ANNUAL REPORT 2014
“MKCCC isn’t about childcare
for a single day, it’s about care
for children that can last through-
out their lifetime. Our children
are learning about the importance
of healthy food – harvesting,
cooking and eating it, and also
about being responsible and
compassionate members of a
community”.

A Letter from Dawn Meyerski, Executive Director
Dear Friends of Mount Kisco Child Care Center, I want to thank all of you for the vital support you’ve given to our children, families and the programs of MKCCC. We were able to secure enrollment with need-based scholarships for 76 children and their families in 2014. This support can make all the difference for working families who may not have other reliable options for child care. As you know, to be able to have trust in the teachers caring for your child and feel secure that your child is thriving in exceptional programs is critical as you go to work each day. We’re proud to offer families the highest quality early care and education that gives our parents great satisfaction and security.
This and many other aspects of our Center, continually remind me that as a community group we are also community advocates. We very much appreciate and enjoy working with a wonderfully diverse group of families, friends and volunteers to accomplish what we do together at MKCCC.
Our many community collaborators include the Westchester Children’s School for Early Development, Northern Westchester Boys & Girls Club, Parents as Teachers via Neighbor’s Link, Bedford Central School District, Mount Kisco Chamber of Commerce, Chappaqua Chamber of Commerce, Chappaqua Library, Child Care Council of Westchester, Early Head Start, New York State and Westchester County government agencies, many area religious and civic organizations, etc. All of these groups are important to the fabric of our community life and focus on working together to insure all children and families are represented, well educated and well respected.
For 44 years, MKCCC has been a part of this vibrant and generous community, caring for and educating over 6,000 children, helping to give them an exceptional start in school and in life. MKCCC is a part of a community of passion and caring, reflected in our curriculum of healthy choices and multi-generational programming. Business, civic and residential life here is also part of the lives of our families and friends. It does take a village (as Madam Secretary Clinton wrote) and thankfully we are a part of that village! From our extraordinary volunteers and Board of Directors, our parents as community leaders, and the many individuals and foundations who provide invaluable funding to help make our quality care affordable, we recognize you for the part you play in making families and children stronger and healthier, better students and confident parents.
To watch, time and again, the crucial assistance and care MKCCC provides passed on and shared by so many, is a testament to our mission and to our dedicated friends and families.
Thank you for embracing our community with your presence, influence and generosity. With our best regards, sincerely,
Dawn Meyerski
Notes from Ruth Goodman, MKCCC Social Worker, & Volunteer Coordinator
with Jennifer Bancroft
Stephanie Hubbell is a Junior at Horace Greeley High School in the Life School
program. Stephanie completed her internship for the Life School in our
afterschool program. Two afternoons a week Stephanie has assisted our school
age kids with homework and a variety of projects.
Lindsay Schwartz is a seventh grader in Chappaqua. We are thankful to Lindsay
for donating her time to the Center, and also for generously collecting donations
for MKCCC as part of her Mitzvah project. Thank you, Lindsay!
Sarah Harris is an eighth grader in Chappa-
qua. Sarah has been volunteering consistently
for the past two years, dedicating time and lots
of enthusiasm to our Preschoolers.
Valeria Crespo is a junior at Horace Greeley
High School. She has volunteered in our infant
program throughout the school year. She is
well loved by the teachers and babies alike.
A big thank you to all of our teen volunteers who donate their time and share their enthusiasm
and affection with our children!
It is a joy to oversee a program as mutually beneficial as the MKCCC student volunteer experience. We welcome volunteers as young as twelve years old. MKCCC is often a student’s first experience with any kind of community service. We are an ideal site for this initial foray into volunteering. Our teachers are accustomed to working with young volunteers. They are skilled at integrating them into the classroom and assuring that they know they are appreciated.
MKCCC children delight in the attention and interaction with volunteers, and the volunteers have the gratification of seeing the value of their service in the faces of the kids. I have had numerous parents of volunteers remark on the positive effect that volunteering at MKCCC has had on their teen’s self esteem. Many of our youngest volunteers con-tinue throughout high school, and even returning during college breaks!
We are also fortunate to have older teen and young adult volunteers. Many older teens opt to work with our afterschoolers. With this group, assistance with homework is essential. The kids are thrilled to have a teen helping them and supporting them. In addition, they enjoy spending time in the art room and on the playgrounds!
Feed Me Fresh Our Herb IQ booklet, published in 2014 with a grant from the Rusticus Garden Club, allowed us to showcase our Feed Me Fresh nutritional curriculum and our students as they enjoyed eating and cooking with fresh foods. This popular booklet (please ask us for a copy or stop by to pick one up!) includes class-tested recipes and tips on growing and using a variety of herbs. It was a gift we were able to give to the community, based on what we teach and share here every day.
Watermelon & Mint Slushies Recipe from MKCCC’s Herb IQ Booklet
Ingredients: 1 seedless watermelon A good sized bunch of fresh mint
Equipment: Ziplock plastic bags - gallon size Knife Butter knives for the children Blender
Procedure: Teacher will cut watermelon in half with the big knife and will cut away the rind, leaving a big pink cube of water-melon.
Using butter knives, children can cut the watermelon into medium sized cubes and place them into the ziplock bag.
The bag of watermelon pieces will go to the freezer in the kitchen for a few hours.
Children can pluck the mint leaves off of the stems and save them for later when the slushies are made.
Later in the day: Add chunks of frozen (or semi-frozen) watermelon into blender with a small handful of mint. Mix until you get the desired consistency. Pour into glasses and serve.
JEWEL (Joining Elders With Early Learners)

This extraordinary intergenerational program is carefully integrated into our curriculum planning and the classroom environment for all age groups from infants to school age children.
The JEWEL program is an integral part of our unique and nurturing programming. Young children and older adults engage in various daily activities together, including gardening, crafts, cooking, sharing meals & snacks, music, movement, storytelling and reading.

THE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM MKCCC provides the highest quality full day, year round care and education for working families for infants 3 months old to children through the 5
th grade in after school care. To be enrolled in 2014, 77 children or 58% of
MKCCC families received need-based scholarship support. The Scholarship Program allows parents to gain economic stability for their family, to become a part of the MKCCC support community, and to have confidence in the teachers and curriculum their child enjoys while they work.
More than $645,000 was raised for MKCCC programs from foundation, corporate and individual gifts. Significant support was given from the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation, The Rice Family Foundation, Curtis Instru-ments, Bari Lipp Foundation, The Thomas and Agnes Carvel Foundation, The Charles A. Frueauff Foundation, St. Faith’s House Foundation, The Sloman Foundation, Westchester Community Foundation, and others for the Scholarship Program, Feed Me Fresh Nutritional Curriculum, and the JEWEL Intergenerational Program.
MKCCC is a member of Westchester Child Care Council. Dawn Meyerski, Executive Director, is Co-President of Westchester Early Childhood Director’s Association and on the Advisory Council of the Westchester Community College Early Childhood Curriculum Committee and the Advisory Council of Parent as Partners, a Neighbor’s Link program with the Bedford Central School District.
Tuition and government subsidies do not cover the full cost of care at MKCCC. Ruth Goodman, MKCCC social worker, works closely to help advocate for our families in obtaining government social services available in Westchester County. She meets with all of our families during the year and counsels them if they face challenges. Over 20% of the children enrolled receive special services for varied developmental delays and other needs. An inclusion class, with the Children’s School for Early Development, is on-site during the academic year.
MKCCC looks to establish long-term relationships with families and this focus continues to result in extraordinary success stories. Families and their children can benefit from consistent care and may be in our programs for a decade, from infancy through elementary school, including critical and enriching full day care in the summer months. The Center helps parents understand the importance of early learning and developmental milestones for their child and promotes the well being of the whole family.
Since opening its doors in 1971, MKCCC has served over 6,000 children! There’s a great demand for quality child care and area families are waiting for scholarship support.
FEED ME FRESH: An Edible Evening
Mount Kisco Child Care Center held its 10th Annual Feed Me Fresh: An Edible Evening on Saturday, September 20th. The evening was hosted by Eric Hadar at his Ivanna Farms estate in Bedford Corners, NY and raised $203,000 (gross). Event honorees were past board presidents Clark Robson and Janet Schloat, and Joe and Joan DiMauro, owners of Mt. Kisco Seafood. The annual fundraising event benefits the Center’s need-based scholarship program, which helps provide access to quality child care for working families. More than half of the 140 children at the Center receive some form of financial assistance. Three hundred guests enjoyed live jazz music and delicious tasting menus from top local area restaurants. The event was coordinated by Kelly Sullivan, former MKCCC parent and owner of Quaker Hill Tavern in Chappaqua. Honorary co-chairs were Curt Beusman, Fran Osborne and Sharon Pollack. Jeffrey Cerutti acted as master of ceremonies while Travis Worrell, of Westport Auction, was the evening’s auctioneer.
GUIDING EYES FOR THE BLIND VISITS MOUNT KISCO CHILD CARE CENTER
Michelle Brier, Guiding Eyes Director of Marketing and Communications, visited MKCCC in April to introduce the children to the efforts and rewards of the program. Michelle and “Heeling Autism Service Dog”, Pekoe, spent time with toddlers, preschoolers and school-aged children to show how Guiding Eyes dogs enable freedom for people
to achieve life’s goals.
Pekoe is part of a relatively new Guiding Eyes program, providing service dogs for children with autism. “It is wonderful for our children to learn about this life-changing community program,” said Dawn Meyerski, Executive Director of MKCCC. “Understanding and acceptance should be taught at the youngest of ages and it is so important for all kids to learn that being different or having extra help, is simply an important part of some people’s everyday lives.”
COMMUNITY PARTNERS MKCCC has many collaborators and partners throughout the community. We appreciate and depend on the work we share with our friends and neighbors in northern Westchester County.
Community events that have benefitted MKCCC and our children have included Clean Up Day with Kohl’s Depart-ment Store; their volunteers also helped at our annual Feed Me Fresh event and they recommended the Center for vital grant support from Kohl’s Cares, too.
Ben & Jerry’s chose MKCCC as their local charity for the popular and delicious Free Cone Day! Crabtree’s Kittle House hosted a night of fine food and drink in Amy’s Garden to ‘Sparkle For A Cause’ for MKCCC; Mt. Kisco and Chappaqua Libraries displayed the delightful artwork of our children, and our Afterschoolers enjoyed weekly na-ture study visits to Westmoreland Sanctuary in the summer. Our long-time partnership with the Junior League of Northern Westchester and Whalen’s Moving and Storage again proved to make many amazing holiday stories for dozens of families in need as appropriate gifts were given in abundance for children and adults alike! We thank all our community members for their participation in the mission of the Center. Your help inspires us all.
BYRAM HILLS HIGH SCHOOL DANCE TEAM
The Byram Hills High School Dance Team choose MKCCC as the non-profit they would support this aca-demic year with their fundraising. They had bake sales at school and organized a Dance Expo that featured other high schools and area dance companies to contribute to their effort. Dance team members included Jessica Primiano, Anastacia Villis, Jennifer Spruck, Debbi Fiori and Gabrielle Santiago, along with their coach, Stephanie Rizzi. They visited MKCCC to perform for our children and present a $4,244 check for scholarship support to Dawn Meyerski, Executive Director. BRAVO Byram Hills Dance Team!
CHEERS FOR CHILDREN
More than 80 guests joined us for a wonderful evening at Travelers Rest in June as we cele-brated our first “Cheers For Children” event. Our good friends, Tina and Gary Langner, owners of Travelers Rest, hosted an evening of wine tasting, delicious food and jazz music, raising close to $5,000 for the MKCCC Scholarship Program.
Thank You for Your Generosity and Support We would like to thank all the foundations, businesses, corporations and individuals in our community who
support and contribute to MKCCC and its programs. Through your generosity, parents are able to stay at
work while their children learn the necessary skills for school success. The Development Office has made
every effort to ensure the accuracy of the information contained in our list of 2014 donors and regrets any
omissions or discrepancies. If an error has been made, please accept our sincerest apologies and kindly no-
tify us. Thank you.

Mount Kisco Child Care Center is a non-profit, providing the highest quality early care and education for working families. Established in 1971, the Center currently has 134 children enrolled ages 3 months to 11 years old, in full day care, before school, after school, and summer camp programs. Our inspired, award winning curriculum includes our Feed Me Fresh garden-to-table nutritional program and our intergenerational programming.
Our Esteemed Volunteers MKCCC wishes to very sincerely thank two of our MOST dedicated volunteers: Maggie Kolvenbach makes a wonderful difference in the state of our children’s library in the conference room by keeping the books tidy and in order and by tirelessly cleaning out the worn books from the shelves and adding the new ones. We could not have a library that the children of all ages enjoy visiting each day without Maggie’s vital help. You have likely enjoyed interacting with the incredible Twink Wood at our reception desk on Tuesdays. She covers it all with know-how and grace, from directing visitors to answering the phones and allowing our staff to attend to other administrative tasks. Twink’s assistance is very much valued. We all appreciate her help and like spending time with her each week. These two dear friends of the staff, our children and our families, are examples of what makes the Center so special and being here such a delightful experience! We thank Maggie and Twink for the magnificent jobs they accomplish on schedule at the Center and for the many joy filled hours they have given and continue to give to MKCCC and to all of us!!!
