As a non-profit childcare facility, MKCCC is licensed by the NYS Office of Children and Family Services and accredited by NAEYC, a National organization which promotes excellence in early childhood education.

EARLY HEAD START

MKCCC is very proud to have been selected as one of only six child care centers in Westchester, Dutchess and Putnam Counties to participate in a new tri-county grant designed to promote school readiness for children in low-income families. This grant will allow us to serve 8 new low-income/at-risk families in our community. Head Start programs (for children ages 3-5) and Early Head Start programs (for pregnant women, infants and toddlers) promote school readiness for children in low-income families by providing comprehensive educational, health, nutritional, and social services.

A LETTER FROM DAWN MEYERSKI, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Friends of Mount Kisco Child Care Center,

“The first five years have so much to do with how the next 80 turn out.” – William H. Gates Sr., co-chairman of Thrive by Five and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. As I reflect upon 2015, I am filled with overwhelming gratitude. Mount Kisco Child Care Center had a truly successful year and we want to thank each and every one of you who made that possible. I am happy to report that we ended the year with a surplus, which allowed us to recognize the hard work of our staff and make some necessary repairs to our facility. The Center is fully enrolled and our exceptional programs, including Feed Me Fresh nutrition and JEWEL (Joining Elders with Early Learners), are flourishing. But there is still a lot more work to be done! For 45 years, MKCCC has provided safe, affordable and exceptional early care and education to more than 6,000 children and their working families. We know first-hand the importance of those first five years. We also know that a working family’s needs don’t necessarily change once a child enters the ‘school age years’, which is why we continue to partner with the Bedford Central School District offering reliable before- and after-school care options for our local families. Additionally, our school holiday and 8-week summer camp programs for K through 5th grade provide a full-day, fun and stimulating experience for children of families throughout Northern Westchester. MKCCC is fortunate to be surrounded by so many philanthropic community partners and friends. We also have an outstanding Board of Directors, and we greatly appreciate all of their hard work and dedication under the strong leadership of William Zeltner. As we begin our 45th Anniversary celebrations in 2016, we are filled with great hope and encouragement, that with your continued support and generosity, we will be able to serve another 6,000 children and more in the years to come! With deep appreciation,

Dawn Meyerski, Executive Director

2015 JOEY AWARD

The Child Care Council of Westchester, Inc. held its 2015 Awards Breakfast on Friday, June 5th. The Awards Breakfast is The Council’s annual opportunity to thank those who work so hard to prepare children for learning and success in school and acknowledge professional care providers and community leaders who make outstanding contributions to child care and quality of life for children and working parents.

Dawn Meyerski, Executive Director of Mount Kisco Child Care Center, was one of four Joey Award honorees for 2015. Dawn’s commitment to ensuring high quality care and education for children in the community, regardless of ability to pay, is paramount. She works tirelessly as an advocate for all children (and their families), helping them maximize their full potential in every aspect of development.

AMERICAN GIRL EVENT

On Saturday, November 7th, MKCCC hosted two fundraisers featuring Valerie Tripp, author of 10 American Girl books, including her latest about Maryellen Larkin, set in 1954. Both events benefited the Center’s need-based scholarship program, which helps provide access to quality early care and education for working families.

A morning event was held at the Mt. Kisco Elementary School. Children and their parents met Ms. Tripp, who spoke about where ideas for her stories come from, the creative writing process, research for writing, and the fun of storytelling. During the afternoon, a small group of girls attended a 1950s sock hop-themed tea at The Katonah Village Library and met with Ms. Tripp to talk about writing, how to develop an idea into a finished story, and steps in the creative process. Ms. Tripp answered questions and gave young writers tips, pointers, and advice about writing fiction and nonfiction. It was a wonderful day that was enjoyed by all! Award-winning author Valerie Tripp is a graduate of Mt. Kisco Elementary School and Fox Lane High School.

FEED ME FRESH PROGRAM A Good Year For Kale, from Dr. Susan Rubin, MKCCC FMF Coordinator

Kale is a plant that can tolerate cooler temps, so we started our seeds in March. As the plants grew big-ger, the children transplanted them into bigger containers. Then they grew so big, so fast, there was little room in our greenhouse for anything but kale plants! So, we held a ‘Kale Sale’ in late May and sent many kale plants home to families and with MKCCC supporters.

Kale plants are a great investment in your health and provides your family with the freshest green leafy veggies all season long. What could be better?

Kale plants continue to grow after you harvest the bottom leaves by snipping them - for your salad. Our kale in the afterschool program gardens were a huge hit ~ as we harvested those bottom leaves each week and transformed them into tasty kale chips. Even the most hesitant eater hopped onto the kale craze. Any many children started buying kale with their parents at the store and making kale chips at home.

JEWEL (Joining Elders With Early Learners)

Our JEWEL Intergenerational Program is a very important part of MKCCC’s curriculum. Several times a day, children of all ages visit with their ‘grandmas’ and ‘grandpas’ next door at Family Services of Westchester’s My Second Home. Whether they are enjoying music with Miss Gina, arts and crafts, or dog therapy with our new puppy friend ‘Milo’, the children and older adults form meaningful relation-ships that promote mutual respect, care and understanding.

K is for Kale Chips Prep your harvested kale for kale chips. No knives are needed so this is an easy task for any age. Holding the stem, you rip the leaves off. The leaves are further torn into smaller pieces. Gently rinse and blot the leaves dry. They are then placed on parchment paper on a large cookie sheet. Rub the kale leaves down with a small amount of oil, add a sprinkle of salt and put them into a preheated 300 degree oven for 8-10 minutes. They are done when light and crispy, not soggy. Kale chips are best eaten immediately. Experiment with adding a sprinkle of garlic powder, onion powder or even some smoked paprika. Enjoy!

VOLUNTEER CERTIFICATE PARTY

Each week, we welcome more than 25 high school volunteers to MKCCC, and they are a vibrant part of our community. Student volunteers are encouraged to work with all age groups and to create projects based on their own interests and talents. They are asked to make an initial commitment of 6 consecutive weeks on a set day and time but many stay with us for much longer! In June, we held our first MKCCC Certificate Ceremony for Youth Volunteers. More than 40 students, along with their families, attended the party to acknowledge all the hard work and dedication of these youth volunteers.

The teachers, staff and children at MKCCC truly appreciate our dedicated youth volunteers!

THE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM In 2015, 80 children and their families received need-based scholarship support to attend MKCCC. In addition to scholarships for low income families, all families who receive Westchester County Parent subsidies for child care also receive scholarship funds from MKCCC, as the county subsidy does not cover the cost of care. Many families receive discounts for multiple siblings or to help ease temporary financial difficulties. MKCCC’s mission includes making quality care and early education ‘affordable’. That’s what we strive to do within the scholarship program each year. Over $645,000 in fundraising was necessary to support our families with great financial need in 2015. Unfortunately, some families remained on the waiting list for support. We thank our donors, supporters, board members, and advocates for letting others know why we raise funds each year. A few examples of those with financial needs includes one family whose grandmother is the caregiver. She and her grandchildren were finally approved for county support after 5 years of MKCCC scholarship support. Another family of recent immigrants from Africa, has worked very hard to start businesses in the area. They have been able to build their small businesses over time thanks to the generous support of our donors, who provided scholarship support for their children while they concentrated on business growth and contributing to the local economy. They were confident that their children were enrolled in a quality program with the best possible care. MKCCC celebrates its many accomplishments over more than 4 decades, including our diverse, caring and sharing community. We’re strong and thriving into our 45th year, and proud of those who encour-aged and allowed this important work to make the difference – in the early years.

MKCCC is not just a place. It's a wonderful combination of loving, energetic teachers and a whole-child curriculum. Each of the Center's programs

work together, helping children to grow into caring and constructive people who are ready for the challenges ahead.

Jennifer Brola, MKCCC Parent

Devin has enjoyed the best experience in Toddler C Ryan and I could have ever imagined. The entire Center - you and your team - are wonderful and we sincerely feel we've joined an extended family being part of it.

Parents: Meghan Finn and Ryan Pellow

We want you to know how happy we are in the infant room. Our baby reaches out for the teacher in the morning when I drop her off. In the afternoons at pick up time, I always get a full report and they have her all ready for me so I can focus on the baby and not gathering up her stuff! The teachers are so gentle and kind to all of us. I just wanted to pass along how happy we are. Ellen Sluder Cohen, MKCCC Parent

FEED ME FRESH: An Edible Evening

Mount Kisco Child Care Center held its 11th Annual Feed Me Fresh: An Edible Evening on Saturday, September 26th, hosted by Eric Hadar at Ivanna Farms. The annual fundraising event benefits the Center’s need-based scholarship program, helping provide access to quality child care for working families. More than half of the children at the Center receive scholarship support. Event honorees were MKCCC advisory board and board members, Beverley & Sabin Streeter along with friends and neighbors of the Center, Fran & Maarten Steenman of La Tulipe Desserts in Mt. Kisco. More than four hundred guests enjoyed live jazz music and delicious tasting menus from top local area restaurants. Guests and donors contributed over $300,000 to make this event the most successful one yet! The event was chaired by Kelly Sullivan, former MKCCC parent and owner of Quaker Hill Tavern in Chappaqua. Honorary co-chairs were Twink & Jim Wood and Sara Weale & John Rudge. Jeffrey Cerutti acted as master of ceremonies and Joe DiMauro, of Mt. Kisco Seafood, was the evening’s auctioneer.

MONDAYS MATTER AT QUAKER HILL TAVERN More than 200 friends, families and staff joined the festivities on Monday, April 13th for ‘Mondays Matter’ at Quaker Hill Tavern in Chappaqua to benefit Mount Kisco Child Care Center. Guest bartender Joe DiMauro entertained guests behind the bar and 10% of the restaurant’s proceeds were donated to MKCCC. The evening also featured our annual ‘Cheers For Children’ Wine Grab and raised more than $3,300 in total. Huge thanks to former MKCCC parents Kelly & Tim Sullivan, owners of Quaker Hill Tavern, for including us in their newest community cause!

COMMUNITY PARTNERS MKCCC is fortunate to partner with many philanthropic neighbors throughout the year. In January, we participated in a pre-school fair at the Katonah Village Library and held a ‘Friends and Family’ dinner night at Travelers Rest in Millwood. We displayed our MKCCC artwork in the Children’s Program Room at the Chappaqua Library and held a second ‘Friends and Family’ dinner at Myong’s during the month of March. In April, Ben & Jerry’s hosted their annual “Free Cone Day” and named us their non-profit partner for the third year running! We also welcomed Kohl’s Department Store and volunteers from Endurance who were an enormous help with our ‘spring cleaning’ and plant sale efforts! Crabtree’s Kittle House hosted us once again for an evening of delicious cocktails and small bites in July at their “Sparkle For A Cause” and donated 30% of the evening’s proceeds to our scholarship program. The year ended on a high note due to our annual Holiday Sharing Drive collaboration with the Junior League of Northern Westchester and Whalen’s Moving who helped give a happy holiday to dozens of families in need.

IN MEMORIUM—CURT BEUSMAN In 2015, Mount Kisco Child Care Center lost a dear and long-time friend. Curt Beusman was very involved in helping create our Major Donor Campaign and was always thinking about innovative ways to market MKCCC in the community. As one of his many legacies, Curt started the Jane H. Beusman Children’s Scholarship Fund to ensure scholarship support for children in years to come. We will miss his sense of humor, quick wit and overwhelming generosity. He was a great mentor to many and always had the best interest of MKCCC in his thoughts and heart.

Thank You for Your Generosity and Support We would like to thank all the foundations, businesses, corporations and individuals in our community who

support and contribute to MKCCC and its programs. Through your generosity, parents are able to stay at

work while their children learn the necessary skills for school success. The Development Office has made

every effort to ensure the accuracy of the information contained in our list of 2015 donors and regrets any

omissions or discrepancies. If an error has been made, please accept our sincerest apologies and kindly

notify us. Thank you.
