Introduction from the Director: Alan Rivett
1
We often describe Warwick Arts Centre as situated at the heart of the University of Warwick. It’s more
than a physical location. Warwick Arts Centre is the pulse of the University’s enterprise to develop the
richness of contemporary thought and ideas and to stimulate and deepen people’s understanding of the
world in which they live.
In 2007-08 the programme was
characterised by the ambition to
bring the most exciting
international artists to the University
to present innovative and
unexpected work that directly
involves audiences. Venues were
transformed - the Butterworth Hall
was home to an explosive
performance not of music but of
contemporary theatre as the
National Theatre of Scotland
performed the English premiere of
the award-winning Black Watch;
Footsbarn evoked a magical world
view of A Midsummer Night’s
Dream in a tent on Tocil Field; and
João Penalva turned the Mead
Gallery into a theatre, a cinema, a
library and a dance studio.
Contemporary culture responds to
and demands participation by
audiences and the amazing range
of auditoria and the extent and
variety of the campus mean that we
remain one of the premier venues
for new work. Increasingly, work will
move outside the Arts Centre’s
auditoria, to address audiences in
their own environments and to
extend possibilities for engagement
with artists.
As well as the large, showcase
work, Warwick Arts Centre
continued its commitment to
supporting the work of emerging
artists through both programming
and co-commissioning work. We
co-produced the Studio Christmas
show with Oily Cart of If All The
World Were Paper, worked in
association with PILOT and
supported two of the UK’s most
exciting young theatre companies,
Filter and Gecko in their
productions of, respectively, Water
and The Arab and the Jew.
The quality of our programme is
evidenced in the additional funding
that it attracts. From grants from
the Henry Moore Foundation and
the Calouste Gulbenkian
Foundation for the Mead Gallery to
sponsorship of the Classical
Concert Series by BMW, we
continue to persuade external
organisations to support our
ambitions. In January 2008,
Arts Council England announced
that it would increase its annual
grant to Warwick Arts Centre over
the next three years to support
the international character of
our programme. Significant strands
within the programme continued to
be supported by a broad cross
section of people. Cinema has
perhaps the widest appeal and the
programme was successful,
curating Box Office hits into a
thoughtful programme of intelligent
contemporary films. The loyalty
card scheme and pricing strategy
for students, initiated the previous
year, contributed to a steady
regular attendance.
Warwick Arts Centre is more than a
programme however. Its staff are
highly respected individuals who
contribute their experience as
Board Members and/or Advisors to
other organisations including BAC
small scale touring consortium
(This Way Up); Blink Film Festival;
Coventry Jazz Festival; Cre8tus -
the organisation dedicated to
innovative approaches to
arts education in Coventry,
Warwickshire and Solihull;
Fierce Festival; the Government Art
Collection; MOVIES media
education group; Roadmender;
Shared Experience Ltd;
Talking Birds;WOMEX (World
2
Music network) and Music
Beyond Mainstream (the World and
Contemporary Music Consortium).
The staff share and extend their
knowledge in dialogue with
University students and staff. Over
250 students were trained as
stewards by our Front of House
team to provide a high standard of
customer service. The student
drama and music societies were
coached and supported by our
technical team to stage ambitious
productions. Students are trained
in education work to provide an
outstanding team to lead children’s
Saturday Art Workshops,
Sculpture and Colour Trails for
primary schools and three Youth
Theatre groups. The marketing
department and the Mead Gallery
each hosted an intern programme
which gave 6 students valuable
work experience in the arts. In
addition departments from across
the University from faculties as
diverse as Law and Sociology
gave insightful contributions to our
programme of post-show and
exhibition talks.
The final year of funding from the
Neighbourhood Renewal Fund
saw the culmination in March 08 of
the CovCoolKids project with four
performances in the Butterworth
Hall with around 700 children in
each, with all abilities welcomed
and catered for. As one teacher
noted: “The inclusive nature of the
project is the most important thing
for us. It’s wonderful for our special
needs children to come and
perform in front of everyone and
feel part of something bigger”.
Towards the end of the year we
had notice of funding from the
Coventry Children’s Fund to
extend CovCoolKids for a further
three years.
In one sense, the project that
consumed our attention in this year
is the project that only began to
take form in the following year.
Early in 2008 a professional team
was appointed to develop plans for
the Butterworth Hall. The project
aim was to improve the experience
of audience and artists alike, to
provide greater opportunities for
commercial development and a
new space for artistic
experimentation.Warwick Arts
Centre needed to raise almost £8
million to support this development
and a major fundraising campaign
was initiated.
So, in all 2007/2008 was a full
and productive year for Warwick
Arts Centre, consolidating our
success across all artforms and
activities and sowing the seeds
for ongoing growth.
Alan RivettDirector, Warwick Arts Centre

Introduction from the Chair of Board: Prof. Susan Bassnett
This has been a year during which Warwick’s commitment to international art forms has increased in
strength, as has our commitment to family entertainment and to broadening our audiences.
As a university-based Arts Centre,
we see our mission as not only to
provide the best of theatre, film,
fine art and music, but also to
expand the work we do in reaching
out to the broader community. The
University of Warwick has an
ambitious intellectual strategy that
is matched by our belief in
widening participation and
enabling the more disadvantaged
members of society to share in the
best of artistic production.
As the year partly dealt with the
planned temporary closure of the
Butterworth Hall, some innovative
thinking on other spaces was
deployed. A Big Top erected on an
open space close to the Arts
Centre was one such example,
and one of the highlights of the
year for me was Footsbarn’s
production of A Midsummer
Night’s Dream with an international
troupe of actors in that space.
Alan Rivett and his team have
done a magnificent job this year
and have maintained the high
quality of work that we have all
come to associate with Warwick.
Next year, when the Butterworth
Hall reopens, they will be
working in enhanced surroundings
and we can all look forward to
another exciting, innovative
programme that will reinforce
our position as one of Britain’s
leading arts centres.

Education at Warwick Arts Centre
CovCoolKids
Our biggest ever arts education
project came to a thrilling end this
year with four performances in
the Butterworth Hall with around
700 children in each performance.
For the first time ever we retracted
the bleacher seating in the Hall
giving us a massive and perfect
arena for such large scale
performance. Their high levels of
skill and confidence matched the
size of the space and the
importance of the events.
Boys Dance
Our latest Boys Dance project,
Open Windows, built creatively on
our on-going and highly productive
relationship with 6 schools from
Solihull, Coventry and Warwickshire
and BeingFrank Physical Theatre.
For the first time the boys took as
their inspiration a Mead Gallery
exhibition from the Portugese artist
João Penalva and his work (rich in
narrative, memory and theatre)
leading to complex and inspiring
performances in the Theatre.
Androcles and the Lion
A brand new project
working in music and
drama with one
secondary school and
three primary schools from
Warwick. Using an extant
musical score the children
created their own drama
from the Androcles and
the Lion story coming
together to perform
in the theatre at
Warwick Arts Centre.
This was one of our busiest and most productive years ever – in which we made over 85,500 contacts with
22,700 children, young people and adults across more than 800 activities from in-depth arts education
projects to theatre and dance workshops and from post-show talks to Sculpture & Colour Trails.
“There’s a sense of creativityand experimentation, and of nurturing the arts.”Audience comment
“Events at the Mead Gallery arealways good and a great way forchildren to begin to view art.”Audience comment
