement in

Many young people from
neighborhoods afflicted with poverty,
crime and addiction have difficult
home lives with little emotional
support. Skyline has become a safe

The Procurement Department of
HOPE worldwide partners with
other non-profit organizations
to provide in-kind donations for
medical facilities and disaster
relief. Procurement has provided
annual support in Cambodia for
the Sihanouk Hospital Center of
HOPE (SHCH) in Phnom Penh
and Sonja Kill Memorial Hospital
in Kampot since they opened.
Procurement also funds the
Community Service Brigades in
Tijuana, Mexico and throughout
Central America. The primary
focus is funding healthcare and
medical services, disaster relief,
recovery and risk reduction. Most
importantly, Procurement works
to build a gifts-in-kind (GIK)
program to benefit men, women
and children worldwide living in
extreme poverty and in dire need
of medical services.
Since the inception of the
program in August 1996, tens
of thousands of people have
been direct beneficiaries of the
medicine, medical supplies,
nutritional supplements, hygiene
products and foodstuffs provided
by HOPE worldwide and its
partners. Procurement has
worked closely with our key
partners such as AmeriCares,
Direct Relief International, Heart
to Heart, Blessings International,
Feed the Children and Wine to
Water. Through these generous
partners, HOPE worldwide’s Global
Procurement Department has
secured over $11 million in in-kind
contributions. These gifts have
saved lives around the world.
Notably, Procurement has secured
over $240,000,000 in medicine,
medical supplies and equipment for
hospitals in Cambodia and medical
work worldwide since 1996. In 2018,
together with our dedicated partners
AmeriCares and Direct Relief
International, we facilitated donations
of $10 million in GIK primarily
benefiting the HOPEww healthcare
facilities in Cambodia. We also joined
forces once again with the Disaster
Relief and Recovery Program, and
in response to the hurricanes on the
Eastern US shores and Indonesia,
we were able to provide foodstuffs
and health and hygiene kits for
thousands of victims.

havoc in many parts of Myrtle
Beach, South Carolina, HOPE
worldwide partnered with the owner
of a local hotel to provide housing,
food and medical care for 250
people who had lost their homes
and possessions. HOPE worldwide
provided hundreds of pounds of
hygiene kits, foodstuffs and water
filters for these families. The families
expressed how grateful they were for
the support after this devastation.
