“Without music, life would be a mistake.”Antigua Winds was founded in 1991 by Fred Hoey in San Antonio, Texas. As a musician and educator, Mr. Hoey thought, simply, that music enriches lives, and music is a natural gift to human beings. It was Mr. Hoey’s belief that everyone should have the opportunity to learn and play music.

With 20 years of full-line manufacturing experience, Antigua has evolved the design of wind instruments, always challenging and improving time tested standards with a highly skilled engineering team. Our research and development department utilizes today’s most sophisticated technology to ensure quality material composition and precision measurements. Antigua insists on selecting the most suitable materials for each instrument ranging from Pisoni pads to temper-blued needle springs. Documented work procedures and employee training help to build a core staff of highly skilled artisans, capable of producing some of the highest quality instruments on the market today. The investment in our 27 acre state-of-the-art manufacturing facility demonstrates Antigua’s commitment to remain at the forefront of instrument design and production.

Our passion for innovation has led us to collaborate with some of today’s most progressive instrument designers including Peter Ponzol and Morrie Backun. Listening to their feedback and working through innovations in key shapes, neck angles, mechanisms, ergonomics, intonation, and instrument response, Antigua has helped to redefine and shape what today’s musician requires.

From a local shop in San Antonio, Texas twenty years ago, Antigua has grown, now with distributors in over 60 countries. Antigua musical instruments are being played across the world, from the earliest beginning musicians to the most demanding professionals. In celebration of our 20th anniversary, Antigua is proud to announce the launch of the Antigua-Backun wooden clarinet. The creation of this instrument has been a joint project between Antigua Winds and renowned woodwind designer, Morrie Backun.

This clarinet starts with premium grade grenadilla wood, properly aged in controlled settings. It is within the Backun facility in Vancouver, Canada that the wood is turned, bored and machined to exacting tolerances using the most advanced machinery and

skilled personnel. These bodies, bells and barrels then undergo careful hand-finishing work and inspection by Backun technicians.The finished wooden bodies then travel to Antigua’s state of the art facility where precision manufacturing technology is used to produce the keys. Skilled artisans hand fit posts, rings, rods, springs, and keys to ensure that each instrument performs optimally. Black Valentino pads provide perfect seal, creating a clarinet that stands up to today’s demands and will meet tomorrow’s expectations.

The Antigua Winds Team worked with musicians around the world to create the new Antigua Pro G42 saxophones. Extensive research developed an annealing process which improves the tone and response of the G42. The stylized key guards and engraving is an impressive work of visual and performing art.
