Accident (collision)

ANTI COLLISION DEVICE ACD

Train Collision-A challenge accepted

2nd August,1999- Head-On-head collision in Gaisal , West Bengal- 268 died, 359 injured .

2nd December,2000- Sarai Banjaara rail disaster in Punjab 46 died and 150 injured.

3rd January, 2003- Ghatnandur rail crash in Maharastra 18 died and 41 injured .

To get rid of these kind of accidents a team of Konkan Railways produced a prototype of Anti Collision Device(ACD) based on Microprocessor and Global Positioning System (GPS) technology.

What is an ACD?

An ACD is a self acting Microprocessor based data communicationdevice designed and developed by Konkan Railways.

Features Of ACD:It prevents; a. Head-On-Head collision, b. Rear End collision, c. Side collision. d. Accident at level crossing gates (both unmanned and manned).

Types of ACD

Inside the ACD

The heart of the ACD is an Intel 80386 processor thatuses the DM&P M6 Intel chipset. It (ACD) has an integrateddigital radio modem and works on the VxWorks

Unit for Locomotive( L 435 x W 203 x H 342 mm )

An ACD consist of;

GPS(Global Positioning System),CCU(Command And Control unit),Radio Trans-receiver,ABU(Automatic Breaking Unit).

ACD- An Overview

Working Of an ACD

Advantages of ACD Acts automatically to prevent collision. Does not depends on the human action. Easily adaptable and expandable. The Loco ACD operates directly from the engine battery . The LC gate ACD can be powered by solar power system , ifrequired . Very economical and cost effective . It does not require any inputs to be fed by the crew at the startof journey , thus human error is eliminated

Disadvantages of ACD

Other train is a NON ACD train .

Adequate braking distance at the speed is not availablewhen a dangerous collision like situation arisessuddenly .

Failure to brake power of the Locomotive/train .

If two trains are running on a same but a curved track .

Cost of ACD

Installation of ACD would cost about Rs.10-12 lacs per routekm and the project cost is estimated at about Rs.7,000 croresfor Indian Railways. This will cover about 64,000 route km, allthe 6,000-odd stations, 8,000 to 10,000 Interlock levelcrossing gates and the 10,000-odd locomotives (engines)

Implementation

Pilot project of "Provision of ACD Network" has beensuccessfully commissioned recently on the Northeast FrontierRailway (of Indian Railways), covering 1,736 kilometers(1,079 miles) of its Broad Gauge route.

Final commissioning trials of ACD network installed on 760kilometers (470 miles) of Konkan Railway

Future

A new ACD Version-II [now called Train Collision AvoidanceSystem (TCAS)] is under development by The ResearchDesigns and Standards Organization (RDSO) where as ACDsystems does not depend on Railway's signaling system.

It can also be used in private vehicles as well as publictransports to prevent road accidents .
