Hello readers,

Amy here! This is my very first online magazine and I’m a bit nervous to share!! Growing up I was always inspired by magazines. I would literally buy at least 5 issues a week. Man, my parents were SO angry because once I read all of them, and I’d keep them... ALL, JUST IN CASE I needed them again. I had magazines every-where! I not only was inspired by the imag-ery but what people my age were wearing, how they did their hair, how the magazine was designed, etc.

This online magazine is basically my photography diary. I will share tips, photos, inspiration, dreams, goals, and SO much more. I have no idea if this will be weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, or quarterly but I am planning on sharing with fellow photogs, clients, people who like photos, amateur pho-togs, anyone and everyone really! I’m really open to ideas, questions, tips, etc. to include in this magazine so PLEASE don’t be afraid to email me. Let’s work together!

Enjoy my first issue.

2012 Senior RecapThese are just a few of my AMAZING 2012 seniors. Without them, I wouldn’t be here right now. I owe every ounce of gratitude I have to them and I am forever thankful. My first year of business was such a blast. I met some wonderful people that I now call friends!! I just KNOW that they all will succeed in whatever they do and I couldn’t be any more proud. Thank you ALL for trusting in me and giving my the greatest opportunity to photograph a special moment in your lives. I hope you had a great senior year and I wish you nothing but the BEST. Keep on shining!!

You are beautiful.

studiokh: kimberly halversonI had the privilege of meeting Kimberly Halverson in 2010 when I found her work after her student show at UMD. I spent hours and hours everyday viewing her many albums on facebook and my jaw remained open the whole time. I couldn’t believe how beautiful EV-ERY image was. I’ve always been inspired by other photographers but Kimberly was different. Her artistic eye captured color, emo-tion, light so beautifully. If I hadn’t found Kimberly’s work I wouldn’t be here today (I say that often be-cause every element of my pho-tography career is truly important to me). I may have never bought a camera, taken a photography class, practiced my butt off, and photo-graphed over 50 sessions within 1-1.5 years. Without further ado, I introduce to you, Miss Kimberly Halverson. My biggest inspiration. Isn’t she just BEAUTIFUL?!

How’'d you get into photography? There were quite a few meandering paths that hap-pened to intersect, bringing me to where I’m currently sitting, however I think the main avenue was (drumroll) Myspace. I know, right? I had always had a passion for art growing up, but as a 16 year old with a competitive nature, I was determined to have the best default in all the interwebbed land. Laughs. From there my interest in portraiture (thankfully) evolved, although I do still love a good game of dress-up.

Who/what is your biggest inspiration?People. Stories. Histories. The bow-tied gentleman in Barcelona that buys me a drink at the bar. [See below.] The widowed farm wife back home in her kitchen, feed-ing her cats.

What is your dream shoot/concept?I'm a sucker for vintage couture gowns. I adore all things French. (I think the palace of Versailles should do it for backdrop?) I've been known to get overly excited over "WIND IN THE HAIR! We've got WIND in the HAIR!" moments. Stir those in the pot with some silky, elegant window light; add a dash of drama (a room full of birds perhaps?); and voila! Heaven.

Other than photography, what other tal-ents/hobbies do you have?Travel! It's rare to find me in Minneapolis now that I have discovered my newfound passion. In addition to circling the globe, I love reading, writing, leaning new languages and crossing items off my lengthy bucket list one elephant ride at at time.

I know you've been traveling a TON. What is the most exciting thing about traveling? The feeling of accomplishment you get when you con-quer something new, foreign, and out of your comfort zone. Victories as big as navigating your way out of bustling, downtown Bangkok with no food, sleep, money, and a dismal sense of direction to as little as ordering your coffee in French at a Parisian cafe. (Je voudrais un cafe au lait, s'il vous plait!) I do all my traveling solo which has pushed me to become more independent than I ever thought possible.

Your wedding photography is spectacular. What's your favorite part of a wedding day?Gracias! Do I have to pick just one part? Details. See-ing one couple's vision come to life after months of hard work and planning. The first look. It's always a moment so ripe with emotion that it's hard to take a bad photo-graph. The cake. I have not one sweet tooth, but a whole mouth full of them.

Tips for amateur photographers? In regards to the art: always be willing to take risks and try something new. Even if you've already developed your style, your photography should evolve as you do. Also something I need to practice more myself.

Related to the business aspect: your clients are not buying your photographs, they are buying you. Until they see the finished product, the experience you share together is what they're basing their opinion of the work on. I think it's when you can deliver both a great experi-ence for your client, follow it up with stellar images cre-ated for them, that I think the real potential for a great business is born.

how ANP preps for a session

Every photographer preps for a shoot differently. Some may just wing it and others may research hours on end. Since I started my photography career, I found my own way to prep for any sort of session. It’s a specific formula that I follow and it has been more than effective for me.

Like any photographer, I start with email inquiries. I am HUGE on email because I can’t keep track on facebook when, where, who, I’m going to meet. My email is sorted into inquiries: Senior, Wedding, Family, Engagments, etc. I have to thank Zach-ary for this because before I was a MESS. Now, if I’m looking for a specific email, I go to my inbox folders and search through it rather than scrolling endlessly for one email. My client and I will email back and forth until we are ready to meet. We ex-change numbers and set up a location and time to meet.

At our meeting, my client and I will discuss all the important details for their session. We talk about locations, outfits, ideas, inspiration, products, pro-cess, and literally everything I need to know prior to the session date.

After the meeting, I research, research, research. Facebook, Google, Pinterest, blogs, Twitter, Insta-gram, flickr, you name it... I’m on it; researching everything I have learned about my client to give them the maximum experience and exceed their expectations for our session. I create moodboards a TON because this gives my client a visual of what I’m envisioning and they give me feedback.

My moodboards are usually all over the place but I try and be cohesive about it! Usually they are photos that I’ve been really inspired by. I’m pretty sure most of us are visual learners so I’ve noticed that my clients really enjoy looking at these be-cause it gets the wheels turning and together we brainstorm awesome ideas. (See right page for moodboards.)

When researching is done, I create a mental shot list that I plan to make use of at the session. This consists of poses, locations, props, etc. I don’t have to use all the ideas on my shot list but I found that it’s good to have in case I’m in a rut. For ex-ample in a couples/engagement session, I’d have keywords like, “arms around, look down”... For me, this means that the couples either faces each other or the guy is behind the girl with his arms around her and both looking down. I’ve just cre-ated 2 poses with just those simple words. BOOM! It’s been amazingly helpful to me!! I always go into a session with at least 2 new poses that I’ve never tried so that I have new and fresh ideas. My clients help out a lot with poses also... they are just amazing!!

For the client, I always make sure they know what they want to wear. Clothes can describe a person’s personality very well, so it helps to know how they want to express themselves so we can figure out location details that will fit well together. Another important thing I have to know is WHO they are as a person because I strive to bring out their quirky, fun, bold, elegant, and confident personalities.

Page 13: ANP|NEWS- June 2012

I don’t mean to teach anyone anything but if you took something away from this, I am grateful!! I believe that all photographers create their niche on how they work and what works best for their business. To end with, don’t compare yourself to other photographers because you’re only wasting time not creating a brand for yourself.

How many of you have said this, “WHY DOESN’T MY PHOTOS LOOK LIKE THAT?!!?!”... (raises hand). When I found my style of editing I believe I did a happy dance... twice a day... for a month. I achieved this by practicing, practicing, practicing. When I look back to my very first batch of work, I wanted to throw up! Everything was completely WRONG even though I thought it was bomb.com.

If it wasn’t for practicing I certainly wouldn’t be here running my own business!!

Practice, research, be inspired, ask questions, and HAVE FUN.

I met Katelyn at a small beach one afternoon for our very first shoot together. It was a bit crowded so she took me to a private site where she use to live and my eyes grew big... even bigger when Katelyn pulled out some of her clothes. I began to snap and Katelyn literally nailed every shot. Is this real life? Did I just fall in love? Yes, it was real life and YES, I AM IN LOVE. Katelyn and I have grown so much by just working together. I am forever grateful that I took that initiative to contact her to shoot. If I hadn’t, I wouldn’t be where I am now with Katelyn as one of my favorite models. Her kindness and generosity for helping a sister out is going to be appreciated for the rest of my life. Since you guys have seen SO much of her I thought it’d be a nice opportunity to introduce her and a chance for you to get to know her.(See photo on pg. 14 from 1st shoot)

Page 16: ANP|NEWS- June 2012

You basically know that you are my favorite model in the universe but who is YOUR favorite pho-tog/model?I would have to say my favorite model would be Adriana Lima. She has a very exotic look to her that makes her unique. My favorite photographer would have to be YOU. Not just because you take a good majority of my pictures, but we always have a blast when we shoot together!

What is your favorite food?My favorite food, well I can’t exactly narrow that down but when I do splurge, it is definitely pasta!

If you could choose to meet ANYONE, dead or alive, who would it be?If I could meet anyone it would have to be Gwen Stefani, just because No Doubt has been my fa-vorite band ever since I can remember and I feel like she is a pretty down to earth person and she has an amazing voice.

14

Page 17: ANP|NEWS- June 2012

What does a day in Katelyn’s life look like?Wake up, let my dog out, WORK let my dog out again, play with her, WORK some more, then home to hang out with my lovely boyfriend.

I’m a big believer of having dreams and goals. What’s your biggest dream? My biggest dream is to be behind and in front of the camera professionally, also to run my own restaurant.

Summer is here! Any exciting plans for the summer? My summer plans consist of working a TON and hopefully taking a few weekends off here and there for camping. Nothing too exciting.

Tips for someone who might want to model?Have fun!

Page 19: ANP|NEWS- June 2012

ome of my classmates might ask, “Who does she look like?!” Well, I’m here to answer that this is Marie, Kate’s (not so) little sister. I have to thank Kate first for showing my work to Marie and her family. There’s nothing I love more than networking! So, thank you Kate for this great opportunity. Marie is my first se-nior of the summer and I couldn’t be anymore grateful. What a beaut, right?!

I drove up to meet Marie and her mom, Kristin on a late Saturday afternoon. We had heard that there was going to be some storm but we hoped for the best. I scoped out their property and we brainstormed some ideas. We started at the line of trees in the front yard that you can see in the left image. I’m in love with that image!

Not only was there was a storm warning but it was crazy windy! However, that didn’t stop us. Marie and I made the best out of it which leads to one of my fa-vorite images to date (below). Marie looked so blissful and GORGEOUS.

We continued to shoot around the property and I was just blown away with every image that showed up on my (NEW!) camera. It was a really exciting session for me and it just reminded me that THIS is why I am in this industry. I get to show how beautiful my clients are and to me, that is very rewarding.

An hour had past and the clouds were rolling in. Ma-rie had just put on her second outfit when we felt GIANT rain drops so we had to call it quits for the night. But I knew that we had a wonderful session and got some great images. I already couldn’t wait to share.

Speaking of networking, Kate is a graphic design major also and will be designing Marie’s grad in-vites. I’m excited to see what she’ll come up with. Marie, I’m looking forward to working with you again! And hopefully the rain and wind won’t show up this time!!

Marie did something a little different than what I am used to. She is a 2012 senior which means she is graduating in a couple weeks! I had never heard of seniors getting their photos taken towards the end of the year but it totally makes sense because we change so much within a year!

HAPPY GRADUATION!!

ASHLEY A.

Ashley and I met a few weeks ago for a shoot! I loved all of her outfits! Ashley is definitely a bombshell in front of the cam-era. We shot around downtown, Quarry Hill, and Fosters. After-wards, we got some ice cream! Perfect ending to a shoot? I THINK SO. Look out for a blog post of Ashley soon! You don’t wanna miss it. PS: Sushi soon, Ashley? ;)
