HOW LONG HAVE CHRISTIANS BEEN RECEIVING THIS SACRAMENT?

• Since the time of Jesus. We have writing of a man named Origen who lived in the 200’s, who talks about confession and anointing of the sick…

• Origen wrote that a Christian "does not shrink from declaring his sin to a priest of the Lord and from seeking medicine . . .

WHAT DO WE RECEIVE IN THIS SACRAMENT?

HEALING• Both our bodies and

souls need healing. This Sacrament can heal sins, AND sometimes give miraculous physical healing, too!

STRENGTH• To give us strength

to endure suffering courageously. It helps us carry our cross with Jesus.

Page 8: Anointing of the Sick

THIS SACRAMENT GIVES US THE STRENGTH TO CARRY OUR CROSS WITH PEACE AND JOY AND NOT TO BE

AFRAID WHEN WE’RE SUFFERING OR DYING,

BECAUSE GOD IS WITH US.

WHO CAN RECEIVE THIS SACRAMENT?

From the Catechism 1505

• The Anointing of the Sick "is not a sacrament for those only who are at the point of death…as soon as anyone of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived."

It’s not just for the dying!

• Anyone who is sick, old, has a chronic disease, or is going to have a big surgery should ask to receive this Sacrament!
